This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

I also have a Kindle, but it's a super old model with no touch screen. I remember that it only recognized less than half of the words I highlighted. The Kobo at least recognizes all kanji, although not conjugated forms. Maybe new Kindles are better in this regard though.

considering that you used the feminine aspect of the rainbow and then repeated a character three times in variant forms, I'd say what you're getting at is an incest orgy of twinks depicted on a Japanese art medium, because it only makes sense that way if the third character is understood to be Japanese. 100% this. you'll more quickly be able to distinguish and remember kanji and you can do RTK and read at the same time so there's really no reason not to do it. moreover you can learn to write, which you may or may not find useful but it's a nicety. even people who became fluent (i.e. understanding 90% or more of the content they read and listen to) before doing RTK can attest to the fact that RTK helps you recognize and remember kanji.

Podcasts seem to be the most easily available options but I haven't enjoyed it too much as a medium. I have also thought about audio books or something read out but those things don't seem to be widely available (unless I am missing a resource to pirate audio CDs somewhere). The ideal would be just people having casual conversations or non-sexual ASMR (if there is such a thing), but again no clue where to get such a thing. Hello , I've been learning japanese for a year and half, I recently started seriously studying Kanji and I wanted to ask how do others do when learning the readings of a kanji which has many, for example 下 has :
Kun: した、 しも、 もと、 さ.げる、 さ.がる、くだ.る、 くだ.り、 くだ.す、 -くだ.す、 くだ.さる、 お.ろす、 お.りる
On: カ、 ゲ
I know not all are used that much, my question is, should i learn a handful of them, even if i don't know the vocabulary in where they are used, or should i learn 1 or 2 that i know the words, in this example it would be した , ゲ.
Also does anyone know a site that sorts all the readings by most used ones?.
Lots of thanks.

The point of your first playthrough of Pokemon is to expose yourself to new words/grammar/etc and find the handful of things you CAN completely understand, or barely don't understand.

Mine it. Jot down 20 words from it every day, and drill those words. Stop playing as soon as you get 20, but don't just take down any random words. Only ones you encounter more than once. Stop playing as soon as you get those 20. Repeat. You can play longer as you go on because you'll encounter less of those words.

From there, after it starts taking an unreasonable amount of time to get those 20, start taking down other words you don't know or that catch your eye. Same thing applies here. Just mine it.

Guaranteed 100% that your 2nd playthrough down the road will be far better because you'll know all the words/grammar. Guaranteed that your next pokemon after this will be more enjoyable because you'll know a lot of words to go in with, and have a lot of fresh ones to learn.

The Japanese way, much like the Pokemon one, is long and precipitous. But it gets better, if you're willing to train hard every single day.

25 a day with 90% retention. Make sure you're visualizing your stories, and you work through your story in your head as you write out the kanji (write them in the air to make it faster).

If there's a kanji/component you're not remembering well because its keyword (and thus your image) is too abstract, then change the image you associate with that keyword. For example instead of associating the component that resembles an "x" with "sheaf", change it to "x-men". Instead of associating 糸 with "thread", associate it with "spiderman". Steal ideas from comments on kanji koohii if you have to. They have a lot of good ones. Some are shit and still too abstract and in those cases it's best to make up your own or modify theirs

Yes, I'm using Nihongo no Mori.
Well, I somehow understood most of what Kento (handsome teacher) was saying in the N3 tutorial video. Also the N4-N5 tutorial is incomplete. The dude only made 2 out of 4 series and it's been on hiatus for 3 years now. So I don't know if I'm ready for N3 tutorial or not or if there's other resource for me to complete my N4 stuff. I can pass N4 sample test easily, but I don't know if there's grammars stuff that I missed.

I found this website http://japanesetest4you.com and I think its level is considerably higher than other websites. I tried doing some of its reading test and found out that I'm actually awful at reading and understanding stuff that's not a simple sentence. This makes me even more unsure if I'm ready for studying N3 stuff.

That's what the manual claims. And then it tells you the formula to adjust the interval modifier for the cases where it doesn't work/people who want a different retention rate.

>Interval modifier allows you to apply a multiplication factor to the intervals Anki generates. [...] You can thus use the multiplier to make Anki present cards more or less frequently than it would otherwise, trading study time for retention or vice versa.

What's the ??? part? I hear アンチキラ機械群, but could it be a mispronounced Antikythera? Or is it "Anti-killer"? Or just "Antikira"? And is it more likely to be 機械群 or 機械軍? Also, is バルカン more likely to be Balkan or Vulcan? I don't think it's a weird gundam seed reference after all, but who knows...

The radical of 顰 is quite useful. It's 卑. The 「いやしい」 character, you know? The top part is just the phonetic 頻, of 頻繁 fame.

It's at 蹙 where it stops being perfectly convenient, because the 足 radical is not useful for understanding the role of the character in that compound, and the phonetic element 戚 (seen in 親戚) is not perfectly phonetic.

Either way, set the font larger or don't read from your monitor.

I do think it's a great picture. It can troll even the people who are good at Japanese. That kangamiru character appears once in the kyuujitai form and again in the shinjitai form, leading you to think that they must be different characters. Then, as if to mock you, only that character and no other appears partially off-screen again, for no other reason but to taunt you further. As you give up and resort to the dictionary, having failed to identify that character despite your superb skills in deducing shinjitai from kyuujitai, you, now humiliated, notice that all along, the shinjitai double was presented in a different font. Say whatever you want, the author must have been a genius.

Anki is a balance between reps and retention. You might be able to increase your retention by making cards come up more frequently, but then you will have more reps to do all the time. But having lower retention also causes more reps because of lapses. In conclusion, I have no idea what is best so I just leave everything as it is.
