When a shoji screen goes unrepaired a Mokumokuren can form. Dozens of eyes peering through the holes in the wall, breaking the wall’s boundary between the ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ of a room. From those humble origins, the youkai that would come to be knowing as Yukari Yakumo was formed.

While not as old as youkai like Tewi, Yukari is still old enough to be considered ancient. With her boundary manipulation she managed to evolve much further then the average youkai ever would. And her constant experience with humans kept her young mentally.

Yukari has a burning hatred of the Celestial order. The limits placed on her existence by human belief chafed at her, and the jealous idleness of the Celestials offends her.

She’s been quieter recently because the religious factions are capable of causing enough chaos on their own allowing her to manipulate things for the shadows. Before everyone was lazy so she had to either act directly, or trick the Scarlet Devil Mansion into acting. She’s developed a certain appreciation of Remilia because of that. Remilia’s boredom makes her such a perfect pawn, even though the vampire girl knows she’s being manipulated. It makes Yukari’s life so much easier.

That it covers her frail humanity in the trappings of the God of Hakurei, Youkai Sage, and Invincible Puppet Master is beside the point. It is four thirty in the morning, and I've just woken up in the shower, laying in the tub with a fierce stream of hot water gone cold with time running frigid down my face. I have no idea how long I've been asleep. It doesn't really matter.
Rising, I grab a towel from the pile on the floor, wrapping it around my body with an odd sense of gratitude, and move down the short hallway to my tiny bedroom. Looking around the clothes strewn about the floor, I find a T-shirt and pants I like (or maybe just choose them at random, I'm not really sure anymore…) and shrug them on, tug, zip, button, adjust for comfort. Ha, comfort. Ignoring the insistent tapping from the other side of the cardboard and duct-tape covered window (where my gaze lingers for a moment, but only a moment. I think.) I head into the kitchen for breakfast (soggy cereal with milk grown slightly warm from the broken refrigerator) and a demotivated perusal of the help wanted section of last weeks old newspaper. I used to get the newspaper every morning, searching diligently for a job, a task, anything to get me moving forward and upward, out of this shitty fourteenth floor loft in a slumhouse on the south side of a city that hasn't been worth living in by all accounts since the seventies, but it doesn't really feel worth it anymore. With a sigh, I dump the remaining cereal and set the bowl on the stack of unwashed dishes in the sink. I need to get out of here.

Back down the hall and into my room to grab a jacket (it's freezing in here), and my eyes lock on that sheet of cardboard taped over the window. From behind it, softly, tap, tap, tap. She's still out there. She always is, as soon as it gets dark, until the sun rises, knocking gently on the window, fourteen stories up, hair blowing in the night time breeze, beckoning me to open the window, to let her in. I can change your life, she seems to say, if you'll let me. Shuddering, I look away.

Nate (God I miss that kid) used to tell me that I was depressed, that I was seeing things, that I should get help. Used to, till one day she came knocking on his window too. He called me then, breathless, apologizing for not believing me. He sounded strange on the phone… eager. I never heard from him again. I wonder if he's better off.

When I first came here, it felt like life was amazing, like the world was one big opportunity stretching itself wide in front of me and just waiting for me to take that first step. I'd chosen this apartment, with its window view of the entire, sprawling, electric starscape of the city lit up at night like God's own fallen Christmas tree, just so I could look out and revel in that feeling, in that high. That feeling got me through the first few months.

Gradually, though, the joy faded, and I was left with so many needs, and so many troubles, and never enough money, and so much time to think about it all, and I slipped into the bleak depression I've been in up till now. Then one day, she came.

Back then, I'd been able to sleep at night, every night, regularly, instead of falling into fitful patches of restless slumber at disjointed times, and I'd been asleep when she first showed up. I was awoken by a soft, almost polite knocking, so soft that at first I got up and went to the door, looking out into the silent hallway. When I went to return to bed, I saw her. Standing on nothing, fourteen floors up, her dress blowing in the wind, one hand knocking on the glass like a door, the other waving as I saw her, beckoning, a friendly gesture. I've read stories in my lifetime of creatures and spirits that knock on windows at night, of vampires who can only enter a home if the owner answers the door. I knew (or thought I knew) the risks. I went out into the living room and tossed and turned on the couch, hoping she'd be gone by morning.

And she was, but she was back the next night, and the night after that, and the night after that, knocking, calling silently to me, promising wordlessly that she could change my life, make it better. Eventually, I covered the window, trying to ignore her, hoping normalcy would return, but no. It never did. It never will.

