I just finished Higurashi and I have a few questions I'm still confused about. Planning to read Umineko next.

What's the deal with Frederica Bernkastel?

Are Rika and Hanyuu literally retarded? The latter is literally a ghost, there's no reason she couldn't have found out useful information to help break the cycle. Finding out who killed Tomitake and Takano would have been easy, especially since Rika herself acknowledged that that was probably something really important, but they never bother with that.

Rika has also gone through enough loops to memorize the triggers for her friends going crazy, but she still can't stop them? For Onikakushi-like worlds, it should have been easy considering her connections with the clinic, just have them call in K1 for a shot by telling them he's infected.

Why was Mion so quick to confess to Keiichi that her family didn't have anything to do with the mysterious murders in Tsumihoroboshi, but she doesn't even try explaining that/reasoning with Shion in Meakashi until the very end? Before she gets mindbroken, it seems like she's playing dumb, and even tells Shion that Satoshi is probably at the bottom of the well.

Why does Shion die in the credits of Tatarigoroshi? Was it just supposed to throw you off despite having no real relation to anything?

Is there anything else besides the main 8 arcs considered canon or worth reading?

Also, Mion was the cutest.

Why Umineko has so much more discussion than Higurashi, is it just because it's newer?

Because many people never read the original novel and the anime makes Higurashi seem just "ok" compared to Umineko. And the few people who did read the novel already had the entire thing spoiled for them by the anime, so it lessens the impact and makes the mystery boring.

Also, it gives you the answer directly, so there isn't that much room for discussion. Umineko discussions are always full of rosatricers or people doing mental gymnastics to deny the fact that their waifu is a creepy eunuch.

This. I loved the Higurashi anime when I was younger, so while I’m loving the visual novel even more, a lot of the shock is gone seeing as I know exactly what will happen. The characterization is still very enjoyable though.

The console arcs still have the element of surprise though, so I’m enjoying the fuck out of those.

No need to use spoilers here
>Rika has also gone through enough loops to memorize the triggers for her friends going crazy, but she still can't stop them? For Onikakushi-like worlds, it should have been easy considering her connections with the clinic, just have them call in K1 for a shot by telling them he's infected.
In Onikakushi-hen Rika called the clinic and Yamainu went after him, but it was too late, K1 got away from them after killing Mion and Rena. You should remember the white van following him. Anyway, Rika herself also agreed that she wasn't trying hard enough in all worlds.
>Why was Mion so quick to confess to Keiichi that her family didn't have anything to do with the mysterious murders in Tsumihoroboshi, but she doesn't even try explaining that/reasoning with Shion in Meakashi until the very end?
Mion didn't really had a chance to explain herself until Shion went crazy, she also was keeping the legend of omnipotent Sonozakis alive as a family head. Why she wasn't trying to talk with Shion immediately after becoming a hostage is a good question, maybe I need to reread this part.
>Why does Shion die in the credits of Tatarigoroshi? Was it just supposed to throw you off despite having no real relation to anything?
She killed herself under the influence of Hinamizawa Syndrom shortly after the tragedy iirc.

For everything else: read secret ending of Matsuribayashi-hen, read Saikoroshi-hen, read Umineko and you will understand a lot more.
>Also, Mion was the cutest.

Before she gets mindbroken, it seems like she's playing dumb, and even tells Shion that Satoshi is probably at the bottom of the well.
Mions knows that her family is capable of doing horrible things. She denied it at the end because she trusted her grandma, but deep down she couldn't be 100% certain that they didn't kill Satoshi.

When she told K1 the truth in the sixth arc, she was just denying Rena's ridiculous parasite conspiracy. But she was also lying out of her ass when she said that the Sonozakis are not dangerous people. She believes they might be responsible for some shit, but she lies to avoid scaring K1. That's exactly what she did in the first arc.

