That's one of the best parts about Umineko's OST though. There's so much variety that pretty much anyone can find at least a few tracks to enjoy. Atmospheric tracks, hype tracks, peaceful ones, melancholic ones, suspenseful ones, and more.

>> No.20165449

>>20165274
Sure, but for some reason all these tracks click with me except this one, this is the only one I genuinely don't like in the whole novel. But like you say, with that much variety, there's gotta be some hit or miss depending on people's taste, especially in Chiru where there's a fuckton of new tracks, including many that are really unusual and sometimes straight up weird. That's one of the reasons I love Chiru even more than 1-4.

Happy Halloween, fellow goat companions. Infodump anon here.

So, this is a full RAW extract of the Umineko text, no commands included, exactly how it shows in the VN. Up to EP 4, it is already THAT big.

I remember last time someone counted the old translation and got a value of 133.333.000-ish words, but I think they were including Hane & Tsubasa.

My count thus far is 889.131 words up to EP6.
For curiosity sake, I tried converting the values comparing it to how many pages these words could be condensed into if comparing for example the 50th Anniversary All-in-One Lord of the Rings book.

The values may not be perfectly accurate, but this is more or less how it would go:

And no, the fact that a 6 years old girl may have been mean to her (a 50 years old woman) isn't an excuse. Reread episode 4, Ange's childhood memories are undeniably true and fucked up.

What's really fun is that Umineko is sometimes so well written.

Particularly the 2/3 first hours of EP 1. The introduction is just stupidly tight. Each character is introduced in turn, with little quirks, easy to understand relations to each others, all through the eyes of Battler.

I still reread the first 2 hours of Legend of the Golden Witch occasionally. Do it yourself anons, critically. Watch how Ryukishi introduces the character. He's a fucking genius, that's what he is.

Since Ryukishi has room to alternate between sombre, comfy, melancholic, intimate scenes and action-packed, adventurous, competitive, game-y scenes there's really great rhythm to the progression, the universe feels almost meta-real to me, because it allows itself to be playful and pay homage to the staple tropes of the visual novel-scape, have its characters engage in ways that make sense in a comedic setting, and then make the transition to drama felt by changing the rules of the world to correspond to the new genre the story has shifted into. It feels like Higurashi's R07 is very playful, joyous and ultimately hopeful.

By comparison, Umineko's Ryukishi is far more serious, brooding, melancholy, for him hope is something you can only vaguely make out somewhere far in the distance, and for the most part it's illusory. It's a meta-mystery and meta-fantasy story with a focus on the psychology of its characters and commentary on the logic and significance of its setting, and it tries very hard to stick to that tonally, especially in the question arcs. The result is that you immediately start looking at the setting in terms of potential suspects and ways to unravel mysteries, and you don't get invested in the characters in the same way you do with Higu. I still think it was the right call to write Umi this way (given the way he wanted to resolve it, he really couldn't have yasu playing joyously with battler, george, jessica and maria, it completely derails the 'inevitable despair' train and turns the 'everyone dies and there's nothing you can do about it'-resolution into forced drama of the worst kind), but I still think that Higu was a more engaging story to read (not to have read) for the most part.

Any of you doing nanowrimo?

It's always weird to see the disconnect between readers and writers

Writers will just describe novels manuscripts etc in terms of "Word Count", since pages vary from book to book. Font size, paragraph spacing, etc... all that shit means that the only universal measurement is word count.

But it's understandable that a reader wouldn't really be that concerned with word count and ask how long something is in terms of "pages."

I think it is necessary to make the distinction between thematics and atmosphere, and purely technical skills. The first two hours of LotGW are technically impressive. They are so technically impressive that they pass mostly invisible, until you reread them and remark how truly impressive they are.

The very first scene introduces Kinzo's quirks by virtue of Nanjo being used as a foil. It also introduces Beatrice as some crazy dream/witch/woman that Kinzo, which could be senile, is bawling for.

The second scene introduces, in order: George (being used as a foil for Battler), Battler, George's family, each with their own little quirks, use them again as foil for Battler's own family, and use that to introduce Maria, then Rosa. It is technically impressive. Very few introductions manage that many characters in that little time, and manage to give them all a good spotlight and a decent "feeling".

The scene with the boat introduces Kumasawa and foreshadows heavily that something weird is going on, while the scene just after that complete the introduction with Gohda, Kanon, Jessica, and the rest.

The first two hours of Umineko are tight, so much that it is quite surprising after Higurashi. Higurashi was never a masterpiece from a purely technical standpoint.

