The Chinese have to overcome learning a non-tonal language with completely different sounds, learning a completely foreign grammar system, and the same syllabaries that everyone else has to pick up. A language like this makes it very difficult to know where to start. Hell, I'm getting back into the grove and am struggling as to whether to prioritize kanji, grammar, or vocabulary. Gets worse from there. Trying to get back into things. Stopped two years ago for reasons beyond my control. Using anki as your primary learning method once you are past the beginner stage isn't optimal, I think most people here can agree on that. However, you still, in all these threads have not demonstrated why using it to acquire the initial vocab base before transitioning into reading as your primary method is such a bad thing. 正直 here doesn't mean literally honest as in never telling lies, but basically means that the person is simple. i.e. incapable of actually going against what their own character/morals.

素直 here refers to the fact that despite being 正直 per above, this person isn't outwardly honest and tries to act hard/bad/cynical but fails in the end.

So with that in mind, I'd probably say something like. "[person] is a [description of what he/she is actually like] but he/she hides it/pretends to not"

or basically the Japanese equivalent to the English phrase "pretending to be someone you aren't" but with a slightly different nuance to it.

I don't really know the context of that text, but someone being 正直 but not 素直 doesn't necessarily have to refer to honesty. It can refer to any aspect of that person. So basically it could even refer to a prolific liar as long as the he's 正直 but not 素直. (For example, 欲望に正直)

Well that's where I got stuck at. For I (self-referential) you have 私、俺、僕 and the such. But when you look at it like that, the problem is that you aren't learning the words, you're learning the translations. When they say you can't learn Japanese, it's because you aren't. You're learning a poor mixture of translated shit. To learn 日本語 you need to learn the words themselves, how they fit into Japanese, and how a Japanese person would use/react to it. To the Japanese, there isn't five different ways to say I, there's just multiple words with specific uses for referring to yourself. These two languages developed entirely separate on opposite sides of the world, your inhibitions and set ideas born from being a native persumably English speaker WILL work against you.

I'm almost 3 months into learning Japanese. I read almost every day and do core2k every day. I think I've progressed.

I started working with the Genki books, I knew hiragana and katakana from before but I can say that my reading speed has improved. I also now know how to introduce myself and buy shit at the store. I still have troubles with remembering specific nouns though. Still, working at least two hours each day makes me realize that I advance slowly and I'm determined to continue.

I take about 500 cards with me and review them in groups of 25-50 between tasks. Note that I don't bring new cards with me, as I prefer to learn those in the comfort of my own home.

I've no idea how any of this stuff works, but it's a .txt file in Shift_JIS encoding apparently. What hinders rikai is the aozora-style furigana. It would read 叩いて for example, but not 叩《たた》いて, as it appears in the book. I figured there would be some simple way to search for every 《 and remove whatever comes after it to convert it to normal text.
