This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.

I love English podcasts because they make me feel less lonely in this foreign country, but listening to Japanese podcasts seem like a waste of time when I don't know enough. On the other hand, having a transcript on hand feels like cheating. This is of course Japanese transcripts, not subs.

>just remember 以 thats it
When I started learning, I quicky learned kana and read through Tae Kim in a week for basics of how the langauge works and jumped straight into a visual novel. And I can tell you all kanji for a beginner look the same. Like even seeing the difference between 大-犬-太 is super hard and actual similar looking ones like 網-綱 or 線-綿 etc is virtually impossible. So you have to draw them cause you don't know what they mean every time. Which is also funny, cause if I see new kanji nowadays and can't guess the reading, I quicky memorize what components it has and draw it in google translate in 5 seconds, but when you are new you are gonna alt-tab back and forth between game window and google translate for every stroke and it takes like 2 minutes to even draw kanji and by that time the whole "context" of what the kek are you ever reading is out the window. And if you only had to draw all of them once it would be nice but the reality is that the next day you'll forget the once you've already looked up anyways. So here's a true story and one example. I did just try to power through and persist with reading for a bit over a month. During that month I saw word 確認, which is super common word so no wonder, like 8 times and each time I just saw it it new context, my brain would go "fuck, I should know this, I already looked it up...can't remember....draw it again -> get mad that couldn't remember -> draw it like 10 times by hand -> 2 days later, can't remember it again, repeat cycle!" And to the point where I was about to quit learning the langauge. So if you are not interested in stuff with furigana, and I'm not (I'd rather shoot myself then read manga or NHK easy), recognition is a crazy issue for a beginner. It's hard to sympathize when you are already literate, cause it seems like you can tell everything just from context, like how do you tell the difference between 湛える and 堪える? literate person will say, it doesn't matter, you'll read the 傷の痛さを湛える even with wrong kanji cause you won't even look at it, you'll just read through but that's not true for anyone who's not literate yet so you need to put yourself in their position.

by that do you mean 4 separate times as in maybe hour or days apart i.e. spaced repetition because when there's one discussion where a new word is used multiple times in the single conversation and then i don't see it used again for days i don't remember it anymore
am i dumb or is that normal

it's the first 逆転裁判 game. i was expecting it to be really difficult to understand considering it's a courtroom drama, but the first case is straightforward and nobody with a crazy accent or anything showed up, just some slurring and slang here and there. i'd highly recommend trying it some time. bonus points if you already played the english version because you get to see how the name puns were translated.

the courtroom terminology is there, but since they repeat it so often you pick it up pretty fast. plus the context helps a lot, too. there's also lengthy segments where you're just gathering evidence and investigate stuff where you don't have to worry about terms like those popping up.

If you're looking just for games that don't have an English version (although some might be patched), try these:

Digimon Adventure
-> Very beginner-friendly. Has both furigana in all dialogue and voice acting in most dialogue. Menus don't have much furigana but aside from the 'junk' items you pick up most of it's in kana. Has some great cutscenes custom-made for this game which you'll appreciate if you saw the original cartoon. Combat is pretty simplistic though and fighting Numemons gets dull after awhile.

Rockman DASH 1 & 2
-> Both games are great but iirc only 2 has furigana. Both have voice acting though, and the nihongo is pretty simple.

Time Travelers
-> Haven't played it myself but it seems great. Lots of voice acting and beautiful cutscenes.

Criminal Girls
-> A bit harder language-wise. It's a dungeon crawler type game where you rehabilitate cute girls by punishing and rewarding them.

Nayuta no Kiseki
-> Action RPG. Great graphics.

Tales of Phantasia X
-> Remake of a SNES game. Plot dialogue is fully voiced. The only really difficult words are in Cless' moves which can be long strings of kanji referring to various animals or seasons or whatever. Also includes Narakiri Dungeon X.

Aside from that, you might also want to check out Persona 2, Persona 3, Valkyria Chronicles and/or Steins Gate. Also, if you've got a hacked PSP (which really only involves you getting a memory card and putting the right software on it) you've got access to the entire PS1 library, which is full of JRPGs, and there are good GBA, NES and SNES emulators too.

