At least for ippan it's really true, though. The sheer number of disconnecting players alone should be enough reason for anyone to want to get out of it. Also most people play so aggressively that many aspects of the game get completely lost like having to judge if calling riichi might make your opponents defend.
Joukyuu is by far the most heterogenous room in terms of players skill. You will have good, interesting matches with 3 decent players as well as garbage games that could also take place in ippan.

been there friend. I dealt with it in different ways but here's some of the things you can do.

seeing so many of my riichi'd hands get fucked really made me develop an appreciation for dama tenpai. When that free sex button appears you have to fight your raging boner and decide if the wait is good, how much the hand is worth, how risky it seems, and your points relative to other players. if you have a 4han dama, you really dont get much more via riichi unless you get a ton of ura, but you cant rely on ura.

if someone riichi's with a 3sou, im going to avoid that tile's suji and it's ura-suji unless there's evidence that it's safe. so I'll avoid 25sou, 47sou,on the ura suji, and 6 sou in case you laid a trap. if you stay dama you can sneak one in, especially if you're in the lead.

in more general terms, if you feel your luck is shit, get a fuckup account and ride it out. You want to be able to lose, learn, and not tilt.try other mahhjong games.

review your games, look at your decisions and see if it really was the best option. tenhou's tile efficiency calculator is great. Also review what the other players did and see what they did that got them ahead. did they just magically draw their hands or was there some actual play you could learn from?

dont post a replay here until you've reviewed your games and are stumped. you don't need the armchair tenhoui telling you you were a moron for pushing when you should have defended unless you really need to eat the humble pie.

we're all gonna make it brah

Though doesn't having 4 regular sets of anything and a pair automatically make a 'no yaku' yaku?

>> No.17261993

>>17261953
in order to win you need a valid hand consisting of four melds and a pair (with three notable exceptions but lets not get into the minutia) and you also need at least one multiplier (aka "yaku")

your hand's biggest issue is that it isnt legal. dragons and winds cannot be mixed with each other to form a meld so the RGW dragon block doesn't count.

if you had had 3 green dragons instead, your hand would have been legal and the yaku requirement also met.

more on yaku: as you learn to play you'll hit situations where your legal cannot win. memorize yaku to avoid this.

good luck and have fun!

correct. a set of dragons will always give you one yaku, but winds must either match the round or your seat to be considered a yaku. in your image you called the west wind while in the south round and your seat also being south so it had no value.

the only wind that would be ok to call in this particular situation would be the south wind as it would give you two multiplers (round and seat wind)

Can they just fuck off with that already? What's wrong with a normal table with players that don't cheat at a place where an automatic table wouldn't be expected? Like, as soon as they came out, somehow you can't play legit mahjong unless it's on a 400,000 yen table.

Well if you are getting 4th almost 30% of the time you are doing a lot wrong.

2.62 as an average placement means you are significantly less than average at your rank you are at, so it makes sense you aren't progressing.

Your stats aren't actually that far off from what I have, but if your placement is that bad then you need to focus on bigger hands. That's a huge deal in rate. If you want to play that way you have to counterbalance it out and punish the other players when you do win.

With a decent number of games under your belt you know the game and need to pick up some strategy, so it's probably about time to read the book.

Hey, does anyone know of a good cheat sheet I can print out? My friends wanted to learn how to play but don't know how to read Mongolian Moon Runes. Preferably, the cheat sheet would also have a list of yaku and fu points on it, maybe with an English naming scheme as well, cause I don't think of them as the type that would get full on weeby enough to learn that many Japanese terms. But, having said that, I don't want the EMA one. I'm not fully on board with their scoring sense or insistence on using Chinese terms over Japanese.

That's not what the UMA is.

>>17278076
That's the shorthand they use to tell how much someone has won or lost over a game. I'll skip the long explanation of it and just say that in real life you would multiply those numbers by the rate. The rate is usually determined as X amount of money per 1,000 points decided before the match.

So if matched ended as:
+65
+9
-18
-56
And the rate was say 50 yen, That would mean 4th place would pay out 2800 yen to 1st place, 3rd place would pay out 900 yen, 450 to 2nd, 450 to first, 2nd place would win a total of the 450 yen, and 1st place won a whole 3250 yen.

UMA is something different. Usually it's an additional bonus/penalty for ranking in the game. The usual UMA is 5-10, meaning 3rd would pay 5 units to 2nd, and 4th would pay 10 units to 1st.

Currently translating a guide to cheating when I came across this.

