The character Featherine bears many similarities to the character of Hanyu from Higurashi, the most striking of which being her crescent head ornament. Feath-"Uhh, uhh"-rine is also a nod to Hanyu's characteristic flustered catchphrase, as are instances where "Augustus Aurora" is shortened to "Au-au".

>Featherine can beat anything as long as it's within her domain.
Only so far as she can write it or imagine it. One of the key aspect of Featherine's power is that she has authorship powers, which can theoretically defeat anything if you can imagine it. It's the reason why she can defeat basically every character in fiction. However, this doesn't apply to Lovecraftian monsters. Can you defeat something that is unimaginable? Or turns you insane at the mere sight?
It's just impossible to imagine something unimaginable.

>>16630889
I actually agree. Someone back in the France 2012 convention asked Ryukishi if he ever read any Lovecraft, and he said he didn't. Apparently, according to him, there's already this sort of lovecraftian style in Japanese mythology and literature but is somewhat different from what we know. I don't know what it is and I'm too lazy to check.

Two shots in a winchester.
At first everyone will try to avoid Rudolf, but Rudolf knows that he's powerless without his Winchester so he'll try to conserve the bullets for the last two remaining.
Everyone will catch on to this strategy and gang up on Rudolf to prevent him from automatically winning, so he'll have to use the bullets in self defense shooting one person, that by chance is Krauss (because of his big stature), but Krauss doesn't go down instantly and manages to tackle Rudolf so Rudolf has to spend his 2nd shot on Krauss again, this time killing him.

Unfortunately both Eva and Rosa are there to finish Rudolf off.

After that it's a duel between Eva and Rosa. After that I can't even begin to guess how that would go down.

Good analysis.
You're forgetting personal grudges though. Eva has most reason to hate Krauss and would likely go for him immediately. Kicking him in the face, he'd stumble backwards into the wall. Rudolf uses the confusion to shoot Eva in the face. Distracted because he's aiming, Rudolf doesn't realise Rosa crept up to him and whacked him on the head with a gold bar. Rudolf and Eva are dead, Krauss unconscious. Eva walks up to Krauss and jams a pen in his eye, then slams it into his skull with the gold bar.

Rose Guns Days is great at times but is a mixed bag. It starts off slow and none of the characters have chemistry that Ryukishi is known for. You start to wonder why you should even bother reading but then after the first mini boss is defeated and the first real villain shows up, it gets good. RGD is absolutely worth reading for the villain. Season 3 is up there with some of his best, like Higurashi ep 6 and Umineko ep 5. Cultural keikaku jew warfare. It's glorious.

It's absolutely worth reading for the villains which are all great tier.
There's a part in Final Season that will make you scream as hard as you did at the end of Umineko episode 3.

The problem comes more with how the story overall ends. Ryukishi got sick for three weeks and the ending feels very rushed because of it. Still worth reading.

Excuse me for late reply.
I read all of them a year ago.
So basically Battler understood the truth and Beato is still alive, hence at the end of ep 6 when they are about to pull trigger on Erika, Battler asks Beatrice if she is sure about this.
Beatrice goes "I'm glad I met you."
This implies to me that. He has proven that he knows the truth so he has to bury her.
I don't quite get why are they burying her in a different Kakera along with Lion, because apparently Bern has the hole of the gameboard and not Battler.
This transition still doesn't make any sense.

Nah, it's heavily implied and even explicated that they were still bound by Umineko's meta-rules, as she was the gamemaster of that time and Battler the Detective. That's why she were as surprised as she were, and why she needed to kill him by using mystery stories.

Basically she thought, at first, that they were fighting outside Umineko, and she should have thrashed him mightily. But unknowingly to her, Featherine was acknowledging an Umineko game at the same time. As long as a higher power acknowledged Battler's position as a Detective in an active game, then the only way to kill him was to use detective mysteries. She switched gears and thrashed him anyway.

It's pretty explicit, and though it's a decently complex concept to understand, by this point any Umineko fan should understand.

That particular scene is frequently not well understood by fans. Battler's punch doesn't mean he has the power of punching multiverse-class foes or can punch faster than the speed of light, and his anti-magic ability doesn't mean he can cancel magic from gods or something equally stupid.

