Guys, I was checking out the JLPT N5 deck and after 300 cards I snapped out of it and realised how fucking retarded what I'm doing is.
Tell me what can I possibly do from now on:
>know kana 10/10
>went thru RTK1+3, but I know how to write from memory about 2000 kanji
>went thru Tae Kim's grammar guide
>started mining graded readers, but realised maybe it's better to mine harder stuff that I'm more interested in

so should I just immerse and mine words from this point on? I did try the Core deck in the past but I'm not super convinced about it, it actually reminded me going thru that fucking JLPT deck

take it from someone who hasn't even finished tae kim that the first thing you should do now that you're somewhat familiar with grammar is just dive into native material you think you would actually enjoy, like a VN or LN.

Honestly there's no reason not to do both at the same time. I don't know about anyone else here but doing vocab in anki with no context/reference to native material I remotely care about made my retention really bad (60% or lower).

But if I encounter that word in text it makes it stick way better. If you really want to just do anki then try it and see if your retention is good after a week, then adjust accordingly.

I doubt it can be directly transfered to Japanese. Subtitles won't help that much if you can't read the kanji, so you probably need a baseline at first. There's also the fact that Spanish and English are still relatively close, so seeing a word can sometimes be enough to understand the meaning (eg explain - explicar). Still, it's probably pretty helpful when learning a language and as listening practice. I wish English movies and series had subtitles sometimes, cause the sound directing is total garbage.

I read an interview with James Heisig where he mentioned learning to speak Japanese by playing with children, somewhere up in the mountains. How could you even make this stuff up? So when I heard the man was in Tokyo, I knew I had to ask him about it.

Because here’s the extent of what I learned from children by teaching grade school in Japan for several years: The word for lunch. How to say “I’m so cold.” How to say “I’m so hot.” How to grab your teacher’s penis and exclaim “bigu sticku.” How to insert your fingers up his butt in a move known as the kancho. Beyond that, children typically ramble about some toy or cartoon or playground game. They’re not going to coach you on how to make hotel reservations or order up another plate of gyoza. The idea that one could learn to speak from them is insane. They can’t even use the language decently themselves. That’s because they’re freaking kids.

I met Heisig at a writer’s workshop. He seemed a pleasant enough fellow, and a fine teller of grandiose stories. After listening to his well-polished tale about singlehandedly inventing a way of learning Japanese characters that millions of Japanese folks had never thought of in their thousands of years of history, I finally got a chance to ask him, “How did you learn to speak it?”

“I played baseball with the kids,” was his reply. “Up in the mountains. In Nagano.

“You played baseball?” I asked. “With children?

“Yep.

“And that’s how you learned to speak Japanese?

“Sure. Children are the best teachers.”

Now, that sounds reasonable. Everybody nodded. But it isn’t reasonable. It sounds good, but it’s actually nuts. Children are the worst teachers. They make no damn sense.

You know, over the years, I’ve asked many people how they learned Japanese, and their answers consistently fall into one of two categories. They either describe a systematic method pursued diligently over the course of several years, or they make up some convenient bullshit because they don’t really want to respond to the question. I looked at Heisig, and had my answer.

Even if you're lucky enough and the voices aren't drowned by some background noise like rain or the likes, it can still be hard if they're mumbling. Death Note live action for example had that breakfast scene where, if I had mumbled like that, I would've been scolded by my parents. Actual acting should be clearer than the usual if you ask, but nah not on English screens. Funnily enough, most game dubs don't have that problem, they're as clear as it can get.

It might be difficult to use if you are not familiar with radicals. The akebi app has similar features but the way Jisho is laid out is just more intuitive (scrolling vertically). Akebi also has a "draw" kanji feature but if you don't use proper stroke order I'm not sure what kind of results you'll have. I like akebi because I save lists of vocab words, export them as a text file, and add them to my mining deck.

The recommended studying routine is literally just read more. Listen more. Get input in japanese.

I have abundant free time but I don't even spend the most of it consuming japanese media. I probably average at like an hour a day of serious input in japanese, if that (this number is more or less pulled out of my ass), and yet I still know a real damn good amount after only three years. If you actually loved japanese media and reading and listening to japanese enough that you spent more time than me on it every day, you would easily learn it. There's no excuse other than simply not being in the right mindset. You view it as a school test you can study for and get full marks if you work hard enough, but the reality is it's a living language and all you have to do is make the decision to spend time trying to understand it, and keep spending time on it because you enjoy it. Then you will acquire it naturally.

went through the guide in the OP and I have 2 questions regarding it:
1) is it recommended to go through yotsuba vol. 1 and 2 or just the first one?
2) for the DoJG deck (one with grammar definitions) which card type would be better for someone who's already went through Tae Kim - cloze or recognition?
3) how do I "use" the deck? let's say I use cloze deletion type of card, I see the gap and properly fill it, is that it? I can go on or should I read the additional examples or anything on the back side?

It goes over the general tools that will lead to learning the language if handled by someone with a lick of rationality. How I see it is that guide and the main guides aren't technical guides like one of the grammar guides or either or the two Anki guides, so imo treating them like a divingboard into native content is a solid approach a learner can take. In fact I think instruction bit for beginners is the least important part of either guides nor the site they are hosted on. The way some go on about it is borderline ideology if I'm going to be honest with you.
As if the guide is some sort of magic ritual to control how learners learn, as if they have no agency of their own. Sometimes I think people heavily arguing over the One True Way to learn X or Y place an inornate amount of ego value into something as trival as a basic guide for beginners. Your average learner doesn't care about some ideological struggle raging in the background and only wants the most relevant information to get them to the next point.
Also taking into consideration that both the main and alternative guides link to the learner resource sectiom of the main guide which also links to the other core resource hubs on the site, I would have no issue with recommending either alternativeguide.html or guide.html. They both qualify as covering the bases. They could be condensed to a few dot points or expanded upon every little point and at the end of the day no more or less valuable to the learner who only really cares about knowing about the basic tools that will help them read/watch/listen to/whatever it was that made them want to learn Japanese.