So here I am, looking down, looking away, looking anywhere but at that window, shaking with desperate desire to look out, to open it, to let her in, and knowing with every fiber of my being how desperately wrong it would be. I've held out this long, but as I sink deeper into myself, I know that soon, soon, I'll walk to that window, and with shaking hands I'll tear dow

The sun was very low now, an orange-red eye peeking halfway over the buildings lining the narrow street. Matt stopped, out of breath. As he stood there, hands on his knees, he despaired. I'm very far from home now. And it's nearly dark. And it's cold. I'll never find her like this. I should go home, wait for mom, and ask her what to do. This...this is bad. He stood up straight again, and began to turn around. As he spun, he noticed an old man in a chair on the porch of a nearby house, sitting back and watching the sun set. I...I really should ask him. Even if it is cold. Even if he looks creepy out here all alone with his wrinkly face and his saggy arms and that tube up his nose- ugh. Stop it. Matt steeled himself. He walked over to the porch, and, positioning himself in front of the oldster. "Ex-Excuse me, sir...um...have you seen a...um, a young girl around here? About this high? With short, dark hair and a yellow shirt? She's my sister, and...uh..."
The man leaned forward, his faced coming into the dim light of the sunset. His eyes were vacant and unfocussed. His slow motion was jerkily arrested by the cannula in his nose, and, keeping his blank face pointed at the sky, he pointed across the street. "She...She's over there."
The man's spotty finger was aimed directly at a narrow alley between two buildings across the street.
Oh, God. I don't want to go in there. And this guy doesn't look all there. And it's still dark and cold. The wind was picking up. In torn jeans and a cheap t- shirt, Matt felt nearly naked. But it's my only chance. I've got to do it.
"Er...thanks." The man didn't move. Matt crossed the street. The orange light of sunset was gone. All that was left was the dim light of dusk. It was darkest purple, fading into black.
But then, as he looked down the mouth of the alley, he saw something strange, for just a second. There had been a person there at the place where the alley bent. A tall woman, dressed in an archaic gown of fine pale silk. She had been there for just a moment before she twirled around the corner in a swirl of cloth.
She had been looking at him, with a small smile on her face.
"Wait!" She had to know something about where Amy was. He broke into a run down the alley. The lane took several odd twists and turns, the high brick walls on either side blocking out all but a thin stripe of the purple-tinged sky. He came around a final corner, and stopped.
The woman was sitting there on an antique love-seat. There was a little table and second chair across from her, the finely carved furniture looking entirely wrong sitting on the wet asphalt. She wore a long, conservatively-cut ruffled dress, its pale cream color in sharp contrast with the apron-like purple garment she wore over the dress's front. Her long, blond hair framed a pale, beautiful, fine-featured face that seemed ageless, like a black-and-white photo of a classical actress. Her lips were still curved up in that small, cryptic smile.
Matt had a brief moment of mental lockup. "Wha...whaa...?"
The woman held a heretofore-unseen purple fan up to cover her mouth, long
fingers flicking it open with ease. "Why, hello," she spoke, her voice mature and carefully modulated.
Focus. This is a big city. Weirdoes everywhere. Just ignore it. Focus. "Um, I'm looking for my s-sister. About this high, dark hair, uhh...yellow shirt, er...?
"Oh, I may have seen her. Yes, maybe. But that's such a boooring subject, isn't it? I can tell you're curious about me. It's right there on your face. We'll talk about your sister after you ask your questions, yes?" Holding the fan up again, the woman giggled, the gesture surprisingly girlish in contrast to her dress and bearing. She gestured to the old-looking overstuffed armchair sitting on the opposite side of the table from her.
Matt sat. Just humor her, he told himself. This is your only chance.
"Ah, it's nice to have someone new to talk to," the woman told him, toying
with one of the small red ribbons in her hair. "Do ask away." She's still smiling. This is too weird. "So, er...who are you?"
"Hee hee." She giggled again. "I've been called many names in many languages by many different people," she reminisced, still covering her mouth as she spoke, "and I've forgotten even more names than I remember. Hmmm..." the woman said from behind her fan. "Ah. These are some of my favorites. The Lady in Violet. Gap Woman. Cartographess. The Smuggler of Souls. The Faraway Bride. Travels-by-night."
What the hell? And that fan... "Er, alright...but, my sist-"

Regardless of who came up with this, I really like it. It's almost a little depressing knowing that ZUN will never reveal stuff as interesting as this.

