Not sure about anyone else but I think Kanae Itou might be richer than most people may think. She's been in the Pretty Rhythm+PriPara franchise since 2011, did Shugo Chara for a few years, and was part of some of Aikatsu. Children shows pay very well. Not only that but she always lands getting jobs on series that have multiple sequels (Railgun, Dynasty Warriors, Prism Illya, SAO, TLR, Queen's Blade etc.), always has events, has multiple albums, been traveling the world (I'm sure this pays a good amount), and I'm sure some of her series has pachinko games.

Seiyuu casting can differ depending on ‘who the series is being made for’. For example, if the shows is targeting a male audience and there are plans to hold events featuring female idol seiyuu, [we would] get people who look cute and can shine on stage; obviously they’d be good at singing and talking even if their acting is a little raw; the aim would be to secure those who can fit all the events into their schedule – that’s the priority from a business point-of-view. If it’s a show targeting females we’ll try to assemble a cast of popular male seiyuu while for kids’ shows, seiyuu branding is unnecessary so we’ll seek cheery character actors to match the series… those are some of the ways we select seiyuu based on the individual title.

In the past we used to get a 100 or more people into the studio and run auditions for a week but we’re doing a lot less of that nowadays. ‘cos if you had to get the director to sit in for 1 week of auditions, the animation process would screech to a halt in the meantime (laughs). The concept of "Idol-seiyuu" which was born in the 90s is now bigger than ever, for better or for worst, but it seems that seems to be the focus of the seiyuu industry right now. At the same time, what's expected of someone working as a seiyuu is different now as well. To be more like an idol, to be better looking, to know how to sing and dance, and you have to be great at talking and variety too. If you don't have all those qualities, then you're not likely to debut at all. If you're over a certain age, then you're also bound to get replaced by someone younger soon too. Since lots of works are now filled with young rookies, as a new seiyuu you don't have many senpai to learn from, and the turn-over risk is very high. I think that's a sad thing. But in any industry can be the same environment of competitiveness, so the people who do stay can say they are truly talented and worked hard to get there. In that sense, it's not all bad.

Anyone else notice too many series playing it safe with seiyuu choice?
Looking at choices from 2010-2014 compared to now there's a lot more choosing popular or shilled seiyuu seemingly out of laziness/etc
It becomes more apparent looking at choices from the 2000s also
Though I do notice some newbies get decent roles every once and a while (outside of generic first role stuff)
