Hi DJT! Been a while. I have a present for you.

This is my pet project I've been working on for a long time. A few hawk-eyed DJT regulars might remember this post (https://desuarchive.org/int/thread/80592691/#80666721)) from when I was almost done the first time around and then everything died. Well, I finally rebuilt everything and added a bunch of new stuff as well.

Basically it's a huge (1.4 GB) pack of pre-timed Japanese subtitles for a whole bunch of different anime (425 in this first version). I took subtitles from kitsunekko as well as from my own rips of Netflix and Bandai Channel and retimed them all with kaegi's Aligner, renamed them, and put them each in their own folders. All you have to do is download the indicated fansub release to the right directory and the subs are right there, ready to go. Obviously I don't have every anime in existence with Japanese subs available, but I imagine this will still be a big time-saver for a lot of people, especially those just starting out learning Japanese. Anyway, here you go! All I ask is if you have any questions, read the readme.

How do you become a translator for games/anime/manga? I was thinking about seriously starting to learn Japanese. I'm not exactly new to this, I'm 24 and have been consuming Japanese media all my life. I've taken a "half assed" attempt at learning Japanese a few years ago so I know hiragana and katakana already. I also know a tiny bit of vocab/grammar/kanji simply from the nature of my hobbies. Basically, I have an extremely small and rough foundation already. But I was thinking about actually starting to take this seriously and study for the JPLT. Or do I even need to that? What level should I aim to pass? I have a shitty bachelors degree in IT but that's it and honestly I fucked up and chose the wrong major. I was thinking about starting my own translation blog where I would import, scan, and translate various things. I'm not new to buyfagging and I already have some stuff I could scan for example. Do I need to be able to speak the language fluently too or just translate it? I'm not aiming for interpreter but I how fluent are you expected to be? Any help or advice would be appreciated DJT.

focusing on the tests distracts you from getting good at the language, but there are translators who aren't good at the language, so you can focus on jlpt if that's more important to you. depends what you mean by truly fluent. you need to speak to natives to get good at speaking, but you can get highly fluent in terms of comprehension without living in japan. how much is enough to consume raw media depends on if the raw media is limited to anime and manga or not. ultimately you decide your goals, but i think it's better to focus on learning to comprehend media, and then go take n1 when you think you could do the job and the test looks very easy without studying for it.

Thanks, this helps a lot. I'm a good writer so I'm not worried about that part at least. I think I have the ability to study and pass the test but I don't think I'll ever be able to actually speak naturally with natives and therefore not truly be fluent. Is there a good place to easily learn and interactively practice grammar? I've learned a lot of vocab from anki and the entire WaniKani vocab and kanji list but grammar is so boring and can't be anki'd.

Tae Kim's is too dry and boring and the djtguide grammar isn't interactive.

I did Bunpro for a few weeks and then got bored of it too. Probably gonna go back but just wanna check if there are other options.

The "Subs" folder for each series is where I did my retiming work, extracting the English subtitles to use as reference and storing the original, untimed, downloaded Japanese subtitles, before retiming them to make the final ones. Basically you're free to ignore the "Subs" folder unless you want to use the reference and downloaded subtitles to make new, improved subs for some series I didn't time to 100% accuracy.

Nah, it's not necessary.
I suggest you pick up yotsuba right now. There's more to language than words. You need to become familiar with somewhat weird speech patterns ("weird" for us, native speakers of European languages) and slang (e.g. 何やってんだ？ = 何やっているのだ？).
When you see an uncommon words, just look it up, make sure you understand the sentence it was used in and move on.

Hey I just wanted to tell you that you have probably done more for me learning Japanese than any of those meme Youtubers that get shilled all the time here. I make flashcards with audio, sentences and screenshots from anime (not using subs2srs but my own method) and the most trouble I've had so far is finding good subtitles as I can't retime in the player that lets me mine them easily. Now I actually have a big selection of things I can watch and don't have to worry about running out of subtitles, this gets said light all the time but you are truly doing god's work. When starting off I did 30-50 because it was pretty easy at first. Then I eased down to 20-30, and now that I've passed the 4k mark I do 10, adding an extra 10 if the words are too easy. I try to keep my amount of 'young' cards between 500 and 600, this tends to keep my daily reps around 100-120 which is a comfortable amount for me.

I do feel like after ~2000-3000 words it's not that important to progress through the deck quickly anymore. You've got a solid base for reading (simple) stuff so you can take it easy and increase the amount of text you read rather than stubbornly doing a lot of cards every day, which imo is more enjoyable and more educational.

Also obviously the workload you develop in Anki is cumulative, so since you've got old cards which are coming back as well as new cards you're adding every day your workload will only increase if you keep your amount of daily cards the same.

Thank you anon, that really means a lot. One of my biggest problems when I was starting out was that there were almost no timed subs at all. My favorite Japanese medium is anime by a long shot so it was vexing being relegated to just VNs and manga. Of course you could just listen raw but it frustrated me to no end when I couldn't understand a line no matter how hard I tried. So I basically gave up on watching anime at all. Eventually I tried to make my first timed subtitle pack, but my hard drive died and I lost all motivation. Then finally, in the last couple months with Bandai and Netflix's full catalogue becoming available, I decided to just power through and remake the whole thing. extra work wasn't necessary for me, i wrote every kanji the first time i got to it just a couple of times, and never again. when i got stroke order wrong in anki i failed the card (usually. sometimes i focused on remembering the kanji in general until i had that down, and then i started being more strict on stroke order). i definitely had leeches, but they all worked themselves out eventually, and the leeches where i couldn't remember the actual kanji were a much more significant problem. you will stop associating 金 with 生 and 全 after a while.
that's my experience though, you probably don't need to worry about it, but feel free to try stuff.
