I guess, very recognisable symbol of a pair that's supposed to be together. I don't remember it beign used in this drama outside of poster, though. (They were fated to be with each other and many of "accidents" proved that.)

Avoid any Ataru OVA/movie. I enjoyed the series but anything beyond it is character-destroying cashgrab. Nothing good to derive from them and the last movie is insultingly bad.
They ruined the series for me retrospectively.

I mostly watch comedy, slice of life, family type shows, sometimes romance. If it's a romance the more pink there is in the cover/promo art the less likely I am to like it, seems to be always true so far, more pink = more shoujo like which isn't for me. Anyway Kekkon Dekinai Otoko is probably my favorite, it's a slice of life comedy type thing, some romance at the very end though which didn't really fit. Family's Form (slice of life, comedy), Nietzsche-sensei, Seigi no Mikata (comedy), Bara no nai Hanaya (romance), H2 (teen sports romance), Namae Megami (family) are others I enjoyed. Haven't really watched all that many myself.

I have been thinking about just releasing some of the episodes as a v0 on nyaa separately for now because there may be some corruptions with the encode since I did notice one (fixed now) which was caused by using too many threads with avisynth during the encode. If anyone finds something they want changed before the final release then I can fix that up too... I guess I will do it once I'm finished with episode 8.

I think most of the appeal of K-dramas to Koreaboos are their ayy lmao-looking plastic celebs, nice visuals, and over the top melodrama moreso than anything else. I live in an area with a lot of Koreaboos and in the end it all comes down to how shiny and glamorous Koreans seem to them. The reason I can't really get into Korean stuff, including movies and K-dramas, is because of how a lot of it seems "over-produced", and too glamorous and perfected. Maybe this is just me being a "weeaboo", but Japanese dramas and a lot of their entertainment just feel more "authentic", if you get what I mean by that. The other western boards are getting more comfortable trying to push anything that comes from Japan out of their shitty board and into /jp/. /v/ was divided into several shit boards over the years so why can't we get more specialized boards for different Japanese content? At the very least, we need a clear separation between 2D and 3D content. The gravure and jav generals shouldn't be here in the first place for fucks sake.

There isn't, though. You're overestimating how many people there are in these threads. This wouldn't fit in on /tv/ and they'd shun it even harder because it's Japanese and "weebshit". This thread got 135 replies in a month while teetering on the verge of falling off page 10 numerous times. You think that there would be "enough material" to warrant making an entire new board for this?
/jp/ is a slow board but there's still dozens of touhou threads created every few hours. This and idols fit in way more with otaku culture than any other category, and are definitely not big enough to make a new board for.

I like the idea of putting toku since I know a bunch of people that started watching dramas because of it(myself included), but I get it, we can skip it.
Decades is a good idea. My only problem with it being that most pre-2000s stuff is unsubbed, and a list focusing on subbed shows seems more beginner friendly.
Also, since i'm not an expert in old dramas, is there really 10 vey good shows to recommend from the 70's or 80's?

>> No.17580543

>is there really 10 vey good shows to recommend from the 70's or 80's?
Definitely, but like you said, it's mainly unsubbed. How about we put the more recent series/decades up higher and the rest lower? That way people will see all those new subbed series and won't feel daunted.

>> No.17580946

>>17580526
I agree again, just list the decades in descending order, with the recent & subbed shows at the top of the chart.
That way if you work your way through it, the further down the chart you'd go the farther you'd get from the familiar and "relatable" context of modern shows. The people who would watch older shows (and I mean 70s and early 80s shows) are the people who are more likely to have an interest in Japanese culture outside of the more recent "Cool Japan" driven pop culture, and thus probably have enough of a grasp of Japanese to watch unsubtitled content and understand it.

>>17580526
I understand where you're coming from and I have the same basic background, but we already have a ton of picture guides and websites about the different toku franchises on /m/. Good post.

On Nigehaji: I think it's a flawed but important show. The main theme of it is something very actual in Japan right now, great part of it's popularity comes from that (and of course the dance).
The romance is well executed even if it's kinda simple. Also, as you said, the editing/directing is really great, especially in the few more ''imaginative'' scenes, like the EVA reference or the monologues.

If we agree on 10 really good shows of the 10s, maybe it doesn't deserve to be in tho.

The breakdown by decade is not helpful, nobody watches shows according to the production date. Start with useful genres.