So what DO we know about Yukari?

The oldest known record of a youkai matching her description is found in the first edition of the Gensokyo Chronicle, from 1,200 years ago. She was not referred to as Yakumo Yukari back then, and it is theorized in PMiSS that she picked that name herself at a later time.

It appears that Yukari was already very powerful and influential over 1,000 years ago. Somewhere between 1,000 and 1,200 years ago she rallied countless youkai in an attempt to invade the moon. The invasion attempt was a complete failure in the sense that the Lunarians quickly defeated the youkai army, and forced them to retreat. While the official justification for the invasion was to steal the Lunarians' power source, Yukari is known for her hidden ulterior motives, and bringing them to fruition with far-fetched, convoluted plans. PMiSS theorizes that Yukari never counted on the plan succeeding, and was just trying to teach the youkai a lesson about overstepping their territory, but in CiLR she shows visible embarrassment over her past defeat.

In the same time frame, between 1,000 and 1,200 years ago, Yukari befriended the living human Yuyuko Saigyouji. When Yuyuko eventually took her own life in despair over her own abilities, an unnamed individual used her corpse to seal the Saigyou Ayakashi, stating: "My wish... is that she will never again reincarnate, and never again suffer pain...". Yuyuko's ghost form is still one of Yukari's best friends to this day, but there's something else to this story which I find the most interesting: it shows (if the unnamed individual was indeed her) that Yukari is capable of strong feelings of empathy, an emotion which is not often ascribed to youkai, and in particular not towards humans.

After these event, there are (to my knowledge) no records of Yukari until modern time, around the Meiji Restoration in 1866, when The Sages group >>18539255 was formed which proposed and created The Great Hakurei Barrier. Yukari then took an active role in managing their newly created, walled-off society (eventually offloading much of the work on Ran), while the other sages went into hiding, only to re-appear in the last 10 years. Yukari seems to have a clear, long-term plan in mind for Gensokyo where youkai will once again rule the night all over the world. When the Zashiki-warashi temporarily re-appeared in the outside world, Yukari saw it as a rare opportunity, pic related.

So in conclusion, is it meaningful trying to discern Yukari's "true nature" or her (its?) origins? We know that she is the immensely powerful youkai of boundaries, capable of manipulating any boundary to a great (but not unlimited, the Watatsuki sisters of the moon have specific powers greatly exceeding hers) extent. Yukari's physical manifestation is that of a tall, young, adult, human-lookalike woman with blonde hair. Some youkai are known for being able to choose their own physical appearance, but we don't know if this applies to her. The trend seems to be that the more civilized and/or intelligent youkai have chosen forms that are nearly identical to that of humans.

There are a lot of interesting questions regarding Yukari. But the biggest for me is her ultimate endgame. Does she want to reconquer the outside world? Creating a endless night where Youkai will rule forever? Does she want to free Youkai from being affected by mortal though? Thus allowing them to peacefully coexist even in the outside world. Does she just want to make sure Gensokyo reaches a state where it no longer needs a overseer like her? Thus giving her free reign to fuck about without a care in the world.

If you take the theory that she’s Maribel seriously, that means she wants to preserve fantasy and the youkai; hence her endgame is to probably free them from their dependency on human thought

Yukari's ultimate endgame is anyone's guess at this point, but it is clear as day that she has no intention of letting youkai cower in the reservation known as Gensokyo forever. There's the continuation to the picture i posted here >>18560364 in pic related, where Yukari hints that the current situation is unsustainable. It also hints that there are different factions, perhaps even among the youkai, with different ultimate goals for Gensokyo's future. Kasen is not keen on Yukari's apparent plans for youkai re-emergence, and in a later chapter she makes it very clear that she's not on Yukari's side, perhaps having changed her mind since her sage days.

In the latest WaHH discussion thread, people theorized that Kasen now feels that youkai should just accept their fate as a thing of the past, and simply fade into history along with Gensokyo. This was strengthened by her statement that her loyalty now lies with "the law of heaven", which can be interpreted as "the natural order of things". Maybe this is why Kasen started befriending Reimu and the others, with the explicit goal of taking control over the Hakurei shrine, perhaps to help this process (it does not seem like it was of any help in her search for her missing arm).