Endless Nine is the recognition of his position as Umineko's detective by the gameboard. He can't accept magic, so he won't, by the very rules all players abide. Him using it during this particular fight surprises Bern because it means they are still playing a game and are still bound by it when she believed their fight to be outside of it.

This is a slightly autistic powerlevel discussion, but it is highly relevant.

I just finished this VN today. Why were none of the "games" solved in the entire novel? Was the point for the fans to solve them? It feels like the entire first half of the VN had almost no point. Also is there anything that refutes that Shannon/Kanon was the true culprit? Outside of magical explanations of course. I enjoyed the VN but it was frustrating for it to start out as a mystery and completely abandon all of that.

True, it may be obvious, but by design, it doesn't make sense at all. The game very blatantly yet casually reveals the culprit to you (it's of course very easy to figure out in the second half), the entire game should have built up towards a reveal, but it doesn't, then it brushes it under the rug, because the plot isn't focused on the culprit. I just thought it was utterly absurd that the plot became so distant from solving the mystery that it doesn't even acknowledge Beatrice's true form, considering that sounds like it would have been a good direction for it. It feels a lot like it tried really hard to end with a happy ending, which it achieved, by ignoring the original plot.

Best/most memorable (to me) parts of Umineko by chapter:

Ep1: Maria facing the wall and singing in the lounge among the corpses
Ep2: Rosa and Maria vs Goats
Ep3: Rosa'a death by Evatrice
Ep4: Tea Party and Beato's loss to Battler
Ep5: I'm going to become grandfather
Ep6: Erika's Wedding
Ep7: Young Kinzo in the submarine dock
Ep8: Ange's final question/Epilogue and the new Fukuin House

Episode 2 was the best episode and had the best ending. IMO everything started to fall apart around halfway through episode 6 but really finished strong in episode 8.

For instance, if the seven stakes had been actual visual representations of their traits, and the chiestas had been creepy oversized bunnies it would have made Beatrice seem much more sinister. And then, at a later point you could have had a scene from marias perspective where they do look like anime girls, and done the whole "without love it can't be seen" shtick.

Let's have another Battle Royale.
No theme this time, just four characters with random, suitable weapons. Vote for your favourite and then type out how you think the fight would go.

This time it takes place in Kinzo's Study.
Kinzo - Portrait of Beatrice
Kyrie - Chessboard and pieces
Erika - Duct Tape
Ronove - Pot of scolding hot tea

Agreed that Kinzo's got the advantage of the field. It's his own study, he knows all the best spots. His weapon is slightly lackluster though. He could smash the portrait over someone's face and ruin it, but would he?
Kyrie can smack the shit out of everyone with her chessboard and shove pieces into their mouths until they choke. Then again, Ronove's tea could burn everyone and stun them for just enough time to be hit over the head with the tea pot which could be lead. Erika has her preferred weapon, but how much can duct tape do when you've got people smashing boards/portraits/teapots everywhere?

>> No.16646594

>>16646541
I imagined Kyrie using the chessboard as a sheild in one hand while gripping the chess pieces in the other and using them as makeshift brass knuckles.

I don't think Kinzo would use his precious portrait to directly attack. Instead, he would use its visage as insiration for a high intensity song that assaults everyone's ears at once.

I want to hear /seacats/ opinion about this.

Do you believe Ryukishi07 deeply believes in what he writes? Or is he just a guy who purposefully crafts story in a manner to bait the reader into his themes?

Or is he writting that just because it fits the central theme of the sound novel?

Ryukishi shows different sides of what he believes in different works for the most part. With Higu he openly admits that it's a utopian fantasy, where trusting people and working together always works out. Higanbana is the counterpart to that in a lot of ways. It stylizes life into something horribly sinister, where anyone might be out to get you, and trusting people can often be the wrong choice. It even justifies the paranoia that was condemned in Higu to a point.
In Umineko his philosophy seems to come together, with love in all of its different forms, a more comprehensive look at the good and bad sides of relationships and the concept of truth as its center pieces.

I think another indication of this is that the "tools" he gives his readers for dealing with life are more overtly philosophical in Umi. You get the feeling that it's aimed at people you'd consider contributing members of society who think that they have life figured out, rather than outsiders who have trouble fitting in.
Higurashi has "Trust the people you are close to. Don't do stupid things by yourself.", Higanbana has "Don't kill yourself pls. Life is full of possibilities, even if you can't see them now.", Umineko has catbox truth and "without love it can't be seen". Whereas the first two are pretty uncontroversial to your average normalfag, the idea that there are instances where you can and should accept multiple contradicting truths at the same time, and that you need to look at your enemies with love (hello Jesus) is something that is pretty widely rejected, at least on an emotional level, even by "functioning" adults.

