This thread is for the discussion and learning of Japanese with raw otaku media.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, we recommend heading over to /int/'s 日本語スレッド.
Please use sage. This isn't /a/ or /int/, you don't have to keep bumping the thread all the time for no reason.

Let's have a nice thread by reporting and ignoring off-topic posts.

Speaking of VNs, what are good old VNs that would run smoothly on an old computer and that I could still hook using ITHVNR?

Newer VNs tend to make my computer heat up pretty badly, especially with ITHVNR and Firefox open to mine directly off it. はなひらっ as an example straight up heats up my computer to 85°c for some reason. Might be because it'd poorly made though, I don't know.

What do you all do to remember kanji exactly? I'm just using the core2k deck, but looking at the kanji and its meaning and clicking on to the next flashcard just isn't working. I'm really struggling to retain information, and I feel like I'm ending each day remembering maybe one or two of the 20 kanji I was supposed to remember, and not doing particularly well on the reviews either. Because they don't care about anything but themselves. This kind of person is the lowest, they create irregularities to avoid tackling a simple issue and it snowballs into branches and corruptions and overlapping information.

That's why we have so many video and encode types, aspect ratios, even pixel formats. That's why we can't agree on audio formats, colorspaces, character encoding. That's why the US still uses the Imperial System and calendars are gregorian instead of decimal.

I think you';re right, I just need to stick at it longer. It's more frustrating then I expected however, especially considering I often can't think of a mnemonic device for many of the Kanji. When I see the difference between, say, the number 8, and eight days in a month, and then 8 items, there seems to be no real rhyme or reason, no simple structure for converting the number into the number of days in a month, while one number has one suffix added, another number changes entirely. Just have to grind it out, I suppose. If a month passes and I'm still not retaining properly I will switch to individual study.

Too bad that I'm browsing /jp/ for years now and I'm totally fine with DJT on /jp/.
In fact there have been many threads regarding learning Japanese and even about anki in the past.

DJT on /jp/ stays rather isolated and doesn't shit up the board any more than crossboarders did over the last couple of years anyway.

Now the DJT on /int/ on the other hand is the most cancerous general I've seen in a while, people blogpost, use discord, are fucking newfags and one of them seriously posted his nip learning blog in the last thread.

Any Kindle works I think, but maybe not the older ones. For reading German I had to buy a German-English dictionary, but I think there was a free Japanese-English one. The dictionary is not as good as Rikaisama. It is missing words and sometimes it parses things wrong and I actually can't look up the word that I want to. You also have the option to use Bing Translate, which works well for German but is shit for Japanese.

It works really well sometimes, but other times the Kindle feels really slow and takes forever to bring up definitions or change the selected text. Restarting it usually fixes the problem, but I don't think I should have to do that. Overall, it is pretty nice.

The boring, fastest and most effecient way.
Learning Kana > learning writing of kanji > learning vocabulary(anki) and grammar > reading and mining

I started Kanji etymology and Grammar over at /int/ DJT. You can view the previous lessons here http://learnjapanesethehardway.blogspot.com.au/

Adjectival Nouns #4

Previous lesson review:

綺麗な庭 きれいなにわ a beautiful garden
健康な子ども けんこうなこども a healthy child
無茶な話し むちゃなはなし an unreasonable story
本当の話し ほんとうのはなし a true story
公の事実 おおやけのじじつ a public fact
ピカピカの靴 ピカピカのくつ shiny shoes
平等な立場 びょうどうなたちば equal footing
平等の権利 びょうどうのけんり equal rights

Today's lesson

Adjectival nouns used as noun modifiers

無駄な出費 むだなしゅっぴ wasteful expenses
デリケートな肌 デリケートなはだ delicate skin
パサパサの髪 パサパサのかみ dry hair

無駄・ムダ means useless, pointless, futile. We covered 無・ム in the last lesson. 駄・だ pack horse is comprised of 馬・バ horse and 太・タイ fat, plump, thick. 馬 うま is a pictograph of a horse. You got the little legs at the bottom and the lines across the top represent ribs (which you often see on horses). 太・タイ uses the phonetic of 大・ダイ with the ヽ suggesting thickness. We learned last lesson that 無 means nothing, this kanji 無駄 shows that the 駄 pack horses are laden with 無 nothing, which is 無駄 pointless.

Before I move on, I should mention the different types of kanji. This is important for understanding kanji etymology.