However, unless it is a VERY convincing cover-up, Kasen is planning to save herself by becoming a celestial through the hermit route. This would make Kasen look like a huge, selfish hypocrite next to Yukari's caretaker role for all of youkai-kind. However, kasen has taken a liking to humans, and maybe she is even trying to save all of mankind from a much more cruel future at the hands of Yukari, should her plans succeed?

I don't really think that Yakumo Yukari IS Maribel Hearn, but there is clearly a very strong connection between them, we just don't know exactly what it is yet. While many details almost make them seem like the very same person, how and why would Yukari appear as a physically normal (disregarding the crazy boundary-manipulation abilities) human without any of her own memories in the near future?

Maribel states that her linage has been able to see the boundaries between everything since ancient times, but it was only recently that she powered up and became able to manipulate them at will. So far, she has manipulated boundaries for the purpose of transporting herself, and eventually also Renko, through time and space. In PMiSS, a note found several hundred years ago in the bamboo forest, obviously left by Maribel during her explorations, was mentioned. But why would "human Yukari" regain her abilities only now? I'm more inclined to believe that Yukari and Maribel have common ancestry of some sort, perhaps among ancient Shinto gods.

But then we have the eerie similarities. Maribel looks just like Yukari, same hair color and everything. She dresses in the same colors, with a similar albeit less gaudy style, complete with the mob-cap. Maribel's ability seems to be the exact same as Yukari's, although it is still much weaker, and she hasn't explored its full potential yet. Her given name follows a logic very similar to that of Yukari's. In addition, she just happens to be a member of the Secret Sealing Club, with a keen interest in Gensokyo in particular. Conveniently, she also happens to be a foreigner with no relatives living in Japan, and has told Renko very little about her background, but still has a perfect grasp of the Japanese language.

So if they indeed are the same person, in what manner would they even be it, if Maribel is physically still a normal human, has none of Yukari's memories, and only recently gained her powers? If she is a re-incarnation with the same soul (most plausible explanation), that means Yukari would have to pass away (for some reason) relatively soon in the near future, but those things work very differently for youkai and humans. And wouldn't that be unnecessary considering Maribel's lineage, since it implies Yukari isn't the only boundary watcher/manipulator around? Or is it some kind of convoluted, yet unexplained method/relation? There are theories (even in canon) that Yukari is in fact messing around in the outside world all the time she spends sleeping, utilizing dream transportation just like Sumireko, but this method still preserves your entire being, body, abilities, memories and all.

ZUN is actually better at constructing an intriguing narrative than I gave him credit for in my previous post, without giving almost anything away, now that I think about it. I just hope that we get to see the story about his universe going anywhere interesting before he passes away from old age.

I spent 2 hours writing this post, but then accidentally hit Ctrl+W, so I had to write it all from memory again.

An old idea i had is that Yukari's ultimate endgame is to extend the Hakurei barrier around the entirety of the japanese archipelago. But i'll admit, i only have that idea because it sounded cool.

Kasen's ultimate goal, if she even has any, is even more of a mystery. I haven't read WaHH yet, so i honestly can't even guess what it could be.

>I don't really think that Yakumo Yukari IS Maribel Hearn, but there is clearly a very strong connection between them.
I personally like to think Maribel might be Yukari's bastard daughter. The result of her abducting somebody she simply found too intriguing. Since Yukari isn't really the type to raise children. She made sure her daughter was adopted by a well off family, and then largely forgot about her.

Maribel exists in the future and Gensokyo doesn't, unless she decided to timegate Maribel to the future for some reason it makes no sense.
Furthermore the connection between Hearn and Yakumo is that Hearn changed his name to Yakumo, which seems to imply more that she changed her name, thus the reason why nobody knows her true name.

