This thread is for the discussion and learning of Japanese with raw otaku media.
If you have no interest in otaku media we recommend heading over to /int/'s 日本語スレッド.
Please use sage. This isn't /a/ or /int/, you don't have to keep bumping the thread all the time for no reason.

Let's have a nice thread by reporting and ignoring off-topic posts.

What would be the best way to say "Would you like me to take your photo?"?
I'd just like to know because I'd rather not seem anyone fidgeting cluelessly over a photo if I end up going to Japan again. I would assume "写真を撮ってあげますか" to be it, but I'm not sure.
Also, is there any better way to ask where a place is? My friend told me everyone says "どこですか", but is there something just as/more commonly used with a closer meaning to "Do you know where" something is?

My ten of dreams turned inside out.
Happy times turn to dust
My words frozen in a machine

knock knock knock, embrace the silence
punching the wall
I had something important to say but it never came out
knock knock knock, embrace the dark starry sky
lost in the void of space
Welcome to loneliness.

In our town sunk to the bottom of the sea,
your smile fades away in the trees.
I can speak only of regret
like a game, destroy the light

knock knock knock, dreams of heartbreak overflow
my mouth, my ears my eyes are overflowing
putting endless anime into my brain
knockn kocnk kocnk because of the lack of gravity
floating like a wooden doll
welcome to loneliness

Ignore those idiots, Flyable Heart is a masterpiece. They just dropped it 5 minutes in because it was too hard for them and have to justify it somehow.

Anyway there's no plot-enforced recommended reading order, the routes are sufficiently disjoint you can read them in whatever order you choose, so what's important is what you'll enjoy the most. Personally I think this means Yui route first because it's the best.

Now I can read it pretty much fluently so it doesn't bother me as much though. Vol. 2, 4, 5 & 6 are all in good quality but 3 is the same as 1 sadly.

I'm transcribing it as I'm reading, I'm planning on doing it for the whole volume, so unless someone shares good scans until then I might share it with DJT.

Hey just started with hiragana. Using Heisig Method - Remembering the Kana. I'm following the guidelines or "lessons" in the order that they're given and I've got three questions about it:

1) The author says that the learning order isn't the dictionary learning order and that the order that he proposes - the one where I'm going back and forth like a choose-your-own-adventure book - it supposed to help me remember better or learn faster... or something. Problem is that his cutesy texts to attach random as fuck meanings to help remember are 100% useless to me since my brain doesn't work that way. Am I going to get fucked down the line if I don't memorize it his way or can I just learn it my way and not worry about it down the road?

2) Is the actual learning order important? Since the author says the way he wrote the book is out of order, will I just have to relearn the order eventually? AKA am I better off doing it "alphabetically" right off the bat so I don't waste time?

3) Does this book contain errors? I'm on lesson 4 right now and he has a little test to see if I can remember some of the syllables:

よいま
リなね
たに

Problem is, as far as I can tell, he has not covered ねyet and I'm wondering if I skipped a step or if the author is just dumb? I tend to skip over stuff when I read/learn, so I want to make sure I'm not fucking up so I don't have problems down the line.

I can't offer any advice on Remembering the Kana's contents, but honestly, I think you're wasting your time. If you just bruteforce it through realkana (or whatever people use nowadays) and writing it down a bunch of times, you can get kana out of the way in a day or two. No need for mnemonics or anything like that because you will see kana literally all the fucking time. It's pretty much impossible to forget them.

アスカ、我々のは料理の本を勉強するは難しい。
"Asuka is having a hard time studying our cookbook."
Right? I don't have any friends. I'm a lonely r9k robot and so I have to rely on Google Translate for grammatical practice. Thought I'd take this one to you guys because Goog's saying it's grammatically wrong. Don't see how though. It's directly stated that the book belongs to the group, and that Asuka is finding studying the book to be difficult.

アスカ(Maybe ha should be here instead of separated by just a comma?)、我々のは(Topic/Poss.)料理の本(Cookbook, noun)を勉強する(Action, studying the book present tense.)は難しい(Maybe a ha shouldn't go here?)。

That's wrong. 我々のは means 我々の[omitted] is the topic. I would assume the omitted part is アスカ, as in "Our Asuka/Asuka, a member of our group".

Use Chiitrans Lite, it works with pretty much everything and you can turn on furigana for maximum lazy mode. My only issue with it is how janky the hover info is, but I've found that in every fucking text hooker, because none of these cunts know how to program. If I move my mouse off the word, the box should disappear, retards. It doesn't need to stay there and block my view of the rest of the sentence.

