Poison is actually pretty good defensively with only two weaknesses and since the introduction of the Fairy-type it can be quite useful offensively. Not to mention that the fact that they can't be affected by the ever-used Toxic status gives them much more staying power. Since Poison works so well when paired with many different types it's no surprise that Pokemon such as Amoonguss and Crobat are as good as they are. There's also Toxic Spikes, an entry hazard mostly exclusive to Poison-types that could potentially really ruin your opponent's day.

Hard to say, Medicine is a Tsukumogami, but she's supposedly a ventriloquist doll of the same size as the big doll, according to Akyuu in PMiS at least (which may as well be a fork for ZUN's own "theories").
From the few Tsukumogami we've seen; Kogasa, Kokoro, the Tsukumos and Raiko, they're all accompanied by their respective item and essentially still are the item. If Medicine really is a ventriloquist doll, then she already is her item, the small doll is a redundancy, right?

I've been wondering if the reason Medicine's differences from the other Tsukumogami could be due to her being something of a hybrid. If we assume the doll would have become a Tsukumogami regardless of where it had been abandoned, what if the conditions of the Nameless Hill were such that something else would have been born there if even if the doll hadn't been left there, like a poison fairy or some other sort of youkai? What happens if the conditions for creating a new fairy/youkai/whatever were to overlap with the conditions for creating another similar entity, and so instead of two of them being born, there was just one with the traits of both?

I don't think that's true. Most manga and doujin I've seen typically have a well-sized cast, especially if it's more plot-based. This includes ZUN's official works as well.

You might not see them in every one, but that would be silly. It depends on what character(s)the plot is following, where they go, and what's going on. Any character that does things that could apply to the plot there's a good chance you'll see. Or anyone who's in a place that the main characters go.
