Yes it is still harmful. Where do you get your words from? if it is from what you are reading then you actually are not reading but subconsciously looking for words.

>>19761044
>>19761048
You slowly start noticing things over time and once you notice something you can look it up and then you still won't know it. But after that when you see it more times your brain combines what you looked up with context and after seeing it like 100 more times you reflectively understand it. You can not force understanding as there is required time for you to learn certain concepts and no amount of brute force can fix that. As for vocab/kanji, you will be seeing and hearing 1000s of words a day in perfect frequency and you will eventually memorize them with time.

Hope that helped.

anki doesn't help you learn faster.
anki helps you not forget what you learn.
you don't learn things in anki.
you learn by listening and reading.
those two activities act as natural srs for frequent words, but anki is good for words you don't come across as often which you want to remember.

Ah the anki sucks because when I tried it I just tried to remember a bunch of English definitions phase. I remember that phase. Don't worry, you'll soon learn that anki is actually useful tool if you use it right. You'll learn that you can still look for context with your flash cards and that it actually does improve your Japanese ability greatly. You'll learn it doesn't take 20 years brute forcing it with reading to become fluent.

In all seriousness, I actually do think that going the route of learning kana -> learning kanji is fine as long as you don't get autistic and stress so much time over it. Don't kill yourself for forgetting shit, just get onto reading and learn. The point of RTK isn't to really "learn" kanji, just to familiarize yourself with them enough so you aren't intimidated. So many people are in the "kanji is fucking hard and scary" mindset and never try to read because they stop at every kanji to cry. If you get over the fear of kanji by just spending a month on zooming through them at an hour's practice a day, it makes it much easier to manage just learning.

However, I don't recommend RTK. That shit is ass. He picks the most ridiculous key words. Most people are just like "lol learn new English words while learning kanji!" which defeats the purpose. Like fuck that shit, don't use words with archaic meanings or words that aren't common in everyday language, and also cut the shitty kanji that aren't even common enough to even learn outside of context.

The answer is to use kanjidamage, but ignore a lot of the shit on the page. Just take a look at the kanji, maybe glance at the vocabulary examples he has associated with the kanji, but don't spend too much time or attention on them or anything else because you should be naturally learning vocabulary in context. It's more for just getting the seeds of vocabulary planted, and maybe reinforcing some words you already learned beforehand. Also you don't have to do the whole thing, just do enough that you feel like you have a firm grasp on kanji and don't really feel scared encountering them. When you feel comfortable looking at an unknown kanji and going "oh, okay, this part is that radical and this part is that one" and you can look it up with jisho.org just from its parts, you're fine. Just fucking read from there and continue learning kanji that way. There are some merits to the method, is just so many of these methods are made by probably literal (I mean that in the literal sense) autists like fucking katzumoto and matt who absolutely need to get COMPLETE structure or they will throw chairs across the room.

tl;dr - fuck RTK, do Kanjidamage, but ignore everything about kanjidamage aside from the radicals and kanji keywords. Don't bother getting serious with it, just use it to feel comfortable with kanji. Hello DJT, I just did the JCAT and here's the result.

I did N5 last year and I'm thinking of doing N4 this Winter... Can I make it?

Also not so much Japanese advice, more test taking questions:

- How do you remember everything for the listening? I feel like such a brainlet, most of the questions I messed up for listening was because I couldn't remember what the question was, what they said, or which answer was which...

- How do I extract the key information faster for the longer reading tasks? Go through the answers first then read the passage? I always find myself having to reread the text multiple times

-Any advice for the horrible arrange the sentence shit they do in the JLPT that didn't appear here?

-Grammar question advice in general, like do I read the options first? I make up the blanks as I read along and look for the answers but if the answer I filled in my head isn't there it really messes up my timing. What do?

Kanjidamage keywords are flat out better though. It's a lot easier to remember radicals like "the tip," "horny," and "opium" than it is to remember dry ass words like "squared jewel," "daybreak," and "rin" (what the fuck?). If the point is to make yourself less intimidated, it's just better to be silly with it so that you take kanji less seriously. Plus Heisig has a knack for picking words that aren't really uncommon are utilized in uncommon ways with his book, like "plane" not referring to an aircraft nor a geometrical plane. If you have to pick between one or the other, kanjidamage serves the purpose of "just fucking get over your fear of kanji, faggot" way better.

It's just about being able to get comfortable with the kanji so you don't just look at them and filter them as incomprehensible blobs. The actual keywords don't even have to fully correlate to the word, it's just giving you a grounded sense of distinction. The argument is that you only use it to get over the mental block, which you build up from. Not that you actually try learning Japanese from recognizing kanji.

Plus Khatzumoto is an autistic nigger, don't listen to his advice. He has this weird cult following of people who think they know Japanese but don't because all they do is follow shitty advice that only works if you have literal autism and your brain doesn't function like a regular human's.

We would go over a passage in the textbook, which was anything from a dialogue script to an article on religion in Japan, and then spend the rest of the time answering questions from the book. The passages themselves were perfectly good native Japanese, but they would take a ridiculously long time because the teacher would explain the grammar after every sentence, usually using a lot of English. The questions included standard textbook exercises like "restate the following sentences using the ~だもの grammar structure" or "translate the following from english to japanese/japanese to english," but there were also normal comprehension questions about the passage which we would try to answer in Japanese.