Shoukei characters are pictographic images of an object they represent, for example 木 キ looks like a tree.
Shiji characters are ideographic images, they graphically represent an abstract concept, for example 上 ショウ is up.
Kaii characters are compound ideographic images, they are a combination of pictographs that combine to create meaning, for example 休 キョウ is a person resting underneath a tree and means rest or respite.
Keisei characters are radical-phonetic compounds and are the largest category. You know how we were talking about figuring out pronunciation from the radicals, these kanji will use a radical at the top or left of the kanji to describe the general category of its meaning the other radical at the right or bottom approximates the pronunciation. The issue with these is that the pronunciation is vaguely similar to Chinese and the kun'yomi is often completely unrelated. This is why I advocate learning on'yomi, or Chinese readings first, because the majority of kanji you will encounter will be compounds. Kun'yomi or Japanese words need to be learned by rote, one way or another, but can be picked up as you learn.

There are two other types of Kanji, Tenchuu and Kasha characters, but they are more complex and outside the scope of the current lessons. Needless to say, the majority of kanji will fall under one of the four groups previously listed. The reason this is important is because when you are trying to figure out new kanji you need to place them in one of the groups. In general you won't be able to figure out readings of Shoukei and Shiji characters, but having a core foundation of kanji on'yomi readings will allow you to read almost 90% of Kaii and Keisei characters (or approximate the sounds).

Cont'd.

出費 シュッピ expenses is comprised of 出 シュツ exit and 費 ヒ expense. 出 シュツ is a pictogram of a 艸 plant sprouting out of the 土 earth, and is used to describe something coming out or leaving. Can also refer to protruding or putting out. 費 ヒ is comprised of 弗 フシ dollar/flourine and 貝 バイ shell. The etymology of 弗 is obscure, it is made up of 弓 キュウ and two lines to depict stringing a bow, as opposed to 引 ヒク which is pulling a bow. The dollar connotation is archaic, but useful in this sense. As explained before 貝 refers to shells, which were once used as currency. For this kanji you can thick of 弗 dollars and 貝 shells (as opposed to cents) can be 費 spent or expended. A good way to think of 出費 is outgoing expenses.

無駄な出費 wasteful/pointless (outgoing) expenses

デリケート is from the English, delicate and is used in the same sense. You will often hear デリケートな子ども, referring to a fragile child. 肌 ハダ is an interesting one. Although 月・ツキ refers to the moon and is used as such as a radical, the kanji for 肉・ニク is has the identical radical. This 几・キ radical means table, but can also mean enclosure or surrounding. From these radicals we get the 肉 flesh that 几 surrounds, or in other words the 肌 skin.

デリケートな肌 delicate skin

パサパサ is an onomatopoeia. I like to think of patting down my hair with a towel and hearing the gentle patt patt sound, which in Japanese sounds more like pasa pasa. 髪・カミ means hair and is made up of 髟・ヒュウ mane, long hair and 夂・チ winter radical, separated by 一. In the 夂 winter, some animals grow 長 long 彡fur, which looks like 髪 hair.

パサパサの髪 dry hair

That's all for today, tune in tomorrow for another lesson.

Because it doesn't "just" mean that. It doesn't "just" mean engrossed. There is no way you can construe the way it's used to mean that.

Do you realize you are using words you have no idea of what they mean? You can be an otaku of movies, games and even fucking trains.

オタク(おたく)とは、自分の好きな事柄や興味のある分野に、極端に傾倒する人を指す呼称。 アニメ、漫画、玩具、映画、コスプレ、ゲーム、アイドル……。 さまざまな大衆文化があるが、そのような特定の趣味の対象および分野の愛好者、ファンを指す語として使われる。

>No, the fact that you can write something like "all sorts of otaku" shows that you don't know how the word works at all.

Otaku is someone who is overly knowledgeable/addicted on a certain thing. It is not something that is exclusive to anime.

Anime otaku
VN otaku
Jdrama otaku
History otaku
Suiri otaku

Yes, anon. When you add those funny "flavor" words, it actually dramatically changes the meaning of what you write. Not just in terms of tone, but also where you're coming from and what the text literally means. When something "just" means something, that's that. Having specific VNs on it is super retarded because it makes people think "I have to read this".

What would be better is to make a list of AUTHORS to not read until you are somewhat confident in what you're doing, and the latter two of that last (Urobuchi, Narahara) would go onto that. Other than that whether you pick Majikoi, Fureraba or some other random ass moege is completely and utterly irrelevant.

You're not wrong.

