OP here, the other games aren't bad, it's just that their casts tend to have one or two weak links amongst them that stick out like a sore thumb, in comparison, TD has what is easily one of the best cast in the series, even the two least interesting character, Kyouko, is still an incredibly fun character at the very least.
And yes, TD's gameplay is dogshit, but this thread is about the characters.

LoLK has an even better cast. DDC's cast is pretty good too, especially for youkai lovers like me. HSiFS cast isn't as good but we at least got Nemuno and the crazy back dancers out of it.

Doremy was extremely forgettable outside LOL SMUG/Dinosaur until the fighter which got her another boost of popularity but I got a feeling that she's fading away rather quickly.

Of course her being stuck with Sagume really helps keeps her trapped into being tied to that. Sumireko's ties to her but even that it was a blip and a even that quickly died down.

DDC's Cast has a major problem.

The first three characters seemed to blob together with far more synergy with the rest of the cast does.

Stage 4 has Literally Who and Literally Who, that even ZUN threw shade onto how ignorable they are with AFiEU and Raiko just ditching them for the Prismriver sisters.

Personality-wise the Taoists has better composition of characters than EoSD whose popularity relies more on the diverse of the resident's species/role/ethnicity.
The Taoists could go very well together as comedy/SoL material.

You have a wise but kind-of-narcissistic Miko, a hyper but stupidly outdated Futo, straight but hot-tempered Tojiko, annoying and intrusive Seiga and completely braindead Yoshika, and those not counting their unique gimmicks. They are also clearly very close to each other except maybe Seiga and Yoshika but for the former that can be part of her quirk while the latter can be a mascot or passive source of jokes.
Meanwhile, 3 out of 5 SDM characters are stoic-kind of characters that has to be dumbed down to make interesting/funny interactions, except for Meiling and Flandre and even their personalities are kinda hard to go well with the entire cast, only few. Not to mention their personalities are rather vague.
Their relationships are also often depicted as one-way than spreading evenly. Sakuya is either only cares for Remi or Meiling but rarely both, and usually for each case the other one must be a buttmonkey. Patchouli never cares about anyone except Koa or Remi but even those are kinda rare since people are too busy pairing her with outsider like Marisa. Flandre also only has connection with Remi while fanon has to stretch it to pair her with Meiling.
At least with the Taoists, even if Seiga is distanced from the main 3 it's easy to picture her messing around with them.

That being said, the potential of the Taoists cast is underutilized. For some reason the prominent Taoists artists like to draw battle doujin (Kakao and makuwauri for example) or pairing Miko with Byakuren. The only ones I know who utilized that potential are that one MMDer in Touhousubs and perhaps Fuantei.

Just my opinion, though. Maybe I don't look at/think about SDM much enough, got their personalities too influenced by certain part of fanon or just overall biased/lack insights.

Well, I was indeed talking about how they would do in fandom.

Though speaking about canon it's not too farfetched, either. Miko is the wise one, Futo is the cheerful one, Tojiko is the tough one, Seiga is the sinister one while Yoshika is a zombie. The group is quite diverse personality-wise and makes an interesting group, and a very dynamic one if ZUN is willing to expand on them. ZUN already said Tojiko's tough attitude is a foil to jovial Futo. Meanwhile most SDM cast are stoic types or too vague and so far the relationships between the residents are that of respect.

I appreciate SDM characters individually, canon or fanon, but as a group they don't have good potential interactions other than being loyal to the mistress. Arguably the only interesting thing about SDM cast is the diverse species and ethnicity.