By the way, regarding the Erika prequel idea that came up recently. The anon who expressed interest in that never got back to me so I'm gonna start on it myself. Anyone who wants to participate is more than welcome. I think I have a decent outline for the major character constellations and the overall plot, but I'm pretty green when it comes to constructing the mystery aspect of detective fiction, so it'd be great to have someone to bounce ideas off of.

>Do you believe Ryukishi07 deeply believes in what he writes?
What dfo you mean.

>Without love, it cannot be seen."
Absolutely. That line is the main theme of Umineko.

Love is simply valuating something in your hierarchy of values that you deem to be selfishly important, either because it tells you something about existence, you enjoyed yourself in its company or it helps you survive. The higher something is in your hierarchy of values, the more you love it. For example, say that you love person X but love money more, then you wouldn't spend all your money to save that person from cancer or whatever because you never really highly valued them. If you do love them more than basically anything, you would throw away everything you have because that love is high in your hierarchy of values. If you value something lower in your hierarchy of values yet sacrifice something higher in your hierarchy, then that would be a contradiction of terms. If you love someone very much in your hierarchy of values yet aren't willing to sacrifice everything lower in your hierarchy of value for it, then it shows that you don't love it.

This is similar to Umineko. If you do not value anything, you cannot see any good traits it might have. You see this about most people who go on rants about how the phrase ''without love it cannot be seen'' as a criticism for why Umineko is shit without mentioning any positive attribute. Apathy is the dismissal of something being important and Nihilism not having any hierarchy of values or a self to form hierarchies.

Similarly, Erika says the opposite, that with love you start to imagine things which is also true. When you're in love with something, you tend to love it so much that you tend to have an over evaluate of it and then to love the idealized notion rather than the reality with all its flaws. Shakespeare was big on this and it's not really surprising that Ryukishi keeps referencing Romeo and Juliette. There are countless sonnets and instances where Shakespeare finds people who love the true person rather than the passionate idealized versions and this more describes the folly of love more than love itself.

Ryukishi saying that without love it cannot be seen, and that if you've decided that you hate something, you won't see anything good in the opposite viewpoint. Ange has no love for Eva, so she can't see anything else.
It has nothing to do with magic but heart and biases. How many times have you argued on 4chan or on the internet about something, and the person wouldn't see your point because of how much unfounded hatred they had for your position or the thing you like? Like some piece of media.

For people who are very vocal about Umineko being shit. You'll notice that one of the thing they bring up constantly is only the negatives; what they didn't like or pissed them off. Never going in the middle to find a common ground to indulge the idea of the other side. People only see one truth, their truth, and the people who also accept their version of the truth, and nothing else. This is the flaw of humans. We seek the truth but we cannot even agree with each other on which truth is the correct one.
Have you ever argued with someone and had a vicious smirk that you knew the other person was such an idiot for having that opinion or taste? That complete dismissal look of superiority. It's honestly the worst aspect of humanity. It reminds me of the quote by Nietzsche
>The man of knowledge must be able not only to love his enemies but also to hate his friends
Except that most people tend to never love their enemies or hate their friends.

Don't hate people. Don't look down on position you deem inferior. Just pick the correct position you think is right and be open to opinions.

Personally, it's a core message that I love about Umineko. This is the cold truth of humans. We are too tribal to be open to opinions but we try. We just fucking try. All this endless arguing for nothing when we all just want to be happy and find the truth. But we have to sneer at others who see the truth differently.
It's just sad.

The problem stems from our inability to properly communicate ourselves to others. Small semantics and dissuasion brings more argumentation than progress. It reminds me of a parable that I can't remember the name where a bunch of guys find a vase in the middle of the desert. They can only see through the cracks and a few can touch. One sees that it's a rope. The other feels that it's hairy. Another feels that it's rough like a rock. Another feels that it's wet. It's an elephant. Everyone is correct but no one is right.

