I remember last time someone counted the old translation and got a value of 133.333.000-ish words, but I think they were including Hane & Tsubasa.

My count thus far is 889.131 words up to EP6.
For curiosity sake, I tried converting the values comparing it to how many pages these words could be condensed into if comparing for example the 50th Anniversary All-in-One Lord of the Rings book.

What's really fun is that Umineko is sometimes so well written.

Particularly the 2/3 first hours of EP 1. The introduction is just stupidly tight. Each character is introduced in turn, with little quirks, easy to understand relations to each others, all through the eyes of Battler.

I still reread the first 2 hours of Legend of the Golden Witch occasionally. Do it yourself anons, critically. Watch how Ryukishi introduces the character. He's a fucking genius, that's what he is.

I thought Higu is far superior to Umi as a commercial story, because of the way it counterbalances mystery, suspense, horror and tragedy with pure fun. Since Ryukishi has room to alternate between sombre, comfy, melancholic, intimate scenes and action-packed, adventurous, competitive, game-y scenes there's really great rhythm to the progression, the universe feels almost meta-real to me, because it allows itself to be playful and pay homage to the staple tropes of the visual novel-scape, have its characters engage in ways that make sense in a comedic setting, and then make the transition to drama felt by changing the rules of the world to correspond to the new genre the story has shifted into. It feels like Higurashi's R07 is very playful, joyous and ultimately hopeful.

By comparison, Umineko's Ryukishi is far more serious, brooding, melancholy, for him hope is something you can only vaguely make out somewhere far in the distance, and for the most part it's illusory. It's a meta-mystery and meta-fantasy story with a focus on the psychology of its characters and commentary on the logic and significance of its setting, and it tries very hard to stick to that tonally, especially in the question arcs. The result is that you immediately start looking at the setting in terms of potential suspects and ways to unravel mysteries, and you don't get invested in the characters in the same way you do with Higu. I still think it was the right call to write Umi this way (given the way he wanted to resolve it, he really couldn't have yasu playing joyously with battler, george, jessica and maria, it completely derails the 'inevitable despair' train and turns the 'everyone dies and there's nothing you can do about it'-resolution into forced drama of the worst kind), but I still think that Higu was a more engaging story to read (not to have read) for the most part.

Writers will just describe novels manuscripts etc in terms of "Word Count", since pages vary from book to book. Font size, paragraph spacing, etc... all that shit means that the only universal measurement is word count.

But it's understandable that a reader wouldn't really be that concerned with word count and ask how long something is in terms of "pages."

I think it is necessary to make the distinction between thematics and atmosphere, and purely technical skills. The first two hours of LotGW are technically impressive. They are so technically impressive that they pass mostly invisible, until you reread them and remark how truly impressive they are.

The very first scene introduces Kinzo's quirks by virtue of Nanjo being used as a foil. It also introduces Beatrice as some crazy dream/witch/woman that Kinzo, which could be senile, is bawling for.

The second scene introduces, in order: George (being used as a foil for Battler), Battler, George's family, each with their own little quirks, use them again as foil for Battler's own family, and use that to introduce Maria, then Rosa. It is technically impressive. Very few introductions manage that many characters in that little time, and manage to give them all a good spotlight and a decent "feeling".

The scene with the boat introduces Kumasawa and foreshadows heavily that something weird is going on, while the scene just after that complete the introduction with Gohda, Kanon, Jessica, and the rest.

The first two hours of Umineko are tight, so much that it is quite surprising after Higurashi. Higurashi was never a masterpiece from a purely technical standpoint.

If it is standalone then my bet is it'll combine Q&A on Steam into one programme with 9 added on and jack up the price to $50-$60 as a soft-relaunch of the series. Danganronpa and other titles have shown regular ironic weebs will pay AAA price for VNs now and it's a good way to help drum up interest in Umineko again. Way less risky than releasing 9 seperately and trying to convince people to buy the two earlier games plus it, seeing a single combined title on steam will make it a more attractive and less intimidating package.

I already got them both day 1 since I wanted to support Ryuukishi07 and the official English release.
Read them even twice, once with the original art and a second time with the PS3 mod.
I was a bit mad that I would need to pay full price just to see Episode 9.

I think realistically we're looking at a six figure minimum amount. Given it's not literal who VOs as well I can't imagine that number will start with a 1, either, but maybe I'm overestimating things and they're not planning to voice as many lines as the japanese version did.

I figure that if they're smart their plan is to cash in on Umineko's relative lack of merch by packing each tier with something desirable but cheap to produce to squeeze the whales for all they're worth. Plushies, pins, art prints, maybe an "ironic" dakimakura, etc. should be offerings. The goal will be to get people to use the Kickstarter as a way to buy that sort of shit rather than the game itself, since most people interested in it already have it. Load up the mid tier with a physical collectors copy and they should be golden.

As for stretch goals, who the fuck knows? Maybe if Episode 9 is actually the teased new content one of them will be to have it release earlier in the West by working on it before release instead of after (as a hypothetical). Generally I cannot really see what you can do as added bonuses on what amounts to a re-release with a dub. Maybe they'll do dubwork on more spinoffs like the podcast they're putting up? Which would be nice if only to get official translations.

I was dreading how Maria would sound, but I find what little I heard of her to be tolerable so far.
