This is a Japanese language learning thread designed by and for those interested in traditional otaku media such as anime, manga, light novels, and Japanese video games.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Read the guide before asking stupid questions.

You shouldn't use Japanese subtitles when watching your animes. Even though it's for listening comprehension I find myself reading the subtitles for 85% of the content instead.
It's a crutch that holds you back.

I can barely understand the JP subtitles, why would I watch without them when I stand no chance?

I'm not going to enjoy it if I don't understand what's going on, and I won't want to watch it again when I am actually ready to start watching without subs.

I took the N4 last year and it was a LOT tougher than it is made out to be. The listening was not “slowly spoken” at all (and they say it only once, not twice like in the N5) and there was only a little furigana. There were actually a lot of kanji in the reading (and other parts of the test) that didn’t have furigana and that I didn’t even recognize probably because I kind of expected the furigana and hence would remember the word based on that..my mistake so, as a warning, learn to read without the furigana! Needless to say I didn’t pass and will be taking it again this year! Minnasan, ganbate!

I have taken Japanese lessons for around a year and a half. I am familiar with Hiragana and Katakana although I do have to think about it for a moment with some of them. We have covered basically all of the Japanese For Busy People book 1, although we don't always use it. So I understand -te form and it's uses and the use of adjectives. I was thinking that Genki text book and workbook might be the best way to further improve with some self study along with the Kanji Look and Learn book. I feel like a need to learn Kanji and build up my vocabulary since I still find I am unable to read Japanese.

Is there anything else I can do? Or any other recommendations, I feel a bit overwhelmed with it all and I'm a bit unsure how to go about it at the moment.

>> No.19227363

>>19227075
do what motivates you, that's the most important thing, but if you don't understand enough japanese to be able to get by with subs, you'll probably progress faster focusing on written media until you're at the point where you'd understand at least 80% of the dialogue if you could make it out.

If you have time to read this and take lessons you should be reading actual stuff instead. Honestly, just read Tae Kim/Sakubi, do Anki and reading, that's all there is to learn the language. Anki will help you build up your dictionary and reading (articles, interview, books, manga, preferably everything) will put those words into context. You'll learn kanji over-time as you learn new words, since you can naturally figure out the meanings of kanji through their usage in various words, your brai will do that automatically.

It takes time but it works. That's if your primary goal is to consume Japanese fiction. If you want to be able to engage in conversation with Japanese then I guess it's better to take some practical course aimed at this since /jp/ method is more suited to acquiring language over longer period of time.

So I'm almost two years in and I've realised that I spent way too much time on kanji/vocab recognition through anki. I have been working through VNs and don't mind where my reading is at, but my listening and speaking/production are poor. I used to do jpod101, but stopped during uni, and my only listening practice has been coming from streaming Japanese TV at night. I am now off from uni for 3 months and my main concern right now is production, what do you guys recommend for improving this skill? I am considering making an E > J sentence deck. I have tried to keep a diary in the past, but found it to be too repetitive and I often try to rephrase what I'm trying to say so it fits the grammar I know. Maybe I need to try something like lang8, maybe go over genki/taekim again and this time try to really hammer it into my thinking through producing 100s of sentences with each point. Just looking for methods you guys have found effective.

Imagine being this far up your own ass before you've even started learning Japanese because a bottle peeing autist (that also studied for close a decade) told you to do the mnemonics book.

Why don't you fuck off and do your Kanji drills? Nobody benefits from your blogposting, let people actually learning Japanese fill the thread with thoughtful questions.

You know, you could have associated kanji with actual Japanese words, especially as most of the simpler kanji do appear in single-kanji words. Instead you are associating kanji with heisig's keywords that are useless at best.

I did it for about 6 months, then dropped it to do WaniKani which worked a lot better for me, then I went back to it. Honestly, even if you want to avoid WaniKani for the cost and the 'definite' pacing (the pacing works well for me but it might not for you), I really recommend isolated Kanji study.

The best investment for me was definitely a tutor, just an hour a week and my Japanese ability and especially confidence has skyrocketed from what is was. Again, YMMV.

If you don't want to do that most eroge is short so you can count it as 50 pages like watching manga.

Also 10000 pages and 1000 hours of anime is arbitrary as it depends on consistency and what you read so just keep it in mind as maybe a goal.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand 日常. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of 日本語 most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also ナノ's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike 日常 truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in はかせ's existential catchphrase "アハハハ," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as あらゐ けいいち's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

And yes, by the way, i DO have a 日常 tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid

You don't, because katanakana is a meme. It's barely used in Japanese so there's really no reason to learn it, which explains why our boy Steve is so bad at reading it. In fact, that applies to hiragana too. That's why I always advise people in this thread to drop learning both of them because kana is basically the baby version of the language, and it's equivalent to learning how to read, write and speak from Tommy Pickles. Then cut straight to kanji, with the fastest way of learning the basic 3000 that you need to read a simple children's book being to print them all out and copy them by hand (pro tip: tracing them saves some time). Once you've done that, you're probably ready to practice speaking, so just go outside and use all the kanji you learned over the last 2 years (as per the above) by narrating your life as best you can out loud. Film it and review it daily to monitor your sick moon gainz. Lastly, move to Japan and teach English.
Good luck, cunt.

You can do that, ask for help here or just move past stuff you don't understand. It'll all work out so long as you keep reading.
