If you look at the current top 10, you have 5 player characters (counting Aya in for that). But also 5 characters from EoSD (if you count Reimu and Marisa in). EoSD is by far the most popular one, riding on the strongest of nostalgia, U.N. Owen and Septette are by far the most popular songs. But then you have Koishi and Satori in the top 10. What do these two have in common with the scarlet sisters? They are sister pairs, lolis and have an interlocked story that is ideal and super easy to make doujins about. There isn't even that much canon material on Satori and Flandre. The sister boost and easy to make stories I think are very strong in my opinion. Flandre and Koishi are ideal secondary bait.

You won't find all the episodes on the same channel. The translation started on one, then continued thanks to the effort of another guy and now it's on that KKHTA channel. You'll have to do a bit of work (some also had the age restriction thing: if you want to watch them without logging in, you'll have to use some site to bypass it) and I'm pretty sure some episodes did in fact get taken down.
Also, the first episodes are quite boring. Yes, they're the most iconic for people who don't watch the whole thing, but the actual story starts...I'd say after they reveal the villains. I still suggest you to watch them, but don't expect anything noteworthy aside from gore.

Nah, the author always puts a disclaimer about how this is non-canon and suggests the viewer to immediately close the tab if they think this might ruin their perception of Gensokyo. About the new 2hus, there's also the fact that the series started years ago, so the new characters could potentially ruin the balance of the story he has already planned.
