Hello, I am Ryukishi07.

It brings me great joy to present to you another story, going from the world of Higurashi When They Cry to this new world of Umineko When They Cry. I truly hope you will enjoy this one just as much as the previous.
In Umineko, events will unfold similarly to those of a mystery novel, but the issue in question is not quite the same as the traditional "find the culprit" narrative. In this case, the question is, "Does the witch exist or not?"
When it comes to mystery-suspense stories, the distinction between an occult tale and a mystery tale is a major one. However, because the answers to virtually all stories in this realm follow boilerplate mystery tropes, readers are able to pigeonhole what is presented ("It's just another one of those mysteries, after all"), which has caused much genre's original appeal to be lost.
Looking back, the blurring of the line separating the occult and logical mystery, which was a much greater part of the mystery-suspense novels in the early twentieth century and before, created a much more exciting and nervous atmosphere for the readers. I wrote Umineko When They Cry with the hope of providing readers with that same tension and excitement.
Enjoy the rich and vivid witchly atmosphere as much as you can.
It's obviously just another mystery story, you say to yourself. Try to follow along and pick apart the mystery, and we'll see how far you get. The witch's torture has already begun."

And I don't see a WTC working in modern day Tokyo. Sure, Hinamizawa wasn't completely secluded, but it had that feeling to it. WTC shouldn't be set anywhere big, or where police power is a big part of the story. It should focus on the characters dealing with the fucked up shit with minimal exposure to police.

I bought an official Shannon pillow on ebay. The material is soft and squishy, but it's the type of satin fabric that will catch if you have dry skin.
Her one breast is kind of deflated and I can't reshape it even when I try to knead the stuffing into position.

Does Japan hate Umineko?
I've been reading that Umineko kinda "killed" 07th Expansion's popularity as a circle and any future prospects for his work to be adapted into anime and the like, I believe this discussion is old but I'm new to these threads so I would like to know the opinions you guys have about it.

I don't think Ryukishi's poplurarity is completely dead. All his VNs since Umineko has manga adaptations, and Rose Guns Days even had a stage play last year. Rewrite also got an anime adaptation, but I'm not sure if that really counts as his work

Among those I know, most of the people that know about Higurashi haven't heard of or checked out Umineko. It's possible Higurashi was just a big hit by itself and that didn't really follow for Umineko. A rural Japanese village with a cast of schoolkids seems like it would have more appeal to otaku than a Western themed mansion full of older characters.
Maybe it wasn't so much that Umineko "killed" the popularity, but that Higurashi was just more of a one-hit wonder. But that's just my opinion, it's been over 5 years since Umineko ended and I wish I followed it more closely at the time.

So I just finished Episodes 1-8 of Umineko and am still processing it all. I looked up the plot points afterwards and apparently Shannon, Kannon, and Beatrice were all the same person? I guess I just STOPPED THINKING, but I didn't really pick up on that at all, I was vaguely aware that Shannon/Beatrice were intimately connected after Beatrice "took on" Shannon's affection for Battler, but I didn't think it went that far. In the end though, all that matters is the truth you came up with, not exactly what the manga explained to you. So you can choose to take that information and do what you please with it. Accept it, or make your own truth, it doesn't matter which.

If you've read the VN but are interested in checking out the manga, are there any particular arcs where the official translation is recommended over the scanlations?

Buying the official releases of the Umineko manga would be nice, but the volumes cost quite a bit where I live, so I'd rather not buy all of it at once, especially since I remember the Higurashi manga having some really ridiculous translations like reality marbles becoming "personality bounded-fields" and nipah being translated as "beam".

I definitely picked up on the whole ambiguous gender thing, even before Will asked Lion and the plot made it deliberately ambiguous. I had an inkling of a feeling that Shannon/Sayo were the same person (or a split personality) but wasn't sure. It makes sense looking back that Shannon/Kanon are the same person especially after Shannon bugs out when Will asks her to grab Kanon. I guess personally I want to believe that Sayo was female the whole time. I was thinking of reading the manga and drawing more of my own interpretations, I never really felt the whole gender insecurity thing in the VN. I guess Sayo could be male and lead to Genji taking the same precautions, if you think that Kinzo would lock him up in Kuwadorian again, but that still doesn't make a whole lot of sense since he had tried to get Natsuhi to raise the child in the first place.

The only thing we know about this is that it's going to be When They Cry 5, so it's far too early to worry about it being bad. We can make guesses about the quality of it by pointing out the strengths and flaws of his previous stories, but this is still going to be a new story. Maybe he'll repeat his mistakes and make new ones, or maybe he's learned from his mistakes. We have nothing to go by as of now. There's no guarantee it will even be a visual novel because he expressed interest in other mediums for it.

Episode 4's stuff with Ange is probably one of the slowest parts of the series, which is a shame since when she first appeared at the end of Episode 3 I was totally hyped to learn more about her.

I would go on a shopping spree with Mammon at the mall. I would get her whatever her heart desired, even if it kills my wallet. I just want her to be satisfied.

Belphegor and I would sit around home all day, watching TV as we cuddled. I'd gladly keep her busy, making her get us food or prepare the popcorn.

Beelzebub and I would go to an all you can eat buffet. There she could eat as much as she wanted. She'd probably eat the place clean, which is fine if it's all you can eat.

I'd go see a movie with Satan, just to see how angry she'd get at it if it sucked. She might start complaining about it in the theater and I'd have to scold her to be more quiet. We'd rip it to shreds after getting out of the theater.

Asmodeus and I would spend a nice romantic day on the beach. We'll swim, have some fun, play some beach ball, and watch as the sun sets together.

I'd play around in the park with Leviathan. If she ever gets upset or sad I'll hold her hand and tell her how much I care about her. I'll make her feel important and special.

And finally, Lucifer and I would go to the the arcade. If we're ever playing against each other I'd let her win, and the two of us would make the best team if we played together. I'd do anything to make her feel that she's the one on top.

Belphegor's date sounds a bit unfair to her, but I know she'd prefer it that way. Putting her to work around the house would make her feel needed.

I can imagine the restaurant owner's crying face as he watches Beelze devour expensive food without end. They'd probably have to close down for the day once the two of you leave.

Satan would probably get all flustered and cute after being scolded for shouting, and start stuffing her mouth with popcorn to hide her embarrassment.

Personally, I think Asmo would prefer an overly cliche romantic date. Like taking her to a high class restaurant on a moonlit night, or to a fancy ball where she can wear a fancy dress and dance together with you.

Leviathan would insist on holding your hand the entire time and would give it a cautious squeeze every time a pretty girl passes by on a walk.

I think losing to Lucifer on purpose to stroke her pride would be a bad idea. That'll just build up her ego and put her at risk for an even bigger humiliation down the line. Plus she'd be really upset if she found out you went easy on her. Instead, I'd go all out and have fun together. Then if I win, I'd offer to help her get better so that she can actually have something to boast about.