Nah. The game is a parody of this scene from the Simpson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4lnZr022M8 . Word for word. Agnes is there. She's not dead or anything.

One of the most infamous (and most hated) Simpson episode ever aired basically explains that Agnes is not Seymour's mother, because the Seymour we see took Seymour's identity after Vietnam and the death of the real Seymour. Thus, Agnes is not Seymour's mother.

That's some Umineko fuckery. I love it.

The wording is vague but it does say "update", so I would presume it's not a standalone release and is instead a modification of the existing releases.

If it is standalone then my bet is it'll combine Q&A on Steam into one programme with 9 added on and jack up the price to $50-$60 as a soft-relaunch of the series. Danganronpa and other titles have shown regular ironic weebs will pay AAA price for VNs now and it's a good way to help drum up interest in Umineko again. Way less risky than releasing 9 seperately and trying to convince people to buy the two earlier games plus it, seeing a single combined title on steam will make it a more attractive and less intimidating package.

I don't think there's any chance Ep. 9 will be held hostage as dlc. This is all for a free update, to do a singular release under the new title, by all accounts so far. If you own both on steam you will get it.

Only people I can see being fucked over are those who don't own the series on steam and now have to buy the new release at probably fifty bucks to get it - but at the same time I'm pretty sure the games aren't actually available in Japan on steam so there's going to HAVE to be some kind of standalone release.

In literature it's so hard to choose a favorite because so many contain exceptional erudition and elegance, and in the case of Faust or the Divine Comedy, understanding of the deepest abyss. The rarest minds who could foray with the third eye's elucidation into the yawning and lumbering abyss, below the windy gorge, with the uncomfortable sensitivity we have seeing strobe lights have timeless things to say about our shared world and us as agents in it, from Dante's explicit beatification as the end of theurgy (Umineko is blatantly about this) to Faustian alchemy, man from clay (big part of Frankenstein, the modern Prometheus, too) as almost all scripture tells. It's actually too hard. My favorite story is Umineko, my favorite religious/philosophical work is probably the Upanishads. I really like Tao Te Ching and I Ching a lot, too, though. Wittgenstein's Remarks on Frazer's Golden Bough are also Umineko before Umineko. For literature it'll be Ficciones or the Divine Comedy. I love Borges too much so we'll say I'm a bit biased okay?

I don't give a single shit about dubs, but official PS3 sprites and extra content is always nice. But considering it is pretty much hold hostage by the dub, this thing looks like we will need something like that, $100-200k at the very least?

I think realistically we're looking at a six figure minimum amount. Given it's not literal who VOs as well I can't imagine that number will start with a 1, either, but maybe I'm overestimating things and they're not planning to voice as many lines as the japanese version did.

I figure that if they're smart their plan is to cash in on Umineko's relative lack of merch by packing each tier with something desirable but cheap to produce to squeeze the whales for all they're worth. Plushies, pins, art prints, maybe an "ironic" dakimakura, etc. should be offerings. The goal will be to get people to use the Kickstarter as a way to buy that sort of shit rather than the game itself, since most people interested in it already have it. Load up the mid tier with a physical collectors copy and they should be golden.

As for stretch goals, who the fuck knows? Maybe if Episode 9 is actually the teased new content one of them will be to have it release earlier in the West by working on it before release instead of after (as a hypothetical). Generally I cannot really see what you can do as added bonuses on what amounts to a re-release with a dub. Maybe they'll do dubwork on more spinoffs like the podcast they're putting up? Which would be nice if only to get official translations.

Don't get me wrong, I think both sides fucked up here. They had a mutual agreement that the whole scene became a logic error. Battler's 1st concern was he didn't want to become the main suspect (of Erika). After the killings he still didn't dare to leave the guest room and GM-Battler still didn't want to respond Erika (chainlock intact?). Same goes for the letter on the stairs. Also, the human side made (logic) error: It seems Dlanor divided the guest room into the bedroom (includes the closet) and bathroom. Later, Erika requested this division in RED: 3 parts, bedroom, bathroom and closet. There's a lot more. But nobody cares

I think there's a connection between not getting into the part of Umineko that's dedicated to Rosa-Maria character exploration, dealing mostly with fantasy vs delusion and love vs abuse, and not finding Ange interesting.