"Brute force" is a nasty word, I learn through constant exposure. The thing is, the words you need to know the most are the words you'll naturally see more of since they'll pop up in stuff more often, and the words that aren't as important you won't see as often. I think I started with Yotsubato like most people. To be honest I bought a LingQ account so after that I can't really give a lot of advice, I read a lot of Easy NHK and Night on the Galactic Railroad though which you can probably find in other places.

What school will let me reach N2 in one year with a part time job?

My budget right now is 1,000,000 Japanese Yen, so I can only afford the tuition fee for a year. I also need to work part-time, to be able to support myself in terms of accommodation and living expenses, since I haven't saved up for those.

I have self-studied Japanese up till now - doing Genki I and II on my own and plan on moving to Tobira afterwards. I am also using WaniKani to cover kanji, so by next year, I should have reached N3 or a little higher and that's when I plan on applying to Japanese Language schools.

What schools are suitable for me? I want to work in Japan after that, so I need a Japanese language school (preferably in Tokyo) that would take me to JLPT N2 in terms of speaking ability as well.

I've researched a lot of language schools but I am still lost and thought I'd seek advice here.

The correct way:

1. See keyword
2. match keyword to story
3. recall component parts from story strengthening your ability to recall the radicals
4. Write kanji

With time step 2 and 3 become unncessary because you've strengthened the bond between keyword and writing the kanji

your way:

Card tells you how to write the kanji from the story being given to you, your recall memory doesn't get strengthened and you don't built a mental link between the keyword and writing of the kanji.

about 25 days. i will be done with rtk1 on the 2nd of next month. then i will resume sentence card creation. i will continue to review rtk and make the story field white text so you have to highlight it to see it. i will also add japanese words to supplement the heisig keyword and aid with distinguishing synonyms while working on the japanese <-> kanji connection. i'd like to just have japanese keywords and japanese definitions of kanji from dictionaries on the front with the kanji on the back (basically monolingual kanji study) in the future

I remember when I was 6/7 years old and learning English for the first time. I felt the same. I just repeated phrases I've heard on TV and in songs knowing only vaguely what they meant. It took me years to become this fluent. I wish I could learn Japanese through my native language directly, but I have to do it via English so it's nasty because my native language (Croatian) functions differently, so it goes kind of like this kana>reading out loud in my mind>meaning in Croatian>answer in English

the purpose of mnemonics is not to learn things, it's to make it easier to recall things that you would have otherwise already forgotten.

this can be mistaken for learning, but if you depend on an mnemonic to remember something, then you haven't actually learned it. i don't know the numbers of the individual months. i have to sing the months song in my head while counting to access that information.

learning kanji with mnemonics is the same way. doing so does not mean you actually know the kanji, even if you are capable of recalling the mnemonic instead of needing to be prompted with it.

you need to be able to recognize the kanji in text, what words are being spelled with it, and, finally, be able to recall which kanji are used in a particular word to actually know the kanji.

this is also why doing rtk when you literally know no japanese is silly. you will not be able to actually use the ability to recall which parts go where in what order until you already have the other kanji knowledge down, which you cannot acquire without actually going through the process of learning japanese. it will take a very long time before you are able to convert rtk's mnemonic association into true knowledge.

if you just want to make a mental dictionary entry for the kanji you can do so with exposure flashcards much faster and with much less effort than actually doing rtk.

kanji exposure is fine for learning shit like 日 and 月 but in my experience i couldn't tell you which kanji is used in 微妙 even though i can read it just fine. rtk is really effortless once you can read, you're just sorting shit out in your head and training your eyes a lot harder than you are when you're reading fluently (youreyes just recognize the basic shapes and you know what word it is based off context as well). basically rtk is just focused production training. if you don't want to write then your time is better spent reading massive amounts of japanese

you're misunderstanding the point yes

you're not going to be able to retain your kanji composition recall ability without going through the mnemonic until you put it into use for a long period of time, and you don't know enough japanese to be able to put in the practice necessary to retain it (writing out passages of text, complete with words and grammar)

I thought of starting with the radical approach, they don't quite look like scribbles but the sheer volume can be pretty overwhelming, especially when there are several combined to form one word and the pronunciation is different. How the hell do I get over that?
