I can tell you that Aoi is indeed quite insecure/self-conscious herself, so that might have something to do with the overuse of filters.

Not so long ago she uploaded a picture of herself to twitter when she went to visit some KiraKira Precure thing and people quickly called her out on editing her waist to look thinner.(the background got fucked up in the process so people noticed)
Aoi is also a rather straight-forward person (as much as her job lets her be) so she went with it and admitted that she did edit the picture and it was because she had gained some weight and was rather self-conscious about it. The fans that pointed the edit coined the term "space-bending magic" and she started using it too.

There was also this time in which she couldn't sleep on the middle of the night then decided to search google her name on a whim (which she haven't done in years) and one of the suggested words was "eyebrows".
Then she asked if her eyebrows were that weird, and that she likes them because they are the same as her papa, that she is a voice actress so it doesn't really matter that much etc
Then she promised that she will never search her name on the web ever again.

How do you find your favourite VAs? Performances, moe voice, range, looks?
I'm personally more of a performance-focused person, which results in most of my favourite seiyuu being men as I find they're usually the better actors.

Id say 70/30 performance/script ratio. Both are necessary elements, but performance is comparably more key. A script or a show in general can be shit, but a skilled performer can take the shit and still put on a good show despite the poor material given.
Another helpful element is original works/properties. Adapted material, ive heard, has less opportunity for ad-lib and really stresses sticking to the script and source. Original material gives the performers some more freedom in regards to all of that. For instance, the team that worked on Symphogear would ask the seiyuu what they think characters would do or how they would act in some situations during when episode drafts were being done. The seiyuu would also ad-lib a bit for things like the transformation sequences.

I think I've brought this up in another one of these seiyuu threads, but one of my favourite recent performances were all in Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, which was originally a manga I think. Ishida, Yamadera, Hayashibara, Seki, and Kobayashi Yuu all blew me away. It was so memorable for me that nearly two years after the first cour I still can't stop thinking about it.
But the thing is, Ishida phones it in with a lot of shows he does, but for this one he gave it his all and it really showed.
So your point about ad-libbing in original works would probably translate into motivation as well. I've only seen the first Symphogear and don't really follow it, but from what I've seen all the actresses really enjoy voicing for the show, so that plus their ability to have some input must obviously translate into putting more effort into it.
I know 4chan hates the show, but Re:Zero was a quite popular work in Japan and you can tell that Kobayashi Yuusuke wanted to do his best in portraying Subaru because it really showed in how well he acted in that, while he sometimes leaves a bit to be desired in his other roles. Same goes for Nobunaga in Kuzu no Honkai, great performance there but in most of his other non-comedic roles he's just ok.

I met a guy at the convention who said there's a website that gives you points for going to certain seiyuu, idols or singer's events. There was a guy with an overwhelming amount of points for Kanae Itou. So maybe that is what you remembered? It kinda makes me sad there is someone out there who is more dedicated than me, but to be honest, he has the advantage of being in Japan.

So I'd avoided thinking about it too much but two of Ai Kakuma's three main roles this season are a niche loli and a mother and the other is a fill in for Tane-chan. This pretty much officially means she is past prime for leading roles in otaku oriented anime, and by extension also means I am fucking old. rip