Between her two themes (Necrofantasia and Evening Star) I see them as representative of two halves of her. On one hand she's a force of nature that you don't want to be on the bad side of, that's Necrofantasia. Powerful, relentless, whatever. On the other hand she's whimsical and confusing, and that's Evening Star, with its irregular tempo and slightly discordant feel. Both are appropriate in their own way.
Yukari is the gardener and Gensokyo is the garden. She's not a control-freak in the sense that she likes watching how people will grow when left alone, but she considers certain other people weeds to be removed. Fertilizer and trimming are applied as appropriate. As the metaphor implies, she implicitly thinks of herself as a higher sort of being than everyone else. Flowers are pretty, but they aren't people.
She is the youkai among youkai. Her thought processes may lead her to the right places, but they make no sense to anyone else, except possibly Yuyuko. While to everyone else it seems like she enjoys talking in riddles, she thinks she's being straightforward. Her kind of genius is the kind that causes her to wonder why no one else gets it. Of course, she's gotten used to that kind of reaction over her long life, but she still has no idea what's wrong with everyone else. Everything's so simple, isn't it?
As a consequence of this, she doesn't do things "for the lulz". She does things for very good reasons that make no sense to anyone else. She spends most of her time sleeping, so she has little free time to spare. Everything she does is very important to her, somehow or other. She thinks 3 steps ahead and 5 steps to the left whenever she does anything. Again, this is not due to creativity but rather a certain kind of limitation to her thought processes. She doesn't know how to plan normally.

"Oh shush, there goes the sister talk again. Such subjects are best reserved until one has run out of more interesting topics. Don't you agree?" I do not. But I doubt this weirdo would listen even if I told her that. "Now then, back to my name. Since I have so many, I suppose you could just use the most famous one. Yukari Yakumo"

Sounds vaguely Asian. She doesn't look the part though. "Okay then. Miss Yakumo. Wh-"

"Miss Yukumo?" Again, she giggles. Her mouth still carefully hidden behind her fan. It's really starting to annoy me.

"Okay then, Yukari. What exactly are you doing here?"

"What do you mean?" She asks it like a question. Yet, it's obvious that any confusion is faked.

"Well, why are you sulking around in random alleyways?"

"Alleyway?" She says. The same obviously fake confusion in her voice, but combined with a hint of teasing. "But, this is my home."

"What the hell are y-" Then, I noticed that she was right. Somehow, even though I'm sure I was in a alleyway just a moment ago. I was sitting in a decently sized, well decorated living room. But... how?

Yukari notices my confusion. And even without being able to see her mouth, I could tell she was smiling. This woman is messing with me. But I don't know why, or how. "Is something perhaps amiss?" She asks mockingly.

"I-I don't understand. I'm sure I was in an alleyway just about now."

"Truly? How strange" Her words are dripping with both sarcasm and malice. "I can quite distinctly remember inviting you to my home. You seemed pretty eager about it too, Matt."
"W-What? I did no such thing." I don't think I would even have the confidence to accept such an offer. "A-And how do you know my name?

" I know a few things about you. I find you quite... intriguing, you see."

Has Yukari been... stalking me? That should be creepy. But a woman this beautiful finding me intriguing. It's almost kind of... appealing. She seems to notice my reaction and laughs. "Oh my. Getting excited, aren't we? How wonderful. There is still one question that needs to asked however. And I think you already know which one..." She waves her fan around. Still not revealing her mouth. I Know exactly what she wants to hear. And even though some part of me knows this is a bad idea. Both the subtle promise in her words, and my own growing curiosity means I simply have to ask. "Why are you hiding your mouth?"

She lowers her fan, revealing a mouth filled with sharp canine like teeth. Instantly, something clicks in my head. Her unnaturally perfect appearance. The strange eccentric behavior. My little sister disappearing. Those strange eyes. Yukari Yakumo... isn't human. "W-WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU!"

A strange, inhuman smile creeps on her face. "That too is a question with many answers. Youkai would be the most accurate. But considering your ethnicity and home country. I think "Demon" or "Monster" might be more understandable."

This... isn't happening. This is all just some insane dream. "D-Don't lie to me. Demons and monsters aren't real."

Yukari gives me a peculiar look. Excitement gleaming in her eyes, her grin large and toothy. She's clearly having the time of her life. "Oh, Is that so? Why, I never knew seventeen-year-old boys decided what is and isn't real. Perhaps you should tell your little sister that. She seemed quite excited to meet a real monster."

Oh no. "A-Amy? W-What have you done with her."

A strange black tear appears before Yukari, filled to the brink with inhuman looking eyes. It's quite the horrifying sight. Yukari however, puts her hand into it. And pulls out a small girl with black hair, and a yellow shirt. Her eyes closed. "Amy... H-Have you killed her?"

"Oh no, I simply put her into a magical coma. The girl is still quite alive." She gives me a particularly sadistic smile. "For now."

That comment was the last straw. I leaped at her and punched her in the faced. At least, that's what I wanted to do. Yet for some reason, I can't. And I don't mean I tried and failed. I flat out can't get my body to do what I want. I can't even stand up. Yukari's doing, I imagine. "Oh my, such violent desires. You have quite the big brother instinct, don't you?" She says mockingly. "It always seems cruel to tell you I intend to eat your precious little sister."