That would be very nice, but it's not particularly tenable. Even if you divide authors up into "beginner-friendly" and "beginner-hostile" types, there's still a huge gap in terms of comprehensibility in what's within each category. Something like tsukihime is mildly beginner-hostile, but still very easy to comprehend if you know a certain small number of non-beginner grammar points and have a texthooker. You're on to something, but until you find a way to make it work out in practice, I think the shitty and slightly misleading way of listing particular popular VNs is more useful.

To be honest I think there are only two difficulty levels. Most VN/LN writers use a straightforward style, but then there are a handful who are actively trying to write good prose (Romeo, Masada, Mareni, most other prominent chuunige writers).

In my opinion, if someone were to make a recommendation chart, they should pick some VNs from the aforementioned simpler style, and sort them by genre so that beginners can pick something that will hold their interest.

は marks topic
が marks subject

If you have both of them in a sentence, perhaps it's best to think of はas "setting the scene", while が actually communicates the idea itself.

夏は日が長いです
On the topic of summer, the days are long.
(Nuance: By contrast, summer days are not short.)

夏が日は長いです

You seem to not understand that for about a dozen autists policing /jp/'s DJT, discussing japanese language learning has become off-topic. On DJT of all places for fuck's sake.

The shitposting is from these few autists (the core of this DJT) baiting other autists to come shitpost here through their hostility. The post quality will never go up contrary to what you believe.

The /int/ DJT is way more on topic, and less restrictive than here. There's also less shit-flinging over there. If the quality posters from /jp/'s DJT migrate to /int/'s DJT, it would strongly resemble what we had on /a/, and we can simply leave the shit-flinging and flag posting autists on /jp/ where they will rot away at a dozen posts per day.

Also, this very thread shows quite clearly that some posters wish to have a quality discussion about learning japanese and not the constant shit they have to put up with here. That's why I invite them to the /int/ DJT, which is more civil and on topic like what DJT used to be and was meant to be.

The things you enjoyed in these threads, they're all in the other thread. You don't need to come over here and shitpost to try and drive new blood to that thread, and people are rightfully shitting on you for doing so.

Why can't you just fuck off instead of staying in a thread where you don't like any of the posters, and you aren't interested in the topic?

And that autism you have is also despised by /jp/ locals. If you came from /a/'s DJT, you are as much a tourist on this board as me and we should simply focus on bettering DJT like we did on /a/.

If you're not from /a/'s DJT, then why are you so intent on policing what the content of DJT should be and what is off-topic, going so far as to shoo away people over to /int/? Are you simply a /jp/ local shitting on DJT because you dislike the thread's presence on this board?

Daily Reminder: Don't argue with retards.

Every post spent replying to an /int/ mouthbreather is wasted time you could've used to learn Japanese.

Have you ever thought that maybe multiple people are reporting your garbage meta posts or something?

The only reason anyone is even responding to your retarded ass right now is because we're on page 9 anyway.

Nobody wants you here. You're not contributing anything, you're just shitting up the thread. Please get permabanned from /jp/.

>> No.16369228 [DELETED]

>>16369191
I'm not talking about the reporting of metaposting, I'm talking about people (the dozen autists on here claiming to be the masters of what DJT is supposed to be) reporting or sending to /int/ anyone that isn't in line with what is considered "on-topic". It has degenerated to a point where people get shit on for discussing learning the japanese language, which is what the essence of DJT was. This policing has simply made this a copy of the VN and manga threads which already exist, and that's if you disregard the shitposts which claim to "healthfully self-moderate" the thread.

I'm all for having DJT on /jp/ as well as on /int/, but a few people are really turning this thread to shit, and then act all high and mighty about it. You're the people the mods should be taking care of, and not the few people who triggered your autism by having a disagreable posting style or some other non-important fucking detail.

This is an example of what’s known as a 吊り広告(つりこうこく) — a hanging (train) ad. The product in question is a can coffee (缶コーヒー), made by Boss, the same people who hire Tommy Lee Jones.

The picture features a rather typical-looking, semi-depressed, salaryman (冴えないサラリーマン), in an even more typical-looking, semi-depressing environment. No doubt a lot of the humor stems from the juxtaposition between the luxury message of the product and the decidedly unluxurious environment up with which our リーマン is putting…

* Linguistic note: Observe how, in Japanese, a single word can substitute for what would typically have to be a clause in English. Arguably, signs in every language are telegraphic, but this seems even more true in Japanese.
*
* In informal speech, you can often substitute a single adjective for what would have to a be a proper sentence in English. A lot of what would be one-liner jokes in English are one-worder jokes in Japanese.