Overall the list looks like its from reddit or mydramalist. You have to decide, who is this list for?

>> No.17613025

>>17612674
Yes, it's a popularity contest of shows people in this thread think are good. You should make your own list too.

And yeah, the decade system is kinda bad since we don't have much from the 70's and 80's.

Anybody else watched ROOKIES? Despite all those exaggerated/over the top scenes, the show actually is good in conveying it's themes and moral. The BB capt is also a well made character. I don't even know how baseball is played but I enjoyed the show. Nice ost too.

Any recommendation for a romance story that is at par with Boku wa Asu? I went on a binge watch of movie dramas recently, and out of the few four that I got to see, it was the one that struck me the most.

It's a good thing that I wasn't able to read the plot nor the tags because the twist kinda caught me off guard. I like that this wasn't the regular romance film that I was expecting.

Also, any good recommendation for a comedy series? I see that Yuusha Yoshihiko was included in the list. I tried watching Keibuho Yabe Kenzo, but I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of references since I'm not familiar with Trick.

Keep in mind that the list will be turned into an image after we've decided on what titles will will stay. This list is mainly for newfags that are curious about what they should start with so think entry level, hidden gems, and just plain shows we think people should watch anyways.

>> No.17616774

>>17616682
Splitting it by decade doesn't really work with so few old shows, but will splitting it by genre work when we have so few titles? There probably will be some categories that will have only one or two shows in them.
How about splitting them by something like "newfag's friendliness"? Japanese shows, especially comedies, can sometime be kind of... "specific", so some shows are easier to watch for beginners than others. It will probably be a problem to split them though.

Also: turning it my image is a bad idea. You can't copy-paste titles from an image and considering some shows having long titles (e.g. "Itsuka Kono Koi wo Omoidashite Kitto Naite Shimau") it will be a pain to write them to search them. Using something like pastebin would work better I think.

I think this method of organization would work well for an entry level chart on dramas, even without all of the extra text at the bottom. Making it into an image is nice because it gives you some visual reference, is easy to pass along, and you can always reference a pastebin or other such resource somewhere on the chart.

That's a good idea. So we'll make the image like you said.

I'm still waiting on more suggestions for the titles on the list, most likely for another week or maybe the end of the next thread. It should give us enough time to pick up some highly acclaimed shows and see if they could be added.

Help understanding Dad of Light Series:

Hey everyone, this is spoilers okay. But I didn't understand episode 7 of Dad of light.

He goes in for surgery, and then it cuts to 'one year later' and dad isn't home and the son and mom are talking like he's dead.

Then he shows up at the door of his sons room and their both happy he's home.

They didn't explain this at all.

Was he in a coma for a year? Was he recoving in hospital for a yer and they only made it SOUND like he was dead for dramatic effect?

What was I suppose to assume? Why was he gone for an entire year, they were said like he was dead or in a coma, and then he came home and they were happy.

Does anyone understand the time jump there and what happened after his surgery? Anyone understand that scene?

I know a little bit of Japanese and I even read a bit of the Japanese transcript but it doesn't help me understand, it was basically word for word the english version from what I could tell.

(Show's title in Japanese if it helps: 光のお父さん。)

What the fuck? For me it was simple as the surgery went well and they were just playing with the audience in the mother-son sad dialogue.

What through me off was the 'one year later' thing. Both mom AND son looked sad, and they never explained why, then dad comes in and suddenly happy, it implied that he was gone the whole time, but didn't say why or how or etc.

It just went from going in to surgery, to 1 year later and they're both sad like he's dead or in coma or in hospital for whole year, then he just then in that scene comes home, kinda thing.

But they don't explain it. Like, was he in hospital the whole time recovering? or.. you know?

Allow me to help fill in the blanks.
Cut to one year later after surgery, mom was shown being upset with son consoling her, dads pops in and asked what she was upset about, turns out her favorite korean actor just announced his marriage which made her being a fangirl depressed.
By the way there is also a sp after episode 7 if you didn't already know.

It's okay, my problem is the characters aren't flawed enough. Main characters are pretty much all good people, and if they lie, or lie by omission, it's out of kindness for others, not wanting to harm them.
Also, each episode kind of has the main character struggling with a task at work, but somehow in the end, it works out and he gets praised, because his kindness and willingness to try hard and do something different results in success. I guess I'd just like to see some drawbacks.