"E-Eat? Y-You can't be serious?"

She shrugs. "I am. Like I said, I'm a Youkai. Eating humans is normal for my kind. Even an adorable little girl like this." She pinches my sister's cheeks. "I won't kill her right away though. I intend to fatten her up a bit first. Like I do with most children."

This... can't be happening. I can't just sit here, utterly powerless. While this horrible woman plans to eat Amy. There has to be something I can do. Some way I can at least save my sister. "...Yukari. I-I want to make a deal."

She looks surprised. Genuinely, this time. "A deal? How interesting, but what could you possible offer her."

"I want to exchange my life for my sisters. Eat me, instead of her. I'm the reason why she got lost. So, it's only fair..." I can't believe im seriously doing this. But, It's the only thing I can do.

Again, Yukari looked genuinely surprised. "Oh my, how noble of you. I never expected you cared enough about your sister that you would sacrifice yourself. It's almost enough to bring a tear to my eye." She sounds genuinely. Is this going to work?" I'm afraid however, that it simply won't do."

No. It isn't going to. "But why? It's a fair trade, isn't it?"

"Perhaps normally. I might have even agreed to it. But you don't realize your situation. You have nothing to give me. Because the very moment I managed to capture you, your life became forfeit." Oh god. I didn't even think about that. "Don't you understand? You already belong to me."

"N-No... This can't be happening..."

"I'm afraid, my dear Matt, that it is. You need not worry though. You won't be joining your sister for a long time. A cute boy like you is something I have many... uses for." Her voice starts to become sultry. "Who knows. You might even enjoy some of those uses." Is this woman seriously insinuating that she's going to...?

"Y-You... You... Crazy bitch."

My comment only seems to increase her amusement. "Oh my, such impolite language. That's something we will have to take care of eventually. But for now, I think it's time for you to sleep. Can't very well have you around while I'm preparing little Amy here for her big day." She waves her hand. And I can feel myself starting to get tired. "Still, if you have any more questions. Now would be the time to ask them."

"Why... Why are you doing this?"

She laughs, and then looks me in the eyes. A sadistic smile on her. "The question isn't why, Matt. It's why not? If you haven't noticed already, there's nothing you can do to escape. I made sure of that. So, like a cat that managed to catch a mouse. I like to play a bit with my prey. I'm sure you can understand. "Why... why is this happening to me? "Now then, it's time for you to sleep. Believe me, you're going to need the rest. After all, when you wake up we're going to have a lot of fun together."

With those words still ringing in my ears, and the last bits of my consciousness fading. I realize that whatever future I might have had is gone. And that what's going to replace it, won't be very long.

Considering we know time slipping can happen, specifically to HER, how she's becoming youkai-like or at least super-powered, and the blunt Hearn -> Yakumo, finally coupled with "we know Yukari had a name change a long time ago", this has always struck me less as a theory, and more as an unstated fact. I agree that some Youkai might be good mothers. (Satori would be really weird though). I think that most magicians could raise a child just fine. And Kitsune's like Ran are great mothers even in the original myths.

But your average UristMcYoukai probably wouldn't do very well. I doubt most of them even have maternal instinct. And even if the child reaches adulthood, there is still the issue that they can't fit into either Youkai or human society.

It would be pretty funny/cute to have a human who lived among youkai society and constantly got bullied in a cute way
>"I-i'm a youkai at heart..!! Stop calling me a w-weak human!! I'll be strong like mommy!"
>"No..! D-don't drag me to the human village, they're stinky!!"
>"I don't want to eat rice!! I want human flesh like daddy eats!!"
>"S-stop trying to scare me!! I'm a fearless almighty youkai!!"

The bullying potential would be amazing.

Most likely they'd just turn into a youkai, though. Hanging around them, absorbing their magic, drinking their breast milk, and of course, being fed human. If not from any of these(feeding human would surely work though) they could just study magic or find some other way to turn, of which I'm sure are many.

If the kids Youkai parents feed him human flesh, then he is probably going to turn before long. But i'm not sure if they actually would. Youkai might not have a problem with eating humans, but some at least do seem to think cannibalism is wrong.

Studying magic is a option. But most other ways of becoming a Youkai are... very messed up. And should be avoided if possible.