For mining, I just copy out new words into a quick reply window, and then go through them all while mashing R at the end of my session.

>> No.16320020

Don't use a text hooker then. That's just a cheap and nasty trick.

Read them as a native would read them. If you truly get stuck on a word/kanji then look it up in jisho or similar.
Making it harder to cheat means you'll spend more time trying to figure out the meaning naturally, and then have a greater commitment to remembering stuff which will ultimately lead to much greater results.

Or rage quitting if you're a big baby.

Awful advice. All that time spent doing radical searches or whatever could have been spent reading. You only need a bit of self-restraint when using a texthooker ie. try to read and understand a sentence before hovering over any words. And in any case, you'll be mining unknown words so you have to memorise them eventually.

Inefficient. RTK just assigns English words to the symbols and even after you complete it you have 0 Japanese knowledge and can't read anything. Whereas with the vocab method you pick up words immediately, immerse yourself in content much earlier and can tell apart kanji by context (e.g. you learn 食堂 and 食事, ergo 食 is food related). No, it doesn't "doesn't matter". Isolated kanji study is by necessity isolated, and therefore you are delaying actually studying japanese. was looking for some advice on catching up with Japanese.

I took a japanese class that essentially followed genki I, but due to schedule conflicts I haven't been able to take second semester which covers genki II. I'll be taking second semester soon (it starts in three weeks), but I haven't practiced all too much. I remember all of both hiragana and katakana and, i just need refreshers on most other things.

I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion of which would be more advantageous, either:
-Going through genki I
-Going through Tae Kim's Guide
I feel I'll remember vocab as I go along and do some readings, it's mostly the grammar and kanji I need to go over again.

any suggestions on which I should dedicate myself to over the next few weeks?

Looks like ダサい indeed. The last character being in hiragana is normal. It's part of what's conjugated, so think of it like the い in 可愛い for instance.

ダルい

I'm disappointed you haven't called out on the "it's" misuse slip, but thank you.

I read a lot of books (mostly technical), but things stopped sticking after the Internet became ubiquitous, since my brain doesn't differentiate written input from the Internet and from books, making me doubt everything equally and shut the mindless absorption system I had when reading in my native language as a kid.

I guess my only way into this whole "feeling the language" thing would be having a conversation partner so I start to unconsciously acquire compound tenses and discernment when it comes to prepositions.

I also fear for Japanese in this regard, specially since it's not a language that's been looming around me from an early age.
On the other hand, nips have a higher literacy rate and there aren't as many "EJLs" collaborating with the linguistic gang-rape that happens in English.

My anki stats are a clusterfuck with many mistakes done in the past and a retention between 45-80% it also says I only did my reps 200/300 days.

I know I fucked up big time no excuses.

Vocabulary is just as important as most people think, actually. If you don't know the grammar of something you read but know the meaning of each word in the text, you can still get the gist of what the text is saying. You can't do the same knowing the grammar and not knowing the vocab.

It would be an incredibly vague gist though, you'd only know what the text was saying in simple sentences, anything above that and you'd barely be able to get any of it

You'd be able to guess vocab through context too if you knew grammar and just a few words

Ah yes I forgot they removed the listening sections from the JLPT, makes our lives that much easier

And even if the JLPT was reading only I doubt the average person would be able to reach N1 after two years just from two hours of reading a day, unless they were constantly reading material that was several levels higher than their current level and had huge amounts of motivation to stop the burn out

Firstly, reading does help with listening comprehension. Secondly, pretty much everyone here will be reading a lot of VNs. And most of all, the listening section of the JLPT is significantly easier than the reading.

>And even if the JLPT was reading only I doubt the average person would be able to reach N1 after two years just from two hours of reading a day, unless they were constantly reading material that was several levels higher than their current level and had huge amounts of motivation to stop the burn out

I said that they would be reading a lot more on the weekends. You must be a beginner if you're talking about 'burn out', because after you get over the initial hump, you'll be reading compelling content and actually enjoying the learning process.

Reading in general barely helps with listening comprehension, reading VNs obviously would, but you'd still want to at least do some listening only practice before doing the N1 otherwise you wouldn't do great at all, and if you just read shit like manga and LNs for 2 years and nothing else your listening comprehension would be at pretty much a complete beginner level

And I meant burn out from constantly having to read shit so far above your level, not just from reading in general, if you wanted to get good enough to pass the N1 after two years you'd constantly have to be one upping yourself and reading the hardest shit you could, otherwise you wouldn't progress fast enough
