It dates back a long time to a legendary /g/ thread about network diagrams. I posted a setup of my home network and a poster replied "Your little sister is Hinamori Amu?" With the OP picture. The distro of choice doesn't matter. You're using the same version of WINE no matter what. VNs (and gaming in general) are kinda tricky on Linux though, and I would keep a Windows partition around if you are seriously into that stuff. With that said, you can get a lot of things to work with the right tweaking. Tsukihime can run natively with a patched build of ONscripter, and Fate/Stay Night works almost perfectly with the exception of the full motion videos. I've also had no problem running Planetarian, but I'm not a big VN guy, so I haven't tried much else.

Depends on what you have now, and what you want to run specifically.

The following build will suffice for lighter games (not CRYSIS, will max out games like TF2) and it can handle 1080p of course;

CPU: Intel Pentium Dual-core E5200
Motherboard: Gigabyte EP45-DS3L or Gigabyte EP45-UD3R
RAM: 2GB or 4GB Corsair/G.SKILL/Mushkin memory, with low latency timings; 4-4-4-12
GPU: Ati Radeon HD4670
PSU: Any 450W - 500W Corsair, Seasonic, or PC Power and Cooling PSU will do. Seasonic is preferred here, but it may be a bit more expensive than the others.
HD: WD6400AAKS for price:performance. The new 1.5TB drives are looking pretty good for storage.
as for the CASE, the Antec 300 and Coolermaster CM690 are nice cases.

This will cost you 500$-600$. I'm from Europe myself, so I can't be more specific on the price.

If my machine is pretty much just a conduit to 2d-land, is Linux gonna give me problems or will it be relatively doable?

START WITH UBUNTU. /g/ will say go straight for Arch but that is suicide. All of the distros will be able to emulate with the same capability. If you cannot find a Linux native emulator, you can run Wine, which is a Windows compatibility layer you can install a Windows emulator using if you cannot find one for Linux. Than again if it is for the PC just install Wine and run it there. Installing Wine on Ubuntu is relatively painless as far as the Linux world goes.

I personally use Linux myself and I have never looked back. It is very different than Windows and tasks are done in very different ways. However if your computer is a 2d land, Linux is excellent once you've learned the basics of it. You no longer are able to be infected with malware simply by being connected to the internet.

I view my doujin with gqview. To install it, I simply open a terminal and type "sudo apt-get install gqview" and it goes ahead and immediately starts to install. For me, Linux is simply a better way of doing things. I don't need Windows for anything anymore and many things Linux does better. To get infected with a virus using Linux, you have to really try hard.

After you get over the initial learning curve, I have found it excellent and I prefer it over Windows. The learning curve is there and it can get hard because it is much different. But for me learning my way around it was been completely worth it. Plus you get to hack wireless and crack people's Windows passwords. Score.

Personally, I think it's smarter to get one stronger card. That said, it's not really necessary to get a 400$ GPU just to max out crysis. It will be obsolete within one or two years. (this is arguable) The best price:performance card on the market right now is the HD4850 from ATI. The fastest single slot card is the HD4870X2 (this will rely on crossfire for scaling though). The fastest singleGPU card (no crossfire or sli) on the market is the GTX280.

I don't use OS X, I use Linux so I'm not 100% sure.

On Linux we have the ntfs-3g driver, which lets us read/write NTFS(windows) partitions. I'm pretty sure OS X should have a port of this particular driver, or at least something similar. I can't help you any more than this though, maybe a friendly macfa/g/ will be so kind.

Or you can use FAT32. Be ware that the filesize limit for FAT32 is 4GB, so you cannot have any files larger than 4GB on this partition. (you can split files in multiple rar archives to overcome this though)

I mainly want to run strategy games and PS2 ISOs and shit. Shootan and benchmarks aren't my thing so I don't care about Crysis, but I'd love to be able to run Odin Sphere and Nippon Ichi games at a decent framerate.

What I have right now isn't so bad in stats, but apparently the specific parts are pretty bad. Like it's a 3.0 P4, but it's one of the bad ones, and one of those GeForce FX abominations (5200 iirc). Messing with the motherboard and shit is way beyond me so I was just planning on replacing mainly the processor and video card and sticking in some more RAM maybe.