In Onikakushi and Tatarigoroshi, he gets fucked by HS, so that's understandable. But he doesn't really do anything in Wata/Meakashi, doesn't appear in Himatsubushi, is mostly irrelevant in Matsuribayashi, and really only stands out in Minagoroshi/the end of Tsumihoroboshi, not to mention he still makes several dumbshit decisions in the latter. He's referred to as intelligent, but that aspect tends to be overshadowed by Mion and Rena.

No, it's completely redone by some Russian dude. It's ok, but many important lines are translated in a way that makes them sound cringy. Battler's catchphrase sounds fucking retarded now. And Beatrice keep saying "fuck" or "fucking" all the time, which doesn't fit her character and ends up being annoying/cringeworthy because she says it so much. Also, the Rokkenjima Suspicion is translated as Rokkenjimagate.

Besides the shitty translation, some scenes are ruined because they have no music and the fucking mouths of the characters move every time they speak. It's really stupid.

I'm so glad I enjoy the original version and was able to experience Umineko the way Ryukishi intended. It sucks when I'm looking forward to hearing a let's player's opinion about some scenes and I keep noticing how PS3-related issues make the experience slightly worse for them.

Original everything. Trust me. After you finish the whole thing, you'll undertand why it was a good idea and how foolish the PS3 apologists are.

This is a sound novel. Your are not supposed to be looking at pretty sprites and detailed backgrounds. They are only there for you to occasionally glance at them and understand the mood of the characters and the general atmosphere of the scene. The original sprites and backgrounds do that job A LOT better, are more charming and there is nothing distracting or "off" about them. The PS3 assets are plagued by weird pespectives, unsubtle facial expressions that sometimes fail to convey they emotion they are supposed to (especially in Higurashi) and feel really empty and lazy (i.e. Rosa's phone). The extra detail actively detracts from the experience and makes it obvious that the backgrounds are being recycled for completely different places.

Not only are they artistically bankrupt, they just don't work at all for the story. They look awkward, empty, distracting, bland, soulless and fail to achieve what a background is supposed to achieve. They wouldn't be so bad in a generic dating sim, but they just don't work in Higurashi. And the fact that a better alternative exists only makes them worse. That's why it baffles me that people actually patch the game to get rid of the original backgrouds and replace them with "less offensive" versions with no personality.

>> No.18818538

Umineko is a novel. You are not supposed to be looking at the pretty sprites. The originals are expressive and improve the experience, but they never distract you from the narration or prevent you from imagining the scene yourself. That's where the PS3 sprites and backgrounds fail and feel awkward.

The voice acting is great, but I still think the experience is better, more dinamic and less cringy if you imagine the voices in your head. There is nothing more awkward than having a super fast battle slowed down by voice acting. Or accidentally clicking and interrupting the voice acting. Or having the music loop 5 times in a row because the voice acting made the scene take way longer than it should.

The original novel doesn't have any of those problems and the whole aesthetic is much more charming and interesting to look at. The updated sprites and backgrounds look nice, but they feel sterile, boring and artificial compared to the originals. I'm not saying they are shit, but I think they are worse.

Also, Ryukishi often uses vague facial expressions that convey different emotions depending on the context. Only the original sprites do this well. The updated versions lose that subtlety and look awkward at times. It's very noticeable in Higurashi.

There's something about Ryukishi's deformed sprites and the blurred real life backgrounds that make his novels feel even more immersive. It's like your mind just accepts that bizarre-looking world and gets lost in it more easily.

It's also a very unique art style that stands out and makes you feel happy when you see it. The PS2 artwork is much more generic. And the backgrounds are awesome. Since they are photographs, they feel very realistic, but the blurring gives them a surreal vibe that matches perfectly with the character models and the story itself. It makes them feel separated somehow, so you never find a scene ridiculous because of the perspective.

This is very apparent in Higanbana. It just wouldn't be the same with generic anime designs and sterile drawn backgrounds.

