I was pretty angry at how they couldn't fit any of his useless spells into the film before killing him in what 10 seconds flat? ... but since the entire movie was so damn enjoyable I let it slide.

Actually naturally more powerful than Touko and Araya and in possession of an A+ ranked spell, a pillar of fire that's around 1000 degrees. All in the novel, but not in the movie. Despite these advantages, Touko set a trap in the building that kept Alba unconscious in the building until she entered it a second time, so he had no time to actually prepare. Also of not is how he's arrogant and lacks common sense.

In other words, he's like Nero Chaos and Gilgamesh. More powerful on paper, but got killed easily by the underdog, even though if they got serious early on they would've wiped the floor with their opponent.

Yeah, but Alba is packing a 200 damage spell while Gil has a 4000 damage Noble Phantasm. 18th Roa? If I remember correctly, Touko only has about 20 magic circuits, which is pretty average, whilst Cornelius had a lot more. So she had to beat him in a battle of wits rather than in magic.

Also, I think Cornelius thought that Touko had lost her "familiar", meaning the cat monster, to her sister and didn't expect her to use it in a fight. Kind of harsh on him really.

But yeah, you're right, if Nrvnqsr had just ended it he'd have won, but he had no idea what Shiki was capable of, while Alba was aware that Touko kicked a substantial amount of ass. He's arrogant, but he also had no time to prepare because of Touko's trap, so that played a part too.
