I think I get things a lot more than I did at the start, but there are still some sentences I don't understand. I usually stop and try to figure it out or click ahead and try to read back with context, and then most times it becomes clear, but those moments are a lot more infrequent. I haven't come across a point where I've felt completely lost to the meaning for a while now. I find it easier also to keep an entire sentence in short term memory where before it was just impossible.

Its more of a frustration for my case though, as my vocabulary is far better compared to my kanji recognition skills. Whenever I'm reading VN, I can understand 100% all the voiced lines, but when not voiced it can be a struggle to get through. Let's say I wanted to make a living as an English novelist and hopefully go down in history as a great writer.

Is studying Japanese a bad choice of hobby? Is the only way to gain any Japanese skill to do "all Japanese all the time" and dedicate my life to the language as Khazumoto says? Or is it possible to put a small amount of time into Japanese and achieve enjoyment, without it adversely affecting my skills at writing in English?

I guess what I'm asking is, both writing a great novel and learning Japanese are herculean tasks. Is it bad to try and take on two herculean tasks at the same time?

Each bit of input you consume each day gives diminishing results. After a few hours, the next few hours are less important, because your brain is still recovering from/learning from what you're taken in for that day. And while two native speakers devoted giving the child exposure helps, there have been plenty of examples of children who acquired language without such an environment. Adults have potential to be BETTER at acquiring language, both because they can actively seek out their weak points, and because they are only learning the language and not about world concepts simultaneously. The problem is that adults tend to go about it in a completely different way. They do ridiculous things like engaging in dumbed down conversations with tutors and repeating set phrases, keeping their listening level tied with their speaking level, unnecessarily crippling their listening level. You are overstating the amount and quality of input that the average child receives. They still learn it fine because they are receiving input and some of it is decent.