Her character arc is intended to mirror the player, but from a more personally invested perspective. The question of how you should interpret the events of the story, what you should take away from it, might seem like a pure waste of time, given that at the end of the day it's "just a story", but by looking at the world of Umineko through the eyes of a person who doesn't have the luxury of indifference you see the philosophical dilemma it presents more clearly.
That's where Maria's diary, the tulpa projections, reality re-framing, magical problem solving and all that comes in. There you see clear as day both the benefits and the detrimental consequences of magic as well as of truth, and in understanding this you come to be invested in Ange as a character, because that is precisely the dilemma she has to overcome or die - but only if you at least acknowledge the fundamental dichotomy by the time she becomes the protagonist.

The only good project was Witches and Woodlands. Other than that, I enjoy blind LPs because it's the closest thing to experiencing the story for the first time. But all these stupid PS3 mods make half of them unwatchable because they are so cringy.

This Umineko Gold shit is the epitome of not understanding what makes a VN immersive and how exactly the visuals are supposed to enhance the experience. It's everything wrong with the console ports and more.

You're one of those original-only purists who refuses to admit ANYTHING Alchemist added was good, aren't you? Someone post crazy Maria from EP1. Jesus. She was supposed to be a bit off-putting because she was smiling even though her mother got killed. She's not supposed to be a crazy killer loli and the scene is not meant to be scary. What's up with that ridiculous CG?

If having some perfectly fine scenes slightly enhanced means having others completely ruined, I'd rather stick with the original version. It's good all the way through.

I really like that one, but I can always look at it in my Umineko pictures folder. I don't need it in the actual game, especially not in detriment of many other scenes that get fucked by awful CGs.

It's the equivalent of a Phoenix Wright trilogy remake making "Bridge to the turnabout" even better than before but having Phoenix wear a pink tutu for the entire duration of the first game. Not worth it.

That's just a matter of perspective. You could just as easily say that the Alchemist version greatly enhances most scenes while only slightly hampering a few.

I'm not even saying the original was lacking. I'm just saying that it could have been made even better, which in my opinion Alchemist successfully did. If you prefer the original that's perfectly fine, just don't act like every single attempt at retelling the story since then has been an utter garbage fire.

The full PS3 port has it's fair share of problems to be sure, like the poor translation and censorship. but it also adds a bunch of neat features, like the option to display music tracks, mute specific characters, change the display, and an overall better interface. You can even turn of the lipsync if you hate it so much, though I don't see the issue with it.

In my mind the ideal Umineko would be the PS3 port with the new translation.

Different guy but, I loved the whole escapism vs reality viewed as magic vs not-magic bits because I'm a huge loser that has done the same stuff my whole life.
It's just that the events off of Rokkenjima were not what I was reading the story for. The whole time I wanted to get back to the stuff I was into, and she was getting in the way of that with The Ange Show: Starring Ange, which I found pretty boring, minus all the Stakes screentime and the bits about Maria and Rosa.
As far as Ange herself, she's a mixed bag for me. I want to like her but she does strange things like dive headfirst into magic to get away from her shitty life, but then ruin Maria's happy Rosa moments and blow up the Golden Land by not leaving the catbox alone. Maria was doing essentially the same thing as Ange was, but she denied it. The everyone within the Golden Land was doing pretty well and that's gone(ish) too. Of course none of that matters if you just say it isn't real for the purpose of the story, but as a reader, the metaworld and Golden Land is just as real as Ange is, if not moreso for the screentime it has. In that way she actually struck me as a sort of antagonist for bringing about the destruction of the pleasant truth GM Battler created, but she flipflops on magic so much it's hard to truly pin her down as one. It seems to me like she's ready to end the happiness of others either out of spite (Maria) or to further her goals (opening the book.)
But that's mostly based on my personal philosophy about the powers of the mind, imagination, and the worlds that stories create. They're just as real as anything else, they're just intangible. Annihilating the happiness in them is unforgivable to me.

Everybody?
Jessica and George, yes. They would feel hurt and betrayed at first, bu i think both would understand her and offer help.
Battler, no doubt.
Kyrie and Rudof have no reason not to help her, nor does Rosa.
Krauss, as much as a prick he can be, i'm pretty sure he would genuinely feel sorry for her and do his best to help her.
Natsuhi, well, she's responsivle for Yasus state, but while i think it would be incredibly complicated between them, i could see her trying to come to terms with Yasu and trying to atone, it's not like she's proud of what she did.
Also a bit complicated would be Eva and (to a much lesser degree) Hideyoshi.
Biggest problems i see with Genji, Nanjo and Kumasawa, those three basically started the whole shit, and unlike Natsuhi they knew quite well what they were doing. (including handing a baby over to a depressed and unstable Natsuhi, really, how could they expect THAT to work?)