Thanks for the suggestions, The Tokyo Zodiac Murders sounds interesting. I read And There Were None after finishing the question arcs, and it was pretty astonishing how limited the information it gave to the reader was in comparison to Umineko. I guess the trick to writing a successful mstery may have more to do with giving the right amount of clues and misleading the reader into a mindset that will block them from seeing the answer that's staring them in the face than coming up with an extraordinary solution. Murder On The Orient Express is a great example of this as well. The solution is simple, but not in the scope of what you would normally consider.

Once the basic methods are widely know that just means that riddlemaking and solving shift to the next level, right?

"Changing the time the crime was committed to make it seem impossible" is a method that will be recycled time and time again, but someone who simply points out that this trick must have been the one that was used by the criminal hasn't solved anything. The thing you need to reason out is who the criminal is and how they went about creating the conditions that made that kind of trick possible in the first place. You could even create a mystery by making the conditions for those conditions seem impossible. At that point there should be an insane number of possibilities.

For example, if your solution is that the doctor announced a false time of death the true mystery revolves around figuring out who might have the ability to do that and how. It unfolds into a second mystery in a way.

Why was it crucial for the massacre that Battler appeared in 1986? Lion was already crowned as the golden witch in 1984, give or take one year doesn't seem to change much. Shannon could've married George either way since Battler obviously didn't care, and him appearing in 1985 would've only added fuel for Beatrice to choose Battler and do everything in similar fashion. Or was it simply the height of mental illness at that time and couldn't choose between the three?

Ange ends up being filthy rich and free to escape her pursuers and live a fulfilling life in the Trick ending, while she gives up all her money to the Sumaderas and lives a mediocre life in the Magic ending just to get two glimpses at an old amnesiac Battler tens of years later. Battler should not have given a miracle just to make the ending a little happier.) but it's pretty clear that unlike in the trick ending she is able to find a new meaning in life.

As for less anime? Certainly there are some parts I can think of.
Perhaps in Ep 4 in Kuwadorian tunnel with Kraus vs Goat punch multipliers?
Thats honestly the only scene I can think of can you name a few more?
Also I deem the fights in Umineko a valid part of the book. If one just came to wank to a meta world discussion, I'd pretty much say go for it. But the fights are supposed to bring chaoticness and to excite you from sometimes dull pacing. I believe they have their rightful place in the sound novel, and in event of becoming a school mandatory literature, should not be changed.

So close!

Some things came up in the chutuluh discussion. For instance, the sisters of purgatory being scantily clad anime chicks is pure fanservice on r07s part. Battler trying to grope Jessicas and later Shannons boobs (I know he's just being awkward) is also way too anime for any regular person to be able to read it without cringing.

One other thing. While it doesn't have anything to do with anime, I think scrapping land and delaying Virgilius appearance until episode 5 was another decision that brought Uminekos quality down if only a bit. Battler was supposed to be caught between Beatrice trying to get him to admit that witches exist and Virgilius tempting him to abandon his belief in his family. A lot of people did not understand emotionally why Battler did not want to suspect his family because the antagonist with whom he could have argued about that was missing. Improvizing and introducing a tutorial character to make the "game" easier for the readers ultimately hurt the character dynamic too much for it to be a viable alternative storytelling-wise.

I don't understand why would anyone mind this tiny little bit of fanservice in this otherwise self-contained medium length sound novel?
It doesn't really take away anything from it, and more power to Ryukishi for making a creative designs that you can sympathize with.
Once again, I would say that in this otherwise big sound novel, anyone saying that its cringey or weeaboo is probably nitpicking at the works little charms.
>Shakespeare's Hamlet is written in too archaic english, it cannot be read and appreciated! (especially by Japanese)

This work was made in 16th century, written in the archaic English, along with the culture surrounding it at that time.
Why shouldn't Umineko be written in Japanese (partly irelevant) and with the culture surrounding it and still be considered classic literature?
My reasoning may be off, but I only think that little things like that can only add to the work rather than detract from it.

Also introducing Virgilia is fine as it is. Ep 2, and I still didn't fully understand how this META world works and I think a lot of readers weren't adjusted to it and Virgilia help them do just that.
>Battler was supposed to be caught between Beatrice trying to get him to admit that witches exist and Virgilius tempting him to abandon his belief in his family. A lot of people did not understand emotionally why Battler did not want to suspect his family...

