I know Perfume are dead. But I can't abandon them while they're still active. I know I'm going to end up giving Future Flop at least 3 listens when it comes out. At least Cosmic Explorer had some good songs. There are only 5 songs we haven’t heard (not including the customary intro track). I’ve listed my track ratings below based on how much I enjoy them. So far I’m yet to hear a good song. I’m predicting‘Tiny Baby’ is gonna be some cutesy whack cut, similar to baby face, but worse. Track 2- Future Flop, is either gonna be a mostly instrumental banger (like edge), or some attempt at a westernised pop anthem, with some awkward english thrown and the chorus will contain the words future pop. Out of the 3 remaining tracks that are in kanji, one of them will be good and the other 2 will be decent. Its pretty obvious looking at the track listing there will be no flow, which would be fine if most the tracks banged (but obviously they don’t). Overall, I’ll probably end up giving the album 4.5/10 based on my predictions. For context my I’ve also given my ratings on their previous albums. I was planning to go this deep, but this is bound to get someone triggered, so at the very least, its adding some contribution.

What people don't realize is how important that polyrhythm is. It's like a fuck you to the radio. The song starts off like a normal pop song but then you get to the bridge and those polyrhythms hit you and fuck you up. After it's done you get a beautiful transition to those chords and their singing. People always wonder why this was the song that sky rocketed them to the top, but think about it, nakata new exactly what he was doing. This song had to be a hit or they would be dropped. Now I don't know how much he cared about the group back then but, the bold smart move he made. Starting it off with a nice catchy techno pop sound, which seemed popular at the time, simple pop chord progressions and catchy pop melodies but then, he breaks the rules of traditional pop music and those polyrhythms surprise you. I think I remember reading somewhere that their management where telling him to keep that part out but nakata told them to trust him with. To this day that is still the most memorable and one of the most influential things about perfume. It's so dumb that the radio still plays that edited version without the polyrhythm. This is what made yasutaka nakata one of the best things in pop music. His bold creative decision's that clearly was just him being himself. Not caring about anything but how he wants his music to sound. Pop genius.

Disappointing perhaps, but not dumb. Radio is radio, kohai. Broadcasting for mass appeal is their core business model and radio-edits "fix" aspects of a song which could make "typical" (read: casual) listeners change stations.

Polyrhythmic beats/melodies are an acquired taste; to a lot of people it just sounds like the song went off-tempo. It isn't the musical progression they anticipated and they end up "thinking" about the song instead of relaxing with the flow since the brain is wired to analyze the unexpected. This is common business knowledge in recording so I've zero doubt you're right about skeptical management.

It's this principle taken to the extreme that causes me (and 98% of everyone else) to rank Free Jazz below the sound of a lactose-intolerant shit in terms of listening enjoyment.

I honestly might have checked for skipping if my first time hearing the song had been with physical format; the way it blindsides with zero build is definitely love/hate, so radio plays it safe.

the problem with the thread is that while usually the number of posters are large, most conversations seem to be spearheaded by the same people, in times like these where perfume disappoints us again, most of the people who ground the conversation leave for a bit or just lose the will to post, I've seen this quite a few times, Pick me up done this to perfume gen before, cosmic explorer done this, tokyo girl done this and if you wanna all done this to the thread before.

usually the thread swells after an announcement and then it dies, then the sad saps drive the thread in one direction, usually a bad one. I'm also guilty of this, I really drive the thread in an anti-perfume direction which doesn't really promote conversation that much while cringey-kun will get obnoxiously lewd which pretty much alienates people who aren't a sexiual deviant. no offense, I just don't like to mix social interaction with masturbation.

I think the way to make the threads healthier is probably to speak a little more candidly in times like this. it's what fixed it last time and made it as good as it has been until FP was revealed.

I feel like speaking about why we're even still here and how perfumes used to make us feel or how they currently make us feel might be the cathartic conversation that people need. I mean at this point I'm sure the vast majority of us don't like the direction perfume is going in but I don't think that talking about that has to be inherently negative.

If You Wanna is too short and it never feels like the song actually gets started, but Everyday is great. Mugen Mirai. Title track is...meh at best. it picks up during the chorus but the verses are just resident sleepers. FUSION is one of those songs like STORY where audio wise, its kind of meh, but I bet in a arena settings it's going to be just as good as Story.

Its funny to think that the other realistic contenders are the 2 other acts that are so loathed on here. I'm thinking Babymetal and KPP as outside contenders. They're both popular amongst westerners. Actually babymetal could have a decent chance if they take some of the more quirky/kawai aspects out of their music, and tone down on the edgy metalcore aspects of their music. I don't know if KPP will be around after this album. Honestly thinking about it I can't think of a more suitable candiate than perfume.
