Most of the novels were 'difficult literature' and a few of the VNs were just as hard. I don't have any problem understanding the vast majority, but real mastery of grammar isn't even in sight. I'd be surprised if there was a single non-native in this thread who could read a full novel by someone like Mishima or Ougai and fully understand every sentence, or read Twitter all day and understand every tweet. There are a lot more kanji for you than kanken has. List of probably all kanjis from aozora bunko https://pastebin.com/MfRJEW6T.. But you would need even more than that (Actually I have 15+ kanjis that aren't there, I even came across some some of them while reading definitions in a japanese dictionary like in this article https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/jn/62897/meaning/m0u/隈取/ kanji 渲. And of course you better learn chinese because majority of important works in japanese are basically written with it.
But I don't know what pleasure you can find in archaic japanese literature if you aren't a professional historian specializing in japanese.

Then it kinda defeats the purpose of the nihonsiki, as it is (in my opinion) the lossless way of transcribing kana, i.e. you won't mistake 'zi' for 'di' and whatnot. Also, シ is not pronounced 'si' by English speakers, so I don't believe losing an '-u' "because English speakers don't discern between o and ou sound" is a good argument, Hepburn would be more useful.
The best way of lossless transcription would be to use the nihonsiki rules (i.e. one consonant per row, one vowel per column, also kixya (キャ) = kya and all the other examples where the transcription cannot be confused with any other), but to also apply it to any long vowels (i.e. Kotarou), where there would be no uncertainty in any way. It would be impossible to properly read it without knowing how Japanese pronunciation works, but if we're concerned about it, Hepburn is the way to go. But I'm not gonna advocate it, especially among people who actually want to read real Japanese and not its transcriptions in Latin alphabet.

I've doubled my daily new cards and my retention rate has gone up 15% since I started studying new cards through physical flash cards. Is there a reason for this (other than me being a retard etc)? I wager I do see each word more times this way, but I remember them much better after going through my "physical daily deck" once or twice than if I just looked at the screen.

I strive for 95% retention and above because it makes me enjoy Anki more. If I drop below 90% it tends to negatively effects my mood. I can easily maintain that retention rate adding 30+ new words a day now with little time spent in anki but earlier on I spent A LOT of time handwriting kanji to make that possible for me.

I filled up about 150 pages of legal pad, front and back, small handwriting, crammed so that there was almost no empty space with kanji. It would sometimes take me 2 hours a day. I think I did that for about the first thousand kanji, but after that the whole process sorta stuck in my head so I can differentiate and memorize new kanji without having to handwrite them. Now if I'm having trouble with a particular Kanji or word I trace out the kanji in my head, solidify it into a 3d shape and "jiggle" it around, and then write the reading in hiragana to boot. Sounds a little kooky but it works for me.

I have various techniques.
First and maybe most important: Do new cards and reviews separately. Don't know why this works for me but it does.
Second: Only mine, no premade shit. This should be obvious.
Third: You should start the card the very same day you add it to anki. This keeps the context fresh in memory.
Fourth: Try and reread whatever you mined from soon after so you see it again.
Fifth: Concretely visualize the word in your head, painting it one stroke at a time. Once you've painted the kanji, imagine it becoming solid and then jiggle it around like those psuedo 3d gifs you may have seen around.

I also don't use any sort of texthooker -> anki function. I always look up the word manually on jisho or one of the J-J sites and copy paste into anki from there.

I was writing them by hand at first, but got lazy and started just printing them out. I was also curious if it would have an impact on my retention rate as I also suspected that writing them out was one of the things that contributed to the improvement. I found 0 difference between handwritten and printed flashcards. Your point on working with the card resonates in that I holding them in my hands makes me remember them better, somehow.

When I was a beginner I read a few chapters of my first novel (夜は短し歩けよ乙女) and struggled a lot with the grammar. After a few chapters I switched to reading the (much harder) Saya no Uta. By the end of Saya I wondered if I had improved much because the game was still hard as balls. Then I went back to the novel I was reading before and it had become an absolute breeze grammatically.

On the other hand, Saya is short and WA2 is really fucking long. You're gonna be reading it for months. But you will certainly learn a lot if you're willing to do that.

Time binding it is sort of dumb, when something is learned, it's learned. It takes a different amount of time to learn new kanji/vocabulary. Kanji that appear in many compounds (-力, 最-, etc) are easier to learn compared to ones that aren't as common, as you aren't exposed to them as often.

As for grammar, it comes with study and exposure. You won't internalize the grammar until you see and hear it in the wild, but you won't know what you're looking/listening for without studying it for a bit.

It is learned when it's learned. Time binding just adds unnecessary stress to the learning process. I honestly find that I don't feel I have enough time in the day to study what I'd like to, but I'm often at it for 4-6 hours total in a day, and possibly more if you count vocab/kanji study at work.
