what's the grammar behind じゃあ? I know it means that you're thinking about something before saying something else, but what kind of grammar is it? I've seen that it's an elongation of じゃ which is a casual abbreviation of では which is a combination of the contextual and topic particle and doesn't have any real connection to じゃあ in meaning at all. This. A road to success is acknowledging that the native words are abstract things representable as ideographs and accompanying phonetic clues if they apply (漢字＋送り仮名・振り仮名). Once you realize that, you will see for example "body" as an abstract カラダ representable through semantic containers 体, 體 or 身体, or even something else entirely (see: many authors taking extreme liberties in writing an ideograph and giving it an entirely different meaning). Then the language can be taken apart and different parts can be said to be the native 訓読み readings, but don't trust them - they exist not because of an ideograph requires it, but because the words require them. Suddenly everything makes more sense. If you wanna see something cool, look up the Meiji bible and what they did with the 義訓 there.
The words read with 音読み are an entirely different story, because they are basically "imported" from Chinese with readings made compatible with the native language (based on phonetic compounds). Thus it is pretty common to see a lot of set rules and same phonetic values for many of the similar ones. My advice: learn 音 readings by ideographs in the words you learn, but the 訓 readings through the entire words.

It's better if you forgo the translation entirely. You must try to decipher the meaning of the sentences yourself. Only after you've read it several times and still don't get it, you can try putting it through a machine TL but even then it'll usually be more wrong than not.

Language learning is a series of catch-22's

You need vocab to learn grammar, but you need grammar to understand things you're reading to acquire vocab, but you also need some basic understanding of the grammar just to start off.

Japanese is basically a big grind for the first 1000-2000 or so words, after which you will see meteoric gains because the grammar will come a lot easier than the vocab. This isn't like Spanish where you get to learn a modified version of the grammar you're already used to, using about 25% of the words you're already used to/latin roots to help. In a way, you already know the "kanji" of Spanish (latin roots) which knocks off several hundreds of hours from your learning time. There's also a good chance you know a lot of Spanish words just from living in the USA.

Also it's amazing how much grammar you need to know to express some pretty simple things, but once you have that grammar down and the words to supplement it you can just chain it all together and make infinitely complex shit out of it if you so choose.