This can only really be seen on a re-read. Honestly, you are still trying to grasp by that point. Red truth, the mystic fights, witches, furniture. Much like Battler, I was pretty lost in the chaos that was going on, relying entirely on Battler who was also lost, Beato and Virgilia to make sense of things for me.

Hey, you asked why it wasn't mandatory reading in schools. If you want your work to be recognized as high-culture you can't do this kind of thing.

>This can only really be seen on a re-read.
It would have made episode 3 more disorienting, but I think having Virgilius show that an anti-magic solution is possible if you're willing to use twisted logic would have worked just as well to disspell the illusions people had about magic in the Umineko universe, and it's so much more thematically coherent. Virgilia always felt like a bit redundant as a character to me. Which is not to say that I hate her, it's just a kind of indifference.

>I'd pretty much say go for it. But the fights are supposed to bring chaoticness and to excite you from sometimes dull pacing.
No, it's more than that. Often, in detective fiction, you get bullshit unreliable narrators that only purposefully confuses the story. Like one of Christie's most famous novel. The only scenes you can rely on are usually the ones where the detective is present. So Ryukishi had a bold and brilliant idea: ''why not have shonen action scenes that hides what really happened instead of just bullshit?'' and it's just genius.

I remember reading some negative review on Umineko that had no love, and he described that the beginning of story, in the airport was pretty realistic on how family gatherings are. But then Eva goes full anime and does a karate kick at Rudolf's head.

But that's his style. Realistic and anime.
It's what makes him charming. You kinda have to be into anime to like his stuff in the first place.

MYSTERY TIME

Just a short mystery this weekend.
Krauss has built a large swimming pool on Rokkenjima, complete with gym, changing rooms and showers.
In a bout of fanservice, Erika, Jessica, Maria and Shannon have some fun in the pool. Afterwards, they go to the shower room.

This shower room is very elaborately designed. Four showers adjacent to each other, divided by a wall between each one, though you can see the feet of the person in the next cubicle by a small opening. A shower curtain is provided so the girls can have some privacy while showering.
At one end of the room is Kumasawa doing some laundry, in clear view of all four cubicles.

Erika, Jessica, Maria and Shannon all get in the showers at the same time. They close the curtains behind them. Kumasawa looks on from her desk while folding towels.

Jessica's arm suddenly breaks through the curtain.
"Kumasawa-san, there's no soap in my cubicle. Could you hand me some?"
Kumasawa seems taken aback, she says she was sure she stocked soap in every cubicle that very morning, though this wasn't the first time her forgetfulness got her into trouble. She grabs a soap bar from her table anyway, walks over to Jessica's cubicle and hands it to her through the curtain, then turns around and walks back to her desk to do some more laundry.

At this moment, Erika is washing her luscious hair and rubbing her fluctuatingly-sized breasts when she sees drops of blood from the cubicle next to hers, Jessica's. Erika opens her curtain and then opens Jessica's. Jessica stumbles out, naked, covered in blood, a knife in her back.

Who stabbed Jessica?

I'm assuming
>Erika, Jessica, Maria and Shannon
doesn't mean Maria is next to Jessica:
Shannon hid a knife on a certain soap bar before the crime and placed it on the cubicle she would later use and Kumasawa forgot one cubicle already had one bar
Then she ducked and entered Jessica's cubice through the gap, SOMEHOW killed her making no noise at all, faked Jessica's voice to get another soap bar, went back to her cubicle, used the soap bar that had the knife inside to get rid of the blood on her body and getting rid of the soap bar and finally used the bar Kumasawa gave her to hide the fact she destroyed a soap bar

Shannon killed Jessica.
Assuming that Erika is the detective, the answer is simple. Someone took the soap from where Jessica was to shower. The killer knew that Kumasawa would be looking if she sneaked in, so she waited for Jessica to ask for soap. When Kumasawa was distracted, the killer got out of their shower, stabbed Jessica and stayed in the shower waiting for Kumasawa. The killer takes the soap, waits for Kumasawa to turn around and walk away, then goes back to her own shower.

The killer could not have been Erika, assuming she's the detective and the narration is not lying when she notices the blood.
The killer could not have been Maria as she's rather small, and not as tall as Jessica.

Thus, Shannon is the culprit.

Couldn't Kumasawa be the killer? After all, no one else was able to witness if she was handing over a bar of soap or depositing her knife into Jessica's back.

