What do you think an otaku is?
Do you consider yourself an otaku?

No, because "otaku" is a Japanese thing. Americans aren't otaku, just like they aren't hikikomori. It's a unique set of societal idiosyncrasies which don't exist here that make either. Weebs shouldn't borrow the word just to make themselves seem more Japanese. Neither are something to be proud of being.

It's not an exclusively Japanese thing, nor is it some terrible thing that people should be ashamed of being. Weebs or supposed weebs calling themselves otaku rarely if ever happens anymore.

Hikikomori is not an exclusively Japanese thing either. Just because it has a Japanese name doesn't mean it's specific to Japan.

You're a delusional weeb. Otaku is synonymous with geek or nerd. There are no "Japanese societal idiosyncrasies" that make it unique. Same goes for hikikomori, that's just the Japanese word for a neet shut-in

Are Americans not NEETs either because it's a British thing?

the fuck? i know for a fact that loser(neets, manchilds and assorted faggots like you) is a very universal concept.

The economy, work pressure, and school pressure unique to Japan all contributed to hikikomori, which simply don't exist here. Yes, every nation has that, but it's the unique level and combination of them that birthed hikikomori in Japan.

And weebs then romanticized that shit, to where being able to call yourself a hikikomori to explain your situation instead of just being a NEET leech became more attractive.

NEET is at least an English creation. It's a word we already had for that shit before it became fashionable, saying 'hikikomori' is unnecessary here.

If geek or nerd are fine, why not just use that? It's because weeb geeks took to otaku because they want to feel closer to their Japanese brethren, that's why.

>>17479500
No fucking shit they exist elsewhere. That's not the issue here.

Seems I struck a nerve with all these "otaku" here.

>> No.17479570

>>17479550
Shut-ins exist in the West. NEET is not the same thing as shut-in and there is nothing English about it except for the term itself, which seems to have only come into use outside Britain due to its use in Japan.

This is like people thinking honne and tatemae are uniquely Japanese concepts because they have these exotic Japanese names.

Geek/nerd is very similar but not identical to otaku.

I consider an Otaku to be someone who has invested so much time into their hobby that they can't fathom any other facet of life being as important as their favourite thing. They unjustifiably see anyone who isn't as knowledgable in their field of interest to be lesser than themselves as a person. It's truly a bizarre state of mind to witness in another person.
You could be the biggest rags-to-riches success story with a beautiful big tittied wife and have 3 beautiful children all living in a nice house that you alone paid for and these guys will not give a shit because you don't know the name of the intern that was in charge of mopping the floors during the development of Balloon Fight for NES.

Living psychopaths.

Oh, you're right. Because a samurai is different from a knight, obviously an otaku must be different from a nerd.
So by your logic, is there a difference between a cherry blossom and a sakura? It's different words, so it must be different things, right?

An otaku is someone that is very knowledgable of a certain topic, like a geek
I consider myself an otaku because my Japanese friend, a self-professed manga otaku in Tokyo, called me idol otaku when we spoke about music at length at his workplace (high end audio shop).

No, was the answer to that sarcastic question. Different languages usually have different words to describe the same thing. Otaku is to geek as katana is to sword.
