Aunn was a mistake

It's nice to see Aunn as a member of the shrine like Shinmyoumaru was. I hope she sticks around, she's really growing on me.
Also, I really dig Azuma's depictions of the new characters. I said it in the pre translation thread, but they look all the more amazing in proper scans.

Aunn is definitely my favorite new character. I love how happy she is, and how dedicated she is to Reimu. I think someone fully supporting and cheering on Reimu is a nice change of pace to the way she is usually treated, especially in a manga where Kasen is nagging constantly. Reimu generally does need a kick in the ass because she's so lazy (which I honestly love), but it's adorable to see someone idolize her so much. I really hope she sticks around like Suika and Shinmyoumaru did.

I think one of the most interesting things about this chapter is that we have confirmation that every route in HSiFS is canon. Reimu, Marisa, and Aya all speak about their routes and fighting Okina explicitly, and Tanned Cirno pops up more than once. iirc this is not the first time all routes in a game are canon, but it's still kind of neat since I think it's generally accepted that Reimu's route in almost all of the games is the canon one (though Marisa is canon in UFO or something? I can't remember)

Also Kasen is totally bullshitting when talking to Aya. We as players know why Okina did what she did, she wanted to find a suitable proxy for her plans, and settled on Marisa. "Warning the Tengu" might have been a side effect but she didn't do it just for that. Kasen acting like the Tengu are trying to control Gensokyo is a big reveal is retarded; we already know every faction that exists in Touhou is vying for control of human faith and influence. For fucks sake, we just spent a ton of time on the Kappa/Tengu/Moriya alliance finishing the ropeway and gathering a massive upswing in faith. Kasen acting like it's a big dramatic reveal and Aya playing dumb just seem silly when it's been explained more than once and across multiple different manga that groups in Gensokyo are all vying for control.

She obviously DOES have insight on Okina because she, Yukari, and Okina are three of the Gensokyo sages, but I think she's trying to threaten Aya more than what is actually happening. Of course, if the Tengu do make a significant move, all three sages + Reimu and Marisa would obviously move to stop them. But I don't think this incident is revolving around "teaching the youkai a lesson" or something.

So Okina came to the tea party just to flex her power level and ruin Reimu's mood, huh? And she didn't take the dancers with her so they can't have fun. What a pleasant person.

I believe it was talked about in FS that if a leader rose up among the humans, it would lead to them defying the laws of nature. Which was said to be a bad thing. The tengu are a society with a leader. Are they currently in the process of meddling with the natural order of things, just as Kasen suspects?

I mean Aya's route in HSiFS in the later part of the game took a weird tone shift in the language compared to the other routes after she learns of Okina and when she challenges her.

How often do you see any Touhou speak like that in the whole series? It kind of shows how serious Aya thought the incident was that she didn't relax at all until after winning.

To sum it up, a all powerful god who is directly antagonistic to your entire race suddenly declares they exist and have the same intentions. You then discover the friendly Hermit you speak to every day is good buddies with said god. Who wouldn't get suspicious and suddenly feel a bit awkward.

It seems more like all build up for another story where we maybe finally we learn more about Tenma who is weirdly still one of the biggest mysteries of the series.

I don' know. I'm enjoying Okina much more than Yukari. At least she's very upfront that she's an attention whore and likes to show off. Yukari is all about that mysterious vibe that really goes nowhere. Although, I wish Okina was nicer. She's too much like Yukari like you said.

On another note, I'm glad that the "strongest" (don't be triggered nerds) 2hu is the silly Hecatia. As much as I like Okina's smug face, I find powerful characters with nice and friendly personalities to be more immediately likeable.

Reimu and Marisa are obvious choices, they need to be there.
But Cirno? Aya? They make no sense. They defy every convention that ZUN had set for Windows era protagonists. He has followed a fairly strict formula for mainline Windows protags. They are all generally

The only true exception to that second rule, before now, had been the IN youkai teammates (who are latched on to main protags so that really doesn't count) and Reisen, who comes close enough in the vague nature of moon rabbits.
Now, why would ZUN suddenly change this? I think it was for storytelling considerations. Think about it, if the last two pcs had been, say, Youmu and Sakuya, suddenly we have this situation where 3 protags could qualify as Okina's new helpers. So in changing the protags to characters that don't fall under Okina's requirements, ZUN is placing a greater degree of importance on the only remaining (non-Hakurei) human, Marisa.
And then he shits this up and makes Reimu the canon protag (lol)
I guess shitting the bed with the ending to the Religious Wars arc wasn't enough for him.

Aya and Marisa both clearly describe their actions in-game in this chapter. Marisa references Aunn and Narumi, and says she went through Narumis door just like she did in game. Aya says she fought the dancers and Okina. How is this not an indication that their routes are just as canon? The only one pretty much omitted was Cirno other than to say she lost her powers. The last line about word spreading that Reimu fixed it doesn't invalidate the rest of the chapter.

Are you seriously bitching about Reimu resolving another incidient? This has some pretty obvious points that I will detail below. Though, to keep it simple, you can summarize it with: Marisa lacking Reimu's intuition and/or fundamental understanding of how Gensokyo works.
Though Reimu doesn't really have a grip on Gensokyo either, she does have the basic gist of it. Another point is that Marisa in any position of power is genuinely dangerous. All she does, she does for fun and everything else she does to gain more power. But, you can be pretty certain that Okina will use her similary to how Yukari uses Reimu.

Here's some details about the route thing:
Since ZUN never gave a clear statement, it was always tough to guess which route was the canon one and which wasn't. Often this was Reimu's route, while the EX route could have been anyone's guess. After all, the EX Stage was often just an appendix. ...An extra you might say.

However in the recent WaHH everyone talks like their route happened.
HOWEVER, it seems in this case, only Reimu's EX is canon. Meaning, everyone got booted after their fight and only Reimu realized something was amiss and came back.
Why do I think this? In Marisa's EX she's clearly going "credit me for the kill!" and Okina doesn't seem to mind to do so, yet we got the news of the Hakurei Shrine resolving the incident.

Eventually we will get another "EX is where shit actually gets resolved"-part that has to do with magic or something and Marisa will get her turn. Just stay patient. Marisa is already playing more and more of a key role.

And she doesn't just do things for fun and power, what is this PC98? She's shown other sides of her personality, anon, she isn't just some power hungry witch, she's capable of at least a smidgen of fucking ethical decision making, and has even done things out of a sense of altruism in the past.

Despite what Marisa said, I doubt she is that well-known or has good reputation in human village that she will be specifically credited by humans for resolving an incident no matter what she do, so it will always be either the Hakurei or other public faction that will be generally credited, regardless of who actually resolved it (for example if Reisen were the canon LoLK resolver, they would just said someone from Eientei did it instead of Reisen, or if it were Youmu she wouldn't be credited at all). Marisa probably only want recognition from more aware residents like the known characters, not the clearly clueless human villagers.
At best the humans would include Marisa as "that girl with the Hakurei" and part of the shrine.

In short, you should take the manga implication with a grain of salt, especially since it's from the PoV of human villagers who probably only know Reimu and other religious leaders.

Yeah, the initial reaction to HSiFS' playable cast may have had some "lolwut" mixed into it, but I don't see any reason to think that at this point anymore. If this WaHH chapter is anything to go by, then Aya's inclusion was setup for future plot stuff in the manga or perhaps even in games.

As for Cirno, ZUN obviously still likes her a lot. Fairies were important to HSiFS' incident, and there's humor value in associating her with summer and slapping a tan on her.
