Many people that learn languages effectively say that speaking is the most important thing. The more you speak in the language you learn, even if you make lots of mistakes, you'll learn your targeted language much faster.

I don't really know how to practice speaking since I don't have any Japanese people near that I could talk to.

What are your methods on practicing the speaking part? I'm thankful for any suggestions. :)

Once you understand what a particular piece of grammar means, don't ever look at a translation again and forget what it said. You have to take in the logic of the grammar in Japanese, instead of translating it mentally every time you encounter it.

It's like how you hear "neko" and know what it means without having to translate it mentally. The word "cat" may not even appear in your mind. "Neko" just becomes a synonym like "feline", rather than a foreign word you feel the need to translate. The same thing should eventually happen with all the grammar structures and shit.

A. お弁当を食べた。

You can take this sentence and add it in front of a noun like 学生.

お弁当を食べた 学生が公園に行った。

See how the first sentence is in there. It's used like an adjective to modify the noun "student".

B. 学生だ。

You CANNOT put B in front of a noun like what I just did with A.

So something like,
学生だ ミクちゃんが家に帰った。
doesn't make any sense.

Allow me to interject for a moment. What you guys are referring to as reading manga, is in fact, reading the text in manga, or as I've recently taken to calling it, manga plus reading. Reading manga is not reading itself, but rather another action that causes full functioning reading to happen, made useful by the printed words, optional furigana, and vital visual components comprising comprehensible input as defined by Stephen Krashen.

Many Japanese learners realize modified version of the reading method every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of reading which is widely used today is often called "reading manga", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically reading, according to the consumption of text.

There really is manga, and these people are consuming it, but it is just a part of the method they use. Manga is the medium: the text in the material that causes language acquisition within the reader's mind. The text is an essential part of a reading experience, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete comprehensible context. Manga is normally used in combination with the reading method: the whole package is basically reading with manga added, or reading/manga. All the so-called "manga" methods are really methods of reading/manga.

Enlighten me then. From what I understand, the python interpreter only needs to find all the necessary libraries and functions and it should work fine. Granted, it's probably a giant pain in the ass to get a decent python environment running in Windows, but I don't see why it wouldn't be possible as long as all the libraries have windows binaries. It's not the same as some compiled C program.

I have limited experience with Korean and lots of experience with Mandarin Chinese, so here goes:

Korean
>grammar similar
>vocab 100% wtf different
>learning to read Korean script doesn't take very long

Mandarin Chinese
>grammar is remarkably similar to English on a basic level
>on the flip side, like English, it's reasonably simple at its core and easy to learn the basics, with hidden depths that are exponentially harder to master
>Easier to read the Hanzi since most ones in common use only have a single reading and haven't been entirely corrupted by years of loading them up with new pronunciations/meanings
>Harder to read in practice since you have no Kana to use as a crutch
>tones will either fuck your shit up or be incredibly easy and it all depends 100% on how early you start incorporating them into your study. Drill tones from day 1 and within a month you won't even have to think about it.
>lots of material to read/listen to, but on average not very high quality.
>lots of people in existence to speak Mandarin with, but actually finding them is the task. Go work at a national park or something and you can become conversationally competent in 1-2 summers because they hire something like 50% chinese/taiwanese/malaysian workers, all of whom speak Mandarin.

Choose Chinese if this is actually something you're considering.

Anyone else crams and use review forgotten cards later in the day with anki? My retention seems to have improved compared to just doing only a regular review. It does seem to go against anki's space retention thing since I review all my forgotten cards not just the ones I forget at that day.

If you study them on the same day I fail to see how it could fuck with spaced retention as you'd already seen them that day.

Are there any "intensive" learning resources available for Japanese? For other languages there are books that are aimed at teaching you to read a language at an advanced level in the fastest manner possible. These are normally used in "intensive" courses in colleges in order to make graduates capable of reading academic publications in a matter of months (e.g. French for Reading by Sandberg). I don't expect something of that speed for Japanese, of course, since it is too far removed from English for that to be possible. But I guess I'm asking if there are any courses available which are geared toward this sort of goal and concentrate on building you up to an advanced reading ability, rather than just teaching you the basics.

I can't! I can't find anything interesting! I downloaded bunch of raw magazine, but all of them are complete shit! It turns out that I don't actually like manga at all!!!! I asked about this one time and they told me the words were technically the same but that it was just a different conjugation. So for example the word I'm supposed to know is "run", but in the sentence it's actually "ran". It can make things kinda confusing for a beginner.

I think I only read a third of the book, but it was about the protagonist getting over a loss in her immediate family (IIRC her mother) and having to move out of her home. She gets picked up by some random dude around her age that knew her mother. She gets cheered up a lot by this carefree dude who allows her to stay in his home. There's also some bits like meeting her ex boyfriend who she is still friends with, and the new guy's girlfriend getting pissed at letting the protag stay at his house and a "Ah, I could see myself falling in love with this guy" line. Standard women demographic stuff.
There was also the constant depressive thinking due to that death in her immediate family that kind of got grating pretty quickly.