Reading is a complex "cognitive process" of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning (reading comprehension). Reading is a means of language acquisition, communication, and of sharing information and ideas. Like all languages, it is a complex interaction between the text and the reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge, experiences, attitude, and language community which is culturally and socially situated. Manga is a medium used to express ideas by images, often combined with text or other visual information. Comics frequently takes the form of juxtaposed sequences of panels of images. Often textual devices such as speech balloons, captions, and onomatopoeia indicate dialogue, narration, sound effects, or other information. While it is often said that "manga isn't reading", it is at least deserving of notoriety for those who would truly believe the aforementioned to recognize that manga, or comics, are typically more engaging across entire populations rather than appealing to specific audiences with the dynamic nature of its content. So, while even if it is said that manga isn't reading, meaning is derived from said manga in the exact same basic way as it would be from any book.

books like tyler kim show each form by itself but they rarely if ever show any examples of them being stacked and broken down, just reading a few of them would help (real time) interpretation of complicated speech, i mean they're not common enough that they become natural on any short timescale when you could write one fucking chapter on it which would really help people break them up on their own when they're first starting up instead of after months and years of massive immersion

Chinese grammar is literal caveman tier in complexity and has same structure as english. The kanji are more consistent in pronunciation then nipp. the pronounciation is harder to be understand, but if your autistic like mattokun then pronunciation will be similar in difficulty. so overall it is easier in almost every way other than pronunciation if you ignore nip pitch accent.

This pic probably sums it up pretty well.
Chinese: Tons of different pitches and accents make the entry level hard. But if you got that down, the rest is easy since pronunciation of a syllable carries over from word to word. (One prof I met just sat down and grinded those for a few weeks and never had problems afterwards)
Japanese: Depending on your native language, not much of a problem early on, but will eventually come back at you if you want to sound like a native speaker, so you better learn pitch accent from early on if you want to sound like a native speaker.

Is there a random factor somewhere in how anki calculates intervals? I've searched around but couldn't find anything to suggest so. I ask because, for example, if there's a card that says "good" will give an interval of 14 days, and I answer "good", the actual interval it gives me can be anywhere from 12-16 days or something like that. I've confirmed this by answering a card, checking it in the card browser, undoing the answer, giving the same answer again, and checking the browser again, repeatedly, and the interval it gives changes, seemingly randomly picking from a small range of numbers around what it says it's giving in the review session. You just learn the language, and it comes together. Many, many words use Kunyomi, Gikun, etc... etc... but with general awareness you usually know how to read words. If you are reading a book or manga without furigana for every word, and the word has no furigana, you should know how to read it. If it doesn't have furigana learn the word by heart. If it does, don't worry about it unless you want to be really high level.

I think you are right. In learning Japanese especially over time you should not rely on English or whatever language to translate, you should see Japanese and understand Japanese only as Japanese. IMO people obsess over rules and tactics and stuff but to learn Japanese all you can do is study, read, listen and speak. As much studying as possible should be from Japanese sources that have nothing to do with English, and Japanese that do not speak English. If you just work hard you get results. See for yourself if you are getting results and adjust accordingly. It is like fitness people who study it scientifically but never make muscle, whike people who never think just eat and train then get big. Even people I see who go to Japanese schools can't speak Japanese.

in addition to what you said, i think it's bullshit because in your native language you're simultaneously learning what the object or concept even is with the word, once you know that it exists you have less to learn in a new language
a better argument would be that when you are learning your first language you have nothing to fall back on to understand the concept, so there is a higher level of necessity of learning the word

そうか - I see (understanding)
そうね - That's true (agreement)
そうだ(ね) - That's true (agreement)
そうなんだ - Oh Really? (surprise)
そうなんだね - That's true (agreement)
そうです(ね) - That's true (agreement)
そうなんです(ね) - That's true (agreement)
そう - I see. I agree. Oh really!? (It can mean any depending on how its pronounced)

On the other hand the following are all questions:

そうか?
そうなんか
そうですか
そうなんですか

Core 2k/6k are from a frequency list of Asahi Shimbun newspapers published from 1991 to 2001. Fuck yeah a lot of those words are not common. However, when Core came out it was the best of any available options (especially since iKnow fucked up and released them as creative commons).

However, Core is no longer the best option available. If the JLPT Tango series can be fully made into Anki decks, they should be superior to Core 2k/6k in every way. At the moment, only N5, N4 and N3 have been made. They will be finished though.

anything meant for the jlpt is bad because it has to subscribe to what the jlpt tests early on and you should only use frequency lists or shared decks for a few hundred or a little over a thousand words at the most anyway, so anything that's actually very common but the jlpt decides not to test until N2 or N1 is going to be missing, and anything stupid that they teach for N4 for bad reasons is going to be in the deck instead

I do say that. Whether you study Tae Kim, Core, Genki, Minna no Nihongo, JFZ, whatever. You need to be immersing and not have what you study be your only exposure to Japanese.

Nuke's just making an Anki deck based on existing material. This material looks legit. Nuke's just anal about how the decks look and includes a lot of index fields. That makes it easier to customize.