Thanks for the list. Maybe I should just start from scratch. I dunno if my power supply could handle new parts anyway. Oh well, I'll just procrastinate more.

Yeah, that build will completely max out FFXI. I learned the required system specs from a quick google search, and that should be more than enough. You can even downgrade some parts if you would like; I would not recommend it though. This is the "sweet spot" in the low-mid end segment as of now.

>>1678219
Yeah, if you're stuck with outdated components on everything it's often smart to make a fresh start; so that there will be no bottlenecks in the system. If you're willing to do PS2 emulation though, you might want to look at a faster GPU (HD4850, or the HD4870 even) and a faster CPU (E7x00 or E8x00), since I seem to remember PS2 emulation is quite resource intensive.

>Yeah, if you're stuck with outdated components on everything it's often smart to make a fresh start; so that there will be no bottlenecks in the system.

Yeah, the thing is I don't even know if they're outdated or not. Running dxdiag is the extent of my expertise, I don't know how to check my power supply or my motherboard or anything like that.

But 500-600 for everything isn't so bad at all, so I might just start over anyway. Just have to get over my fear of completely breaking everything when I try to put it together.

Temperature does not matter as long as the components stay at a reasonable temperature. People in warmer climates may have more trouble keeping temperature under control. Most susceptible to damage are the GPU and the CPU. If the CPU gets to hot, your computer will immediately halt (emergency shutoff) and you will know. Damage to the GPU due to high temperatures can do damage in the shadows over time without you realizing it and then suddenly you will have artifacting, which means it is too late. Download a program called "speedfan" and it will report to you the temperatures of various components.

As for the moisture: as dry as possible.

I am fairly certain that even if a virus can access the BIOS no allowed setting would cause your computer to explode as BIOS are hardwired so no amount of hacking will give it new settings. However in some older computers the BIOS has settings that could break your computer like if you set the clock speed much higher than your processor could handle it would burn out your central processing unit, but thats pretty much the worse thing that a virus can do other than crash your hard drive by constantly saving + deleting junk data. I also highly doubt that a computer is capable of actually exploding as there are no compounds used in microchips to act as oxidizers.

Morning /jp/ bros.

You are looking for a Gigabyte P45-DS3L.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128345

For a PSU you want a Corsair or Seasonic. Corsair is better for GAEMIN, Seasonic is more expensive but they are better for multiple hard drives, but have less power on the 12v rail so can arguably be not as good for gaemin as the Corsair is. Look for 450-550 watts.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151027

This is a Seasonic 550w. It is what I use, so you know it's good. It would be great for many hard drives.

Unfortunately no. But it is an extremely solid choice and allows for healthy overclocking and the quality of the board is top notch, I use one myself. If you need extra features like FireWire and RAID then I suggest a Gigabyte P45-UD3P for about $20 more.

>>1678773

Those temps are unfortunately very hot. Clean it out by spraying the vents with compressed air. If you feel comfortable, you may unscrew it and open it up a little bit to get at it better. Laptops however tend to simply run hotter as you simply don't have the airflow of a desktop.

If you are going to do RAID, you really should get yourself a SCSI card anyways and do it properly. Though you might be able to get by with SATA/PATA you won't have enough slots with what the board has on it to make a worth while array, as ideally you need an extra slot or two.

Agreed if RAID is a big thing for you or you plan on doing something like RAID5. The P45UD3P has only two RAID sata ports. It can be useful if you have two 1 or 1.5TB drives and want them mirrored. I have two WD 1TB Caviar Black drives but no RAID (Gigabyte P45-DS3L) so I manually sync them. In case of a failure of one, there is still one that retains my data until I get a new one and mirror that one. RAID1 seems the most useful on desktops, especially for /jp/'s purposes, as it allows redundancy. Of course it isn't really necessary, as I said, I get along without it just fine by making manual backups. Only 20 more for a P45UD3P though, and it is nice to have the options of two RAID ports + FireWire + eSata for external drives.

or if you are doing some data center work you might want multiple 15 gig SAS RAID 5 arrays, but that gets retardedly expensive (but oh god is it fast and reliable.)

