I know the basics, but now it feels like every game I play is entirely based on luck. I'll either do fine or everything goes completely tits up, pic related.

It looks like you need to work on your defensive game. Google riichi mahjong defense and read up.
You may have just gotten really unlucky and either not had any safe tiles or just didn't think your opponents were as far along as they were, but if this happens consistently, you probably need to work on your defense.

>> No.17975678

>>17975582
there's no magic formula as far as getting better. the game does have a very real luck factor that cant be ignored, but how you manage that aspect is how you develop skill.

efficient discard choices, good push/fold judgement, risk management, reading discards piles, these are all things you will develop as you play.

dont give up!

If you don't know what furiten is, or how to use it to your advantage, learn it.
If you don't know what suji is, learn it.
If you don't fold hands you can't win, you need to start doing that. If you don't know how to fold in mahjong, learn it.

Those are the three defensive techniques that everyone uses, from the intermediate players all the way up to the pros.

I'd argue that making pinfu is essential for basic mahjong gameplay.

It teaches you about difference between sequence and meld. It shows you the most optimum way to make hand (3 blocks and 1 pair, 2-sided wait for the 4th block). It tells you difference between number tiles and honor tiles, and forces you to know your round/seat wind.

The requirements are overwhelming for beginners, but once you understand that yaku, you will quickly realize why pinfu is the most common yaku in riichi mahjong (outside of yakuhai and riichi itself).

It's a dumb thing, but sometimes I wonder if the position of the tiles help with certain waits. Whenever I go on a suji trap but someone calls the tile that sets the trap, I always wonder if the others will forget about that tile, making the trap less useful. Likewise, when the tiles in your discards are lined up, like going for a 4s wait but having the 1 and 7s lined up, I wonder if that makes people pay more attention to those tiles, making the trap mure useful.

It's probably a really dumb thing to worry about.

My love of card games has finally driven me to learn mahjong. After a week or so I don't feel quite as pressured from the timer on Tenhou, though it still causes me to make mistakes sometimes.

The more I look at this round, the more I'm baffled by how lucky I got. Everything lined up just right.

If I hadn't called that 7s pon, I'd have drawn the 2m and dealt into a dealer haneman right into last place. If the dealer hadn't dropped the 6p the shimocha would have got a tsumo that would leave the toimen in first place. And if the shimocha hadn't called riichi I wouldn't have had enough points to make the gyakuten. Got way too lucky there.

Then again, it's my first 1st place in 17 games.

The elephant is of course, ooishi isn't actually in furiten. Since ooishi discards after kei's 6p, akasaka's 6p could still be ronned off.

When they pulled a suucha riichi, I started considering the possibility of chombo riichi by kei to end the game. If they don't check tenpai, suucha riichi aborts the game and if they do check, what you would want is either akasaka to be the dealer so he gets paid more or for kei to be dealer so the point advantage is maintained. I can't see the points for Rena and ooishi so I did not consider a case where they're dealer. Hence I started counting tiles to figure out the dealer.
E1 had the wall broken in front of kei, seven tiles from the right. If using a single roll to decide the wall break, this means Rena is first dealer. This means ooishi is last dealer so trying to end the game with chombo isn't a guaranteed victory. However, E4 has 7 tiles in front of kei and 7:08 even blatantly shows a roll of 8 on screen with a 7 tile break. Whether they use 2 rolls or 1 roll to decide the wall break, the walls are wrong. If kei had 8 tiles in front of him, it would be perfect.(rena is first dealer, oiishi is last and the tile break is correct). It's a lot of stuff to look at and I might be wrong somewhere but that's what I figured.

Keep in mind that all those mahjong rules apply not just for you, but for other 3 players too. If you discard 3pin, you can't win from other players' 3pin discard. In the same way, if one opponent discards 3pin, he can't win using your 3pin discard, so that tile is safe for you to throw away.

At that point, you don't call riichi to win, you call riichi to make others fold and stop a dealer from getting renchan or end the game. It'll all come down to how badly you need to end the game in a draw with only you in tenpai.

Trying to get pinfu is by far the best option here. You need the points and it's too late in the game to be likely to have better chances, you'd be one tile away from a far better tenpai and it's early enough to be reasonably safe and allow for other options.

Hi. New player here. Well at least new to playing online. I've been playing on 天鳳 for a little while and I've noticed that the game goes very fast, except when someone is given the opportunity to pon/chi. If the guy before me plays a 一万, there is sometimes a delay before I draw which basically tells me that there are pretty much no more 一万s left in the game. Isn't this an unfair advantage? Are there any servers that don't do this?

>> No.18054166

What?
Play more and you'll get used to it. You will only need those seconds on very critical time, like deciding between push or fold, or choosing different waits. For the rest, you can even decide what your action in next turn before you draw your tile. Some players are playing with 3+5 seconds per turn just fine.