Some other examples would be the phone and the super detailed 3D chain in Umineko. Or the super detailed ash tray in Higurashi. They feel extremely generic somehow, there's nothing unique about them. But since they are so detailed, you can't help but notice that Rosa's phone is the same as the one in the mansion, and the same as every other phone that appears in the story. Even the generic picture of a plant that sits next to the phone is the same every time a phone appears. It's obvious that it's just a recycled background and it just takes you out of the story. It looks silly.

In the original novels, you can see the backgrounds but you can't really see any details. Things like phones or ash trays don't stand out so much, it's not as immediately obvious that this phone is exactly the same as the one you saw in a completely different location. It's blurry, you just know that it's a phone and nothing more. It simply conveys the idea of a phone. Same with Hinamizawa and Rokkenjima. The detailed drawn backgrounds in the re-releases make these places feel less realistic and give us too much detail, leaving no room for the imagination. The image is too clean and you can easily see how boring and empty everything looks. And the perspectives look strange sometimes because there isn't a separation between the realistic backgrounds and cartoony sprites. The PS3 version lacks that separation and makes it harder to use your imagination. The sprites look like they belong in that world and the whole perspective makes everything look off.

The blurry photographs are more artistic, even if they didn't take too much effort to create. They are just very interesting to look at. There is more to art than technical detail, don't be a dumb goat. The whole experience is better and more cohesive without any patches.

Oh, and the CGs make some scenes feel really cheesy and "tryhard". Some even look ridiculous and over the top. Not a fan.

I'm not saying that nobody should be allowed to like the updated versions. I don't give a shit about what people like or dislike. I just think it's a shame that new players will have a slightly worse experience when they could have just played the original. You can't deny that some parts have problems, sound cringy, take too long or just look awkward. Take a look at Narnith's EP1-4 videos. The game looks awkward as shit in general and I can't help but cringe the whole time. That could have been avoided.

I really enjoy the original backgrounds. They feel nostalgic for some reason, probably because they are real pictures taken in the real life Hinamizawa around the time Higurashi was released. It's been 15 years already!

I don't know, they just look very artistic, even though they are just real pictures with a couple of filters. They feel as if there's something interesting hidden somewhere in that blur, random details of real life captured by the camera, something that wouldn't appear in a drawn background unless the artist intended it and actually drew it. I think organic is the word I'm looking for.

About the voices... I have a huge problem with the voice of the man from 19 years ago.

In the original, voiceless novel, Natsuhi said that the man's voice sounded a bit ambiguous, implying that it was Yasu's voice. He was trying really hard to sound like a pissed off 19 year old guy seeking revenge, saying very creepy and threatening stuff, but his voice still sounded like a middle schooler's because he lost his balls.

The voice patch makes him sound almost exactly like Battler. It's very obviously the same voice actor. It makes a lot of sense, because Battler was an accomplice in EP5 (that regretted it later on and tried to defend Natsuhi). Yasu probably had him read a script during the phone calls. It makes Meta-Battler's counter-theory about Battler being the baby even more credible.

But I don't like how it completely contradicts the text saying that the voice sounds ambiguous and removes the emotional impact of an extremely bitter Yasu calling Natsuhi himself and saying all those mean things.

I think it's pretty obvious that the person playing the man from 19 years ago during the first phone call (the one before the conference) was supposed to be Yasu. Natsuhi's description of the voice only makes sense if it's Yasu. The man is played by Battler in all the other phone calls, because the voice from that point on is described as unambiguously male and he aggresively threatens Natsuhi. On the day of the conference, Battler has already been bribed to cooperate.

That's why I really dislike the fact that Daisuke Ono plays the dude during the first phone call, completely contradicting Natsuhi's description of the voice and creating a weird plot hole. It clearly goes against what Ryukishi intended. It's a fuck up on their part.

I wouldn't dislike the Alchemist sprites so much if they didn't look so shiny, 3D-ish and toy-like. It's just too generic.

Compare them to the beautiful, flat, manga-like 2D sprites in Subahibi. Was it really so hard to draw them like that? They would be much more aesthetically pleasing and Alchemist wouldn't have had to spent so much money on the project. It was too fancy and ended up bankrupting them, but it was all for nothing since they look like crap.