Assuming that she really did hand the soap, would anything be stopping the killer from removed or altered in anyway. Hence, the weapon could be concealed in any bar of soap.
I'd say that it's a suicide. Jessica was the one to remove her bar of soap, and hid a knife inside the bar of soap on the desk.
As soon as she received it from Kumasawa, she removed the weapon and stabbed herself in the back. If she couldn't reach, there's no reason why she wouldn't be able to prop it against the wall in some fashion.

Perhaps Jessica was stabbed before she walked into the shower? She left the shower to search for a bar of soap and was stabbed by the killer. She walked back into the room after being fatally wounded.

This always happens. I devise what I think is a complex mystery and it gets solved in two posts. Then I post a short mystery like this which I expect to be solved easily and all of /seacats/ gets up in arms trying to solve it.
I don't mind it, I'm having lots of fun. I do wish someone else would make a mystery though. It'd be fun to be the player, not the GM.

She entered the shower to steal Jessica's soap and placed it on her desk
This gave her an excuse to get close to Jessica's shower and kill her after handing her the soap

Either Maria and Shannon can stab her. Once the soap was handed to her, the killer would be able to sneak out of their shower, stab her from outside the shower cubicle and then quickly return.
Maybe Shannon is more likely as she's older, and thus has longer arms.

There's dozens of tropes though. I use those, twist them, create an original scenario and see /seacats/ try and solve it.

To be honest I'd be able to post a lot more mysteries if I didn't have to set them in Umineko-land. Some of you might have noticed I've taken some liberties lately like communal showers in this mystery. There's a really good one I've been working on but it just doesn't fit the Umineko setting and characters at all. There's only so much you can do on an isolated island setting.
Expect a shitty aeroplane setting where everyone's off to Hawaii or something in a few months time when I've run out of ideas.

CONGRATULATIONS!

You've basically gotten the gist of it.
It was Maria who stabbed Jessica.

Earlier that day, Maria got rid of the soap in Jessica's cubicle. She made sure to shower next to Jessica after the swimming session.
When Jessica asked for soap, Kumasawa left her desk and handed her the soap.

This was the moment. Kumasawa had a full view of the four showers from her desk. But once she handed the soap to Jessica and walked back to her desk, there was a slight moment where Kumasawa had her back turned to all the showers.
With the sound of four showers running, she did not hear how Maria opened her curtain slightly, then opened Jessica's and stabbed her once, thoroughly in the back.
By the time Kumasawa sat back down at her desk, Erika had noticed the bloodstains.

The entire clue of this mystery was how could someone stab someone in the cubicles while Kumasawa was watching? It's because Kumasawa had her back turned for just 10-15 seconds after she handed the soap to Jessica and before she sat back down.
Maria had concealed her blade, and used these precious seconds to stab Jessica. She opened Jessica's curtain and stabbed her swiftly in the back.

I'm more of a howdunit man than a whydunit, but I suppose if you really want a motive, let's say it was breast envy.

Anyway congrats for solving it man!

>>16661585
Kumasawa was a completely innocent red herring. Refusing to say anything about her made the game more exciting. Stating in RED that she had nothing to do with the actual murder would've been too easy. It was all about the various characters' positions at the time of the murder.

Stop telling yourself that. Try.
Make up a locked room. Then figure out how it could be done. Did the killer escape? Is the killer still in there? Did the victim commit suicide? Was the murder witnessed by many, but was it simply an illusion. The possibilities are endless!

If you're committed to this, grab a pen and paper and start brainstorming. It's how I started.
I'm not forcing you, I'm perfectly happy to provide my own mysteries, but I hate hearing people say they don't have the skill. Hone it, like I did. And I'm still miles upon fucking miles away from getting something actually published. I'm a fucking amateur. And so are you. So start writing.

Those are some great ones. Orient Express is a classic.
You'll have lots of fun the Mystery of the Yellow Room.

Rue Morgue gets a lot of credit for being the first locked-room mystery with a Sherlock/Watson-type duo solving it and I get that. It truly inspired the genre of murder mysteries and even inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write Sherlock Holmes.
That said, I thought the solution to the mystery was absolutely ridiculous and downright poor.
Poe also wrote The Purloined Letter, which doesn't involve a murder, but is still a fun mystery you ought to check out.
