Reading Higurashi for the first time, in manga form. Is that a bad idea?

I'm up to the the last chapter of Onikakushi-hen now. I think I am supposed to believe that the needle in the ohagi was related to the death of Tomitake, since clawing at his throat to get the needle out is the only explanation I can think of as to why he would do that. But she said something about being sorry for going too far for a prank, so I'm thinking given her behavioral problems, and considering Satoko used many tacks in a trap for Keiichi intended for his hand, one needle in his mouth was not a big deal in her mind. Keiichi is just having a manic paranoid episode. The white van wasn't after him at all, it's just a heavy vehicle on an unpaved road and it slipped a bit, and may not even have been as close to hitting him as he believed it to be. I'm about to watch a bunch of cute girls, and Mion, die horribly.