The creepy guy on the phone, Zepar and Furfur and ErrorShannon were very obviously written without voice acting in mind. Ryukishi never intended to give them a voice because those characters rely on the fact that we are simply reading their words.

Hell, the colored text itself uses that same logic. You can't speak in colors in real life, but Beatrice DOES speak in red and Battler is forced to acknowledge that absurdity. Because it's text. I love how the story breaks the fourth wall there.

>> No.18818755

>>18818593
That's why Umineko loses something when you add voices. Some elements of the story rely on the fact that you are READING a voiceless sound novel. Same reason why an anime adaptation would never work at all. Umineko relies on narration and text, you can't just translate that shit to a visual medium.

The text describes Shannon and Will's conversation as normal. She is supposed to sound normal. No robot voices or sound distortions. AND YET, there is a weird, incomprehensible, tense atmosphere as they talk.

This is something that can only be achieved with text and text alone. You have to imagine what that feeling would be like, helped by the wEIRd TeXT.

Once you add voices, they fill in the blanks and prevent you from imagining that indescribable feeling described in the narration. You can actually HEAR Shannon's voice. You can't imagine the sound yourself. And she sounds perfectly normal. It's a let down. But if she sounded like a robot, it would be a let down too.

It only works without voices, because your mind is confused and can't quite imagine what the narration is describing.

It's like the Nothing in the shitty Neverending Story movie. It's a concept that gets ruined once you try to show it visually.

I really hate Umineko and Higurashi with textboxes patched in. There is a reason why the author decided to have walls of text instead. He only approved of the Alchemist remake to get money and hopefully make his stuff popular with the normies.

Higurashi and Umineko are not regular visual novels. Hell, they aren't even considered "visual" novels by the author. The sounds, the music and the text are the most important parts. The visuals are only there to complement everything else, and they do a really good job.

What I'm trying to say is that relegating the text (which was intended to appear as a WALL in a certain way) to a tiny textbox with the character's name in one corner like in a normal visual novel is a mistake.

KEY's Kanon has beautiful visuals and they are one of the most important elements of the novel. And most of the text is dialogue between the main character and the girls he can end up dating, so it makes sense to put the text in a rectangular box and show the speaker's name. Otherwise, it would obscure the visuals. But in the WTC series, you are only meant to look at the visuals for a second to see where the characters are, what emotion they are feeling or who moved their head (signaling who is speaking now). 90% of the time you are reading the text.

Alchemist's changes don't fit his artistic vision at all. I can't believe so many "fans" of Ryukishi consider his original novels "cheap-looking" (when they are anything but that) and would rather experience a commercial, dumbed down version of his novels.

They have no respect for the author and don't trust him to make good decisions regarding the sound, look and feel of his works and how that affects the reader's experience. They take him for a talentless fool.

It's OK if you dislike his art, his photographs or his walls of texts. But at least give the guy's original vision a CHANCE instead of patching the shit out of the novels the moment you decide to read them for the first time. It's an acquired taste and it tastes pretty damn good.

While I've grown to love the art style of Itaru Hinoue in pretty much everything she was ever involved in, this makes a lot of sense. In my experience, ages ago when I first found an interest in reading Key's work, I had a little trouble getting over some resentment. While I did love their trailblazing history and how they shook up a lot of standardized idea, they attracted imitation. There was a period of time where the genre they started was being thrown around without it's soul. Most visual novels started to look like soulless copies of Key. Even the character design paved the way for what became the generic anime art of our time.

My resentment was petty but when I got over it I found a lot to love in this art. But even I understand. My friend who I'm getting into Higurashi was cool with the original art but when I showed him Key art from Clannad and before it he was repulsed, but atleast he was laughing.

on a side note, was anybody intially disappointed with the umineko ending at first, some faggot anon on /v/ spoiled it for me and I kept thinking what a shitty end to a what was so far a good VN, i also considered quitting right then and there but I persisted and now I love the ending and Umineko as a whole.

