Knowledge of main meanings and readings of kanjis, so you need to have information that word 阡陌 has two kanjis that have kun reading みち, the first kanji also has ON as せん that means "thousand" and the second one has a reading ひゃく and はく, meaning "hundred". That's useful but it's also a pain learning words from a kanji→word perspective due to how so many words will seemingly arbitrarily use different readings that don't follow any set patterns. >>18939084
I don't know what you're trying to say. To memorize the word or kanji effectively you have to make associations (mnemonics) and since japanese writing is one hell of world on its own it's not a problem in most cases. If you learn the word like 阡陌 and its kanjis it means that you know the majority of native japanese words\reading so it doesn't take any effort to connect kun reading to a single kanji (in this case みち). When I learn word like 燧烽 I instantly notice that it should have reading すいほう because it has "sounding part" as in 隧 and 遂 and the second is even more obvious with 逢, 峰, 蜂, 蓬, 縫, 鋒. And both kanjis have fire radical. So next I look up meaning in a dictionary and see that it essentially means のろし and also each kanji has this reading separately. Obviously there are elusive words and kanjis that require your brain to work slightly more but overall it's basically as said above.

Let me ask you something...

If someone studied a musical instrument for six months and then "set up shop" (started teaching lessons), would you want to study with them? I know you want to make money, which is highly evident based on how you push the native audio files like a used car salesman LOL, but what gives you the right to be "educating" people when you are the one who needs to be educated? You might be morally fine with it based on your personality and environmental factors, but some of us are going to call you on it. I mean you can't even compete with George at this point, and that's pretty fucking sad bro because George is like an ant compared to Matt. In the real world, the most logical thing for you to do is become a 弟子 of someone like Matt before trying to run the show. Perhaps your Japanese partner (wife or GF) is giving you pressure about money? Many people are in the same situation, but you still have to do the right thing. The suckage of being an eikaiwa monkey will motivate you to really push up your standards in Japanese and allow you to make some good money at the same time. If you have what it takes, then you will eventually escape the industry. If not, you will stay trapped in the industry and look forward to nursing pints on the weekends at the Hub. In the end, it's all up to you.

You are fucking up the pronunciation of tons of basic words like "watashi." This is going to fuck people up from the get go just from listening to you. Do you fully understand the ramifications of what you are doing here?

That's the thing: it's not that consistent. What you think "should" be read as doesn't always work like that because words typically existed before kanji and the kanji readings themselves have changed over time and were introduced at different stages, meaning many kanji have multiple "sounding part"s and in instances すいほう is actually すいぼう or しゅうぽう, etc. for historic reasons that sometimes follow a bit of a pattern but not always.
当て字, 義訓, 湯桶読み, 重箱読み. These and the aforementioned different sounding parts are those speed bumps. They aren't a huge issue but I feel they are aspects which get overlooked when people wax poetically about kanji from a learners point of view. Your focus on "meaning" I feel is rather misplaced because it isn't the general meaning of a character in a word that becomes harder to grasp, it's recalling the correct pronunciation of the word itself.

Hello,

I am an intermediate Japanese learner/native English speaker currently working in Tokyo. I recently finished Genki II (though I still find myself referencing it) and my current teacher has started me on 学ぼう!にほんご 中級, which is a Japanese-only textbook slanted towards those looking to take the N2 (I don't particularly care about the N2, but it is the book my teacher wants to use).

I have two questions for those of you who have been at this sort of stage :

1) I use Anki flashcards every day for vocabulary cards that I manually enter. I have found that my recall isn't cementing as quickly as I would like. Is there something that you could suggest to help with this? It feels like my vocabulary list is gradually getting out of hand as I have to keep revisiting words that I have recently been introduced to.

2) As I said earlier, 学ぼう!にほんご is a Japanese-only text. I've had one lesson where we used it so far and it was incredibly difficult - all of the grammar points were confusing in some way or another, and it was difficult to the point of frustration. This may have been compounded by the fact that my teacher doesn't speak English, but I feel like it is copping out (and slowing myself down) to switch to a side-by-side textbook like An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese. Was this lesson just a hit to my pride, or was it really an indication that I'm in a little too deep?

Thanks for any advice you can give :)

I said nothing about writing it correctly being an ESL thing, I said correcting it is an ESL thing (in this thread specifically).
More to the point, natives sucking and making "mistakes" in their own language is a super common thing.
Also, anyone that's been on the internet long enough has gotten bored of correcting the same mistake over and over. Unless they're a grammar Nazi in an almost literal sense.

I know this post is bait but come the fuck on now, her "accent" sounds strange to you because you're not a native speaker, and she's also going out of her way to speak clearly so you can learn from her. Of course it's gonna sound weird, it'd be like you going to Japan and speaking 英語 to your friends, but super slowly so they have a chance to catch and understand the 外国人 degeneracy coming from your mouth.

if you unironically believe that MattVsJapan has a "better" accent than any native speaker, you should get back to your AJATTing and leave us the fuck alone.

No, it sounds strange because it is strange. I've watched thousands of hours of anime and listened to all 271 episodes of hkbk to know this. My comment about mattvsjapan having a better accent was tongue in cheek though.

So, I took a year off of learning Japanese. Life got pretty crazy in 2017. Any of you do the same at one point? What's the best way of getting back into the swing of things here? What did you guys do? Should I just dive in and study several hours a day? Start off by reviewing grammar? kanji?

>> No.18945957

>>18945939
I did the same. I started off by just reviewing words. Try reading some material and maybe watching a few of your favorite shows. Do something that helps you remember why you wanted to learn Japanese in the first place. Just do something involving Japanese, a little at a time, day by day. Eventually you'll get back to your old routine. Staying motivated is the hardest part.

That last bit is confusing me. Houtarou's older sister is writing to tell him where to find the back issues of the literature anthology his club is supposed to be writing, because she realizes the current club members need an example.
But then,
>鍵は壊れてるから、ナンバーはいらないわね。
Why is it she's suddenly saying they don't need them, and what the fuck does that have to do with the key being broken? Or am I parsing "ナンバーはいらないわね" wrong? Starting to think I should just read something easier.

I'm inclined to agree. If you're at the stage where you need a grammar guide, then you probably don't understand the sentences in said grammar guide very well (maybe not at all), so it seems a bad idea to make flashcards out of them. Not to mention, they're probably not very representative of how people actually use the language in real life.