It's quite harsh in that the dice roll has no room for error but if you do pull it off, your opponent's hand is as good as dead. If she tries to act clever and throw the dai san gen, you have all the power in the world to turn your 3 pairs into a very real dai san gen complete with a pao rule attached to punish them. The only way out is to give up on the dai san gen at an early stage and build a faster chiitoitsu.
Do you think you could overcome the greed for a dai san gen? What would be the digital thing to do?

I'm just reading through the Two-Player Mahjong game in Ten, and Ken says that Ten is using "Tse-ii-men discards" to fool Harada.

I've been using my best google-fu but I can't figure out what Tse-ii-men is supposed to be, it doesn't seem to be a yaku. Some google book has the term listed but refers me to "zetsuichimon", which again, doesn't give me any useful hits.

What is Tse-ii-men?

>> No.17316004

>> No.17316475

>>17315998
Tse-ii-men and zetsuichimon are the same thing, 絶一門.
It's like anon said, eliminating one suit from your hand.

Pros:
-Your discards will look kinda like a honitsu/chinitsu.
>souzu souzu souzu souzu manzu shit she's in tenpai for pinzu I'd better fold with my souzu/manzu tiles all the souzu tiles were taken by her so I'll go with dealing this manzu
>BAM
>zetsuichimon
-Even if they don't get fooled by the discards, you do gain the flexibility of playing with single suit waits. The more same suit tiles you hoard, the more likely a multi-sided wait will appear. If everyone folds and your tsumo chances are high, it's your win.

Cons:
-You're losing out on a chinitsu
-The moment you decide to tse-ii-men, your urekire gets sliced up. If it's your iishanten, you could still make it. If you try and start a hand with zetsuichimon, you'll face serious speed issues.

My own take on it, courtesy of wikipedia. Take with a pinch of salt.

Calling riichi drops you down to a guaranteed second place if you don't win, while a tsumo from the kamicha or shimocha would end the game with you first if you didn't riichi.

Another thing to consider is that I find it hard to believe anyone would drop the 4m against a riichi from you. The toimen doesn't need to be too aggressive, either, since just keeping tenpai would just win him the game in case of a draw (I think? would he get the riichi stick if there was a draw?).

So no, I wouldn't call it. There are fair chances of the 7m being dropped, letting you ron and win the game without calling riichi.

>> No.17333420

>>17333416
>Calling riichi drops you down to a guaranteed second place if you don't win

By this I mean if someone else manages to make a winning hand that doesn't involve the toimen dealing in, or a big enough tsumo to drag the toimen down for the 1000 point difference. Say, if the shimocha went for a quick tanyao nomi and got a tsumo, you'd be fucked if you called riichi.

Obviously the haku is the right choice (even though I'm expecting a dora tanki since it was posted), but the 4p should also be safe because the 7p dora just passed and all the 2p are gone so it can't be ryanmen. The 8s looks pretty safe since it's suji to both.

>> No.17335469

>>17334640
Given dealer's dora discard, everyone is attacking. 2m feels like an okay discard. It's one-chance, though some retarded pinfu + chiitoi double-ron gotcha is possible, and toimen is the most likely player to be waiting on it which means still being 3rd by 200 points if it's a mangan hit and less chance of getting ippatsu ronned by shimocha. There is also a lack of options for defense thanks to two calls, so might as well take that chance to cut off the round with a win on a decent wait.

For the full defense option, 4p is the safest discard, and 5p is not so bad to toss afterward. Souzu/dragons look like danger zones for some nonsense honitsu/chinitsu bullshit from shimocha from his discards, even if 8s is suji and there are three haku in hand. At least double ron is not possible with a haku discard.

I'm just a joukyuu scrub so I'm hoping this allows me to play against tokujou and houou players.

I guess the lesson is to never give up even after you're getting shit on the whole game, since once in a blue moon, people will shit on themselves.

The reality is that you dealed in to some 3900 points hand that was amplified with luck.

Anyone who plays mahjong should watch Saki and Akagi.

Speaking of Akagi, some of the tracks are missing from the released OST. Did anyone ever bother to stitch them together from the episodes?

I was reflecting on this after the tournament yesterday. Even against tokujou and houou players, I could still top the game purely because of dora. While terribly fun for me, it didn't feel fair for them.
However in the end, I still lost a majority of games and ended up in the negative. Hands amplified by luck mean jack in the long run, luck can only last for so long.

Replays related. Tanyao dora 4 and Tanyao dora 5. Not fun to deal into.

I've already seen the anime. I'm talking about the live action.

I just glanced through the drama's first episode and Saki's finale in the movie.
Most faces are cute, acting is meh, mahjong is ugh. It's not good enough to convince me to sit through the whole thing. I might do it just because it's saki but not because it's good.
