sorry for taking a long time to respond anon.
I actually got a response from the original owner sa few days ago, however her answer was that she got it off an auction. I waited a few days more after contacting another person selling the same person, only for him to ignore me. There really aren't hints about its origin on the included materials. Classical Japanese mahjong has a more equal balance of luck and skill. Some people in Japan still play it, which is kind of cool, but it's nowhere near as popular as riichi.

Modern Japanese mahjong really dials up the luck factor because it was popularized by mobsters and professional gamblers. With the proliferation of dora and the overwhelming emphasis on concealed hands, it's not hard to see how the rules were designed to make it easier and more profitable to cheat.

サシウマ is gold-betting game. It's an one-hand game and your gain/loss is based on how big your winning hand is. It's the most all-or-nothing mode ever, the rage fuel is much worse than anything Tenhou has ever given.
The rest should be pretty clear. Online, play with friends, tournaments.

Gold and gems are for character rolling. I don't know how you can get free gems, but you can get gold from that sashiuma mode match.

Also, in sashiuma mode, you can pick your 'combi / friend'. It doesn't do much, but it can make hand and ron opponent. If you use them more, it can work better against riichi or dama hand. You use combi point (CP) to buy better combi.

1chance for 78 and 1chance for shanpon, 2chance tanki. It's not that dangerous. Also he sees a bunch of dora and has a bunch himself, most of the hands he deals in are not too expensive plus a chance to increase the lead. 9m isn't that bad an option. Now, do you think he benefitted or didn't benefit from dealing in riichi nomi and advancing the game?

From a tile development perspective what's worse (as in what do you get rid of first): otakaze or redundant tiles (such as having a 1 when you have a 4 or 8 when you have a 5)?

>> No.17765503

>>17764088
If you keep an otakaze, it can help form the head of a pinfu and stop others from getting their winds while the 1 doesn't add any urekire so I say to throw the 1 first. I also think an otakaze is better as a safe tile.

What I find more interesting rather is how to deal with 258. Should you break it into 25 58 or keep all 3? I always keep all 3 for as long as possible but maybe someone else has thoughts on it.

Those aren't blocks at all. You have 3 isolated blocks of size 1. You will want to cut the 2 or 8 immediately most of the time, and probably dump the other the next turn.

Yeah, it's not really the kind of game you can play every single day for a rank like Tenhou unless you're rich.

I've been playing SEGA MJ for a while now and I mostly play a few times during the week when the daily login bonus is a free-play ticket (usually this is around 2 or 3 days a week, if there's an event it is usually more). If you're a combination of good and lucky, you can make these tickets run pretty far, because placing first means you don't have to spend it. I have a store of around 2500 chips that has never really been lower than that, because if you burn them all playing events, and actually place decently in the event, you usually make what you spent back after the event is over as prize money, if not make a little profit.

So I recommend saving up through the free matches, and play a lot of games during the events (which also gives you free goodies like backgrounds and stuff usually).

Also, it should usually accept gaijin money. A friend was able to pay with Bank of America debit card, and another from some russian bank. Maybe it doesn't like your bank?

People rarely download software to play singleplayer mahjong which explains both your difficulty in finding a proper torrent and seeder issue. People learning how to play get recommended the gamedesign flash game. You're not going to play it anymore once you move on to multiplayer so don't mind the graphics.
After the flash game loads, scroll down to view the cheat sheet.

Read the new player links in the pastebin if you haven't already. Google anything you don't understand. If that doesn't work then ask here.
Alternatively, you could manually work out the mahjong rules on your own and become the next Akagi.

here's a few tips for you:
first of all, no one is going to give you shit for being unfamiliar with live play unless it's some kind of high-tension gambling den. clubs are way more friendly.

watch some youtubes on setting up walls and breaking it. ultimately you're going to be assisted by other players but it doesnt hurt to practice the dice throw resilts, especially if you own tiles.

I dont know if you'll be playing on auto tables or not but always push your wall forward once build. again, youtube is your friend.

as far as actual play is concerned, you'll feel pressured to match the speed of other players, try not let this push you into making mistakes. unlke tenhou there's no timer limiting the time you spend deciding your discards, but if you're going to spend some time thinking it's customary to sive a quick "sorry" to the other players out of courtesy.

unlike tenhou there will be no prompt/ pause when you can call chi/pon/ron so know ahead of time what your plans are and be ready to call once you've decided to.

ultimately stay out of your own head and you'll find live play opens up a whole new dimension to the game.

oh, and remember your poker face

-take care of the tiles, always keep them on top of table and don't slam them.

it really depends on your placement and the round. if you're in the lead by a smaller margin, go for the quick win. If you're in the lead by a large margin then go for it. the opposite is true if you're last. if you're last by a large margin, go for the yakuman. otherwise work your way back up in safe strikes.

this is also affected by the round number. the later in the game you are the more you need that big hit. the one exception would be if you're in the lead by a small margin then you need to end the game asap or risk getting overtaken.

After learning how tenhou works (or so I think) I don't understand why anyone above 1kyu would ever play in ippan.

Am I correct that it's easier to get points but also easier to get your rate gangraped? Why would anyone prioritize points over rate?

I saw tons of 2 and 3-dans when I was in ippan

They think, that it is easier to win in ippan, due to easier competition. Little do they know, all sorts of shit happen in there.

>> No.17814172

>>17813858
Rating is based on the other players' rank so a shinjin beating houou players would have a huge jump in R while a 3dan trashing kyuukyuus would get barely anything. If the 3dan slips up just once and gets trashed by beginner's luck, their R will take a hit so you're right that your rate gets gangraped in ippan.

Some people are too big of a wuss to put their points on the line. They don't believe in themselves and think that they suck so they only care about points then whine when they can't meet the rating requirement for tokujou.

It's still not really worth it I think. The riichi just signaled the toimen and kamicha to go defense against a hand that can win dama for either just short of mangan or yakuman in the best case scenario, while also taking away the ability to defend and switch up the wait. I don't really think the extra few thousand points and potential bump up to a haneman (that isn't even really needed considering the lead) for a few extra thousand more really justifies lowering one's chance of winning, especially considering he was sitting east and he already had a mangan lead on everyone.

It would make the game extremely boring. Almost all of the doki doki moments in a game for me are the ippatsu, kan dora and ura dora draws, I don't think I would be able to handle an endless string of mentanpins and tanyao dora; it would probably bore me to death.