For backing up anime either get a BD writer or a DVD writer and and just write disks every so often keeping about 1-2 TB of disk on hand.

The neckbeards at /g/ recommend ESET NOD32 Home Anti Virus for your needs of preventing malware infections. It costs $40 for a license for one computer. Another solid option is Kaspersky Internet Security, which has a software firewall (usually unnecessary unless you have pirated applications you need to prevent from calling home) and that is around $80 for 3 licenses for 3 computers. I've used both and I recommend NOD32, the system slowdown caused by its real time scanning is among the least of all of them and the detection rates are top notch.

That is running a little hot. What kind of processor do you have? It would generally be running too hot for a Core 2 and a touch too hot for an AMD X2, but if it is a Pentium 4 that is pretty much within the normal range, P4s run very hot.

I am guessing that is a laptop because of the battery. I'd say that is pretty much an acceptable temperature for a laptop CPU, even more so if it is an older one like a P4. Mobile processors are designed to withstand heat better than desktop ones. I would still suggest buying some canned air from a computer store (or Best Buy type retailers) and spraying out all the vents every so often to get a lot of the dust out, if it gets too clogged it will overheat and die.

Than that is fine for a P4, those are temperatures I would expect, it looks like it is working fine. I am unsure about where to buy parts from in Mexico, sorry about that.

When you get a new computer I would suggest an Intel E5200. Both of the Linux /g/angsters in this thread use it and it is an excellent processor for around only $80-$90. When I boot into Windows I can max out TF2 (but that has more to do with my graphics card, currently a 9800GT, but if you are getting a higher performing card I suggest the ATI HD4850, performs much better for around $30 more). It would be a massive upgrade over the P4. The P4 was kind of a disappointment that Intel put out, but they made up for it with Core 2. A Core 2 Duo at 1.4GHz will out-perform a 3.0GHz P4, and the E5200 is a newer Wolfdale model that runs at 2.5GHz natively, but you can overclock the hell out of it. I have it running at 3.0GHz without it breaking a sweat. I have an upgraded cooler from the stock Intel one, but the stock one will easily handle an overclock to 3.0GHz. Just get a solid motherboard like the Gigabyte P45-DS3L for around $100 and pick up some good memory. I recommend going ahead and getting 4GB instead of 2GB because the price increase is very minor between the two. Corsair XMS2 at 800MHz is a good choice.

/g/ and /jp/ are the two boards least susceptible to the cancer and guido normalfaggotry. These threads have both been awesome, and I want to thank both /jp/ for helping us out on this quest and my fellow /g/angsters who were willing to help answer questions for them that would normally get their heads cut off on /g/.

>/g/ and /jp/ are the two boards least susceptible to the cancer and guido normalfaggotry.

But we've been completely overrun by it. I guess they just don't bother with threads full of Shugo Chara.

/jp/ has it, just not much during the night shift, when all this took place.

Holy shit this thread is still alive

I can't say I've ever noticed a marked difference between day and night on /jp/, other than in traffic. It's just real slow at night, I imagine the good:shit ratio is pretty much the same. I miss the old /a/ nightshift.

I wonder if we'll ever get this.

It was never scanned, how hard is it to understand?
Same with that image of Tewi kicking Rinnosuke's balls and having his glasses shatter.
Anyways, http://hoppege-milk.hp.infoseek.co.jp/200801.htm< as far as I got.

I know a guy going to Japan this summer, I asked him to search for it. I would consider buying it online myself but I'm slightly worried about customs and I don't know where it's sold.

I'll buy it if you can find a place to buy it online.

If you live in japan you could use

You can't actually, they're out of stock.
If they had stock, you could use a forwarding svc to buy it, heh.
Incidentally, I think I was the one who originally posted the link to TnA. Hmm.

Very well...
Last alternative would be to send an email to the artist(jingmilkmilk at hotmail dot com) asking for either a place to buy or copy of it.
Make sure to have someone proof-read your translated email before you send it to him.