The teacher would usually have us split into groups to do the questions and then go over the answers after. It was a pretty dull routine of reading dry nihongo to other gaijin and then having them read their stilted responses back.

The best part of the quarter was when the teacher cancelled class and screened a sumo wrestling comedy instead. (with english subs of course, because third-year students don't actually know japanese).

Whatever patterns you strengthen will become your habits. In fact, that's the basic principle you're counting on with those flashcards, isn't it? That's really the whole point, right? You're repeating something, with the explicit intent that it gets burned into your brain.
But what if the very thing you were working to make stronger just happened to be a habit that was actually slowing you down? What if you were working to make a hurdle stronger?
>Seeing the word in one language, answering with the translation
It's making you slow. It makes you think slowly, hear slowly, speak slowly. You see 食べれる, connect it to 食べる, then have to translate that to eat.
The other bad side-effect of learning from flashcards is that they encourage you to believe in one-to-one translation. They make you narrow-minded and unaware of the language you think you're learning. When you learn a foreign word and an English word together, and burn them together in your mind as a pair, you create the illusion of a world where every language is exactly the same, just with different words. But that world doesn't actually exist.
Also, 食べる, 食べた, etc., are all held in the same lexeme but they are stored as separate word-forms, and each word-form is stored separated from each other. You can't just learn 食べる, some grammar rules, and automatically have all of the forms in your head. You need to learn them all separately.

Nobody should ever use flash cards for anything, and extensive grammar study is bad too.

use flash cards to practice the readings of words only, that's what you want to recall when you're actually reading after all, and checking has a lower time cost in flash cards than many forms of media
thinking you need to test yourself on translating the meanings of isolated words is a mistake, but that does not mean that flash cards are inherently useless

encoding genuine learning advice in perennial memes is how the elders of DJT keep the truth from being washed away by the beginners who are constantly coming in and out

"manga isn't reading" comes from the idea that manga is generally simpler than novels and involves a lot of extra looking at pictures, the encoded truth is that you should read true books if you want to be a kanji no tatsujin

"10000 hours of subbed anime" is likewise a hyperbole of the idea that subbed anime helps you pick up japanese phonology and grammar and thought patterns fast, for which the existence of a bunch of gaijin who got their headstart from looking at english subbed cartoons (while still paying attention to the original nihongo audio track) is good evidence

>>19765117
Indeed, but it does not influence it by a huge amount. Say you up the bump limit by 150 posts, it would only increase a thread's lifespam by the time it takes to get 150 replies on average, which is a pretty low amount all things considered for DJT. Funnily enough, after a certain point in popularity the faster a thread moves the faster it'll get pruned.

So I'm taking my third semester of college Japanese... again. I needed to take four total semesters of one language and I chose Japanese because I thought it was cool. First two semester were alright. I got B's in them but that was because I studied a lot before I even took them. Then summer came and I just sort didn't care anymore. Finally fall semester began and I realized I forgot just about everything, including all the vocabularly, kanji, and conjugations for all verbs we learned. So I got a D that semester which meant I couldn't take the next and final course, and since Japanese is a specialized language there wasn't an option to take it again in the spring or summer semester so I basically went an entire year and a half without studying Japanese while I tried and finished all of my other classes to graduate.

Now it's fall semester next year again and I'm in the third course... again. And I'm completely out of my league and anticipating failure and I don't know if it's even possible to catch up. This is literally the only class standing in my way of graduating now since I've completed everything else, and language has always been my absolute worst subject.

I have to say, this has killed my entire enjoyement of anything japanese related - literally everything. I hate it all now. I wish I never took this stupid fucking class. Worse yet, my Dad, who never had to take a language class in order to graduate college, is pissed at me because I'm failing at this already. I don't know what to do. Tutors are so fucking expensive it's ridiculous. Fuck the Japanese language.

Anyways I dropped RTK after ~400 characters or so, I focused on common kanji radicals for a little bit instead. Also, learning a single keyword and sticking with it can actually be detrimental because more often than not Kanji have multiple unrelated meanings, and it's often much easier to make sense of vocab if you learn the "intended" meaning of each component on the go (when it makes sense to do so obviously)

Gonna get laughed at but I had the same problem and switched to making physical flash cards. I streamlined it so it takes me about 10 minutes tops to make 20 cards and my retention went from 75% to 90%. Remembering from the computer screen is just harder than having the physical piece of paper in my hand. It also lowered the time I needed to remember words by 50% because I could now use the rote methods I picked up in uni to memorize stuff. Like splitting up 20 cards into 5x4, learning the first group, learning the second and then reviewing both together, then the third, then grouped etc etc. Was doing 50 words per day like this at some point and my retention stayed at 90%.

I've been watching jinrou videos on youtube and this stuff is pretty hard to follow.
I am now convinced that making sense of multiple natives trying to spin logical arguments in obtuse game terminology over a phone mic has to be one of the hardest uses of the language.
They should use this stuff as listening material on the JLPT.

It's not.
As long as you don't spend more than, say, two weeks on it, you might as well do it. Whether it'll help in the long run is questionable, but it won't hurt.

I think it's a huge plus to be familiar with them, but there's no point in "learning" them (associating a name with each radical). Most "official" names are pretty dumb and don't make any sense for your average learner; for example take 夂 (冬頭) which is only called like this because it's the component at the top of 冬.
Anyways make sure you're at least familiar with every radical listed at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_kanji_radicals_by_frequency#Most_common_radicals this will make remembering kanji writings much easier.
