All I got was being in a group of trees with some spider monster that spits toxic venom. Someone/something got cut into four pieces. Something about a top (the toy that spins) and a siren. Something about a railway from the center of the mountain to a station. Something gold and black. Maybe some type of bird... and then something more fearsome than the beast at the center of the mountain.
Not even close, I'm sure.

Guys we need to put this in the guides or something because we can't forget too much of our Matt lore.

Matt only hardcore immersed for like 3-4 years, and then started coasting/maintaining afterwards in terms of comprehension (worked on accent and such intermittently). At one point he took like a year and a half break from immersion, but kept up with anki reviews. Then he took a 6 month break where he didn't even do anki reviews which is around the time he uploaded that 3 hour video talking about how learning Japanese is a waste of time and the Japanese aren't as interesting as you wish they were.

And he liked anime and some Japanese film at the time, but looking back he says he only fondly remembers the "great" anime that everyone likes like Cowboy Bebop.

He's used Hunter x Hunter thumbnails a couple times so you already know he has excellent taste.

>> No.20432796

I can’t help but to shake my head smile every time I hear somebody say they want to move to japan, here’s why:
1) Japense people are awful. Visitors in Japan frequently cite feelings of exclusion for why they left, and that type of behaviour is reinforced at the cultural level. There’s a saying in Japan “the nail that sticks up gets hammered down” which means Japanese think it’s ok to exclude people for being different, and if you’re a gaijin (what Japanese call foreigners) you’ll always be considered different. To make matters even worse, it’s even codified at the institutional level. from banning dyed hair and piercings at schools to banning tattoos and foreigners from businesses, the message is clear: if you value your individualism and personal autonomy, Japan doesn’t want you.
2. Japan isn’t as advanced as you think it is. I know what you’re thinking, Japan is all fighting robots and high speed trains but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Most Japanese businesses still use fax machines and don’t accept debit payments, and on the hr side their hiring practices are extremely dated as well, having no laws to ensure racial equity in hiring practices, ugh.
3. Learning Japanese is really hard, like really really hard. Right out of the gate you are expected to learn 3 different writing systems, and over 2000 kanji (An alphabet that the Chinese brought over hundreds of years ago) but the problems don’t end there. Japanese is filled with untranslatable cultural words that even lifelong learners of the language still scratch their head about. for example the word “yoroshiku” has a nuance of “pleas be kind to me” or “pleas take care of me” but no true English translation exists.
So if you have been watching anime and thought about making a trip to the land of the rising sun, take a second to reconsider because the message from westerners in Japan is clear- Japan doesn’t live up to the hype.

Again, this is a language issue, though again, I am going to presume that it accounts for a decent amount of passive aggression. I can't possibly be the only person who is creeped out by this stuff: There is a whole verb in Japanese which, when appended to the stem form of any other verb, allows you to express the opposite of that verb without having to use its negative form.

Maybe that description didn't make much sense. It's like, append the positive form of this verb to the end of the stem of the verb in the sentence "It's possible to do that", and you can make the sentence mean "It's not possible to do that." Though since verbs end the sentences in Japan, it's more like "Yes, we can do that for you — NOTTTTTT." I mean, how is that "polite"? How is that the way to deal with people in business? Do people feel really great whenever they use that in a professional conversation? Do they feel like they just scored a four-hit combo in Street Fighter IV?

Epwing dictionaries are no joke, rikai* hands down. hovering over a word you get 50% nuance from translation, 30% from the dictionary’s example sentences that use the same particles that are used in the text, and the remaining comprehension comes from repeated exposure to the language. Do any of the Japanese learning boomers find it cringe to speak Japanese to other gaikokujin? Is it an age thing?
Or, is it something like, people who learn japanese as a form of escapism know that English native speakers can judge their personality much easier, so exposing their Japanese-speaker persona subjects it to the same type of judgement they are trying to escape from in the first place, and so what they they are cringing about is the prospect of being judged for something they’re doing for a deeply personal and cringy reason?

This is really the key thing that a lot of people don't seem to get. It doesn't matter if you're only understanding just barely enough to get what's going on, the drive to know what happens next means you're going to keep exposing yourself to new shit. For me when I was starting out, I really loved reading Yotsuba, so it did it for me, but if you find Yotsuba to be a grind go read something else. All the matters is you're having fun reading whatever it is that you're reading, and that you're encountering new Japanese.

i understand some people cant cope with mentally inserting pauses without commas to guide them because they cant understand spoken english

Dear Sir, allow me to clarify for you what I had originally intended to convey. My hypothesis is that the uploaded text may be compared to a database of copyrighted works which have been removed in prior, so as to avoid legal issues. I jokingly suggested that the user himself may rewrite the text he desires to upload by using synonyms to avoid such a system successfully matching significant portions of the text in question. I made sure to mention that I've never "fucked with" (colloquial for "used") LingQ to make clear that this is simply a hypothesis. In reality, perhaps the heart of the issue is that codebase is a flaming pile of trash as is common in the modern world. Perhaps the user in question is highly incompetent, which is also a real possibility.

same reason german gets harder to read when you force compound words to get broken up by spaces with prescribed rules instead of according to the writer's intuition

they wouldn't be useful anywhere else because of writing system changes making word boundaries clear to anyone who actually knows the language

there are a few places where spaces would be helpful like slightly ambiguous strings of kana near the ends of sentences but those are the places where you definitely don't want to selectively put spaces without putting spaces anywhere else because it would imply a break in sentence structure or prosody when in reality it's just a solid block of "fuck you here's how to interpret the past 20 words"

True but what's important is that it has downs that a lot of westerners in particular won't like, like the whole individuality thing. It's not "objectively" worse, but I feel the vast majority of westerners wouldn't like it, and even the vast majority of language learners wouldn't. They're in a for a rude awakening.