That movie has a god tier OST. It's just bubble gum pop, but all the songs are so fucking catchy.

The story is also surprisingly dark and serious sometimes. I remember being really scared as a kid when NotBattler got hurt by that crab and looked like a dead fish for the rest of the movie. Or when he unknowingly threw his sister into the sea. Or the villains death, what the hell was that?

It's nothing special objectively speaking, but it's a very memorable movie and I love it. The animation is really good too.

Yeah, I found it sadder than the magic ending (enough that it still deters me from watching the scene). While Ange's resolution was bittersweet, from Battler's perspective, he eternally lost someone he loved enough to spend eternity with in all salient senses. I'm less often in it for the sentimentality, but the scene is just heartbreaking, with him conjuring illusions in futility for a lost love, trying to relive those (ironically) halcyon days of his game with her. What struck me was that, of all the supposed illusions, Beatrice's had no single quotation marks, which are used to denote a quote within a quote.

It still makes me feel pretty bad to read over, though (I just tried to confirm the quotation mark suspicion).

What really struck me about that scene was how it must have paralleled with Ryukishi's real life situation at the time, what with the death of BT and all. I find fascinating the fact that they're talking about a tomato latte, and then immediately afterwards of a dairywoman who says that Pascal failed. Who was Pascal? Who was the dairywoman? Why did Pascal fails? Is the latte connected to the dairywoman? Was the dairywoman Bobelo? Is Bobelo an African dairywoman?

I don't visit R07 thread for months and a da after I post this I got a dream where Lambda ask me "What are you doing?". I was making a game where you can plant player's head in ass. You pull lever and the resulting number shows how long you can plant your face there. If you are not moving might as well lay on asses. The end

Yeah, so his history as a civil servant complemented the grieving he underwent while writing Umineko. He writes very tactfully about the sorts of issues the civil servant may face and, later on, more heavily with pressing on beyond the loss of a loved one. In fact, every character deals thoroughly and intricately with death in Umineko; BT's death must have acted as a defibrillator, galvanizing Ryukishi into emphasizing more so on overcoming death with peerless heartfulness, which is where my main WTC5 concern comes.
I've already shown that, with WTC5, we can expect the return of that exalted philosophical/spiritual profundity, alongside tempered writing, alluring difficulty, sublime atmosphere, a fun story, etc, but, considering the circumstances, I'm unsure he can write another story with as much heart as Umineko. I wouldn't be ashamed (of myself or anyone else) dying with a Umineko magnum opus, and even something only nearly as good would be phenomenal—if not preeminent—in the medium, but Ryukishi set the bar really high for himself, and I don't think anything else he has written stands as formidable competition, not even en masse (it's far more meaningful than this Duncantrice meme makes it out to be, in any case). Well, as long as it's a fun read I don't have anything to really worry about, right?

>>18830881
It's funny that you say that, since most things are pretty easy in hindsight. Have someone try some difficult Raven's matrices and enjoy yourself watching them helplessly writhe and rack their brain to their wit's end before they fold and demand the solution only to befall bathos for a simple permutation. If it's difficult until you understand it, it's always difficult, because the only people who are concerned with the difficulty are the people who still have to defeat it.

I mean, I enjoyed making mine way too much to regret it anyway. Especially putting Kanon as my least favorite human. It's hard to put a least favorite anything because they're all great anyway. My favorite Twilight scene only matters because of my least favorite one, for example (and thereby Featherine's nomination as my least favorite witch), and Legend is still disjunctively excellent.

Oh, I like everyone in the story except like Ootsuki. Really would have favored him without any sort of sprite at all if he was going to end up like that. While Cornelia's at the bottom, I can't help but be compelled by and impressed with the stalwart defense she provides, as a prosaic hymn to willpower, if you will, but I really love most of the cast so it's tough.