The transvestite mom was hilarious though, and I like the way Banana describes scenery, which was a big part of づぐみ.

Nope, multiple people including Matt have said to just listen and don't rely on subtitles and don't worry too much about looking up the words. If you recognize a word enough times you can look it up though. You're supposed to actively watch content for hours each day for a week. Later you take that content you watched and chop it up into audio clips, and then passively listen to those clips the next week, while continuing to actively watch new content. And so on.

Caring about helping people doesn't mean shit if you don't know enough Japanese to do it. I remember a couple of months after I stopped posting on /int/ I decided to check that thread out of curiosity and I saw a German poster who tried to help someone but somehow couldn't tell the difference between 者の and the adversative conjunction ものの. こんにちは DJT! I have a rather unusual question. I play an online game on a Japanese server and have been thinking of how I can politely ask a random group of players if they would let me "reserve" an item that drops from a boss fight. My best bet is something like this:
(Item name)が欲しいんですが、要らなかったら、僕にあげてください。よろしくお願いします!
I'm very worried I will come off sounding rude to the other players with this. I'm also not too happy about using あげる but I cant think of what else I could use. I'm trying to say "could you leave it for me?", or something to that effect.

Any help at all would be great! :)

We need something to encapsulate the relative clause into a unit that we can perform actions on.
Why isn't the generic の particle used there instead of と then?

BTW I understand quoting what people said, paraphrasing it, our own thoughts and defining how something is called with という, but I don't get the whole description of things thing... Maybe the examples in Tae Kim are shit?

>We learned how to use 「という」 to describe what something is known or referred to as. However, we can take this idea even further by attaching two relative clauses.
what does this even mean?

という is by far the most difficult part in that chapter.
Read about this grammar in a few more sources. Manga can also help a lot. I suggest you read Yotsuba first. You won't encounter という there, but it will help you get used to the language and seemingly weird speech patterns.
When one chapter doesn't take more than an hour, move on to something slightly more difficult. In 徒然チルドレン, for example, と-grammar is all over the place.

Yeah, you're a student and have more control over your schedule. I used to be able to do that too in uni. I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as weeb, is in fact, Wapanese/Weeaboo, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Wapanese plus Weeaboo. Weeaboo is not a meaningful term itself, but rather another freeform offshoot of the fully functioning Wapanese term made by combining the vital word components Wannabe and Japanese.
Many internet users use a modified version of the term Wapanese every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Wapanese which is widely used today is often called “weeb”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the term Weeaboo, developed from the term Wapanese. There really is a weeb, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the original word.
Weeaboo is the real term: the alternative to using the original while being able to maintain the same meaning and nuance. Weeb are essential letters in the spelling of the full term, but useless by themselves; they can only function in the context of the complete term. Weeb is normally used in combination with three more letters: the whole thing is basically Wapanese with Weeaboo added, or Wapanese/Weeaboo. All the uses of the so-called “weeb” are really uses of Wapanese/Weeaboo.

I'm making this post from the POV of a UK resident but it MIGHT apply to US people or people in other countries too. I can only be sure for the UK though.

On the page for the Tobira textbook from Amazon.co.uk, Tobira alone costs £67+. However, if you make an account on the Japanese Amazon site, you can buy it for ~£37, and when I added the whole set (the textbook, grammar practice book and kanji practice book) to check, it cost only around £80, whereas from the UK site it's around double that price. Plus you get amazon points or something, which seem to be like a reward/redeemable thing you don't get from Amazon UK.

This is the total price with postage and imports included, and it might change depending on different variables. I'm using the Amazon converter but if you pay in yen with some kind of international credit card it'd probably be cheaper, but maybe depending on your area the imports/postage might cost more.

The only downside of this is that it might take a bit longer to arrive, but I think a pretty huge saving like that is worth it, and if you value your money over time make sure to consider this option first.

when I was going thru RTK i was in a blissful state and didn't post AT ALL on /djt/ because there was simply nothing to discuss, you just go through the book one kanji after another

actually to be quite honest I went through RTK relatively faster than through Tae Kim, and the former is supposed to be the real obstacle
collecting kanji is quite easy when you get used to it, but with grammar book there's just too much shit you may prolong trying to feel it out and be very precise with it, especially when you have mild OCD and go through shit many times until you 'get' it

Currently doing Anki and a grammar chapter. Occasionally doing Lingodeer for side practice.

isn't Tae Kim's grammar site/book old as fuck? why hasn't there been a single person since then who would improve upon his ideas and write a guide that is actually written in correct English, without errors and inconsistencies in the examples?

is Tae Kim's a pleb filter and you have to suffer through its abysmal facade to get to the real goodies that it undoubtedly presents?

Totally, I loved the literal translations. I was referring to actual explanations of grammar that he made outside of the examples, where he uses confusing language, makes mistakes or simply contradicts himself.
