I love how I've spent almost every night for several years reading VNs, dedicating my life to them, and yet I can look at a chart like this and realise I've only read 9 VNs on it. There's so much to read, it's glorious.

I keep missing days in Anki because I get discouraged when learning new words. Maybe my retention is shitty but learning new words is hard. I due reviews first so I can concentrate on new words by themselves but it burns me out so fast. That I end up turning new words off for like a week. It's like I'm learning 20 new words a week. Is there anything I can do to help with this?

What's the best way to build up vocab? I can understand spoken Japanese decently, and can understand children's shows like Precure very well, but I can barely understand the news because of how limited my vocabulary is. The normal thing to do if I were learning Spanish or something would just be to read academic papers and newspapers and build a vocabulary, except I barely know any kanji and I just started anki a few months ago. What is the best way to get my vocabulary up to being able to understand a college lecture? Is there a website with complex Japanese for adults that also has furigana? NHK easy is great but the vocabulary is quite limited.

Why do Japanese people use romaji input over kana-input anyway? You'd think it'd be twice as fast to type kana only pressing one key instead of two, surely the time-saving benefits make it superior? Their keyboards have kana on them, why wouldn't they use them?

Turns out the CV structure of japanese is very much compatible with the "strokes of fingerpresses" seen with romaji keyboards. Kana input is reasonable, but the characters to press are more in number and less friendly in physical distribution, making it so that it's essentially the same thing. Most time spent typing is spent making sure they select the right word conversions anyway.

If it's just a resolution upgrade I don't know how much it matters, I had no problem with the graphics in the version I read and the text (and the fantastic soundtrack) is the bulk of the work. Up to you though, there's plenty of other great VNs you can read instead.

Well, the characters 連用形 describe the form itself well. The problem is there's no good translation of them. 連体形 implies adnominal, 連用形 may imply adverbial, but adverbial already means something very very different than 連用形, so it doesn't fit.

I stopped learning because I was in the hospital and lost the motivation to continue. I've got my motivation back. But it hurts so much that I forgot so much. I used to be able to read without a dictionary but now I can't.

How far back do I need to go? Do you think it'll be fine if I just read with a dictionary and not do anki cards?

It just creates one card per reading. If you want multiple readings you can make multiple cards, or manually put the alternate readings on your card.
I don't think it comes up often enough to be a problem, normally you just need the most common reading for each word and in any other case it'll have furigana.

Which one? 300 would be ok for Baldr Sky if you are a beginner, but if you mean for every VN then yeah that's extremely slow. I'm about 3 times slower than the native speed, so if a VN is 20h I usually take about 60-70h.

When I was beginning I put example sentences for each point in Anki and consequently almost never had to consult back to the grammar guide. Most stuff you can just hover over with Rikaisama to get reminded until that's no longer necessary.

If you read the first half of tae kim 2 times you'll already know the basics.
If you feel overwhelmed just read 2-3 new pages a day and make sure you understand it, reread them on the next day + 2-3 new pages and so on.

You don't need to learn verb conjugations day one, but you should at least be able to recognize them or else you are fucked if you read 飲んだ think it's explanatory　の or something like that.

Try Memrise anon. I swear to god highly underatred, you can login on an app or desktop and get started and its free. Its customizable as fuck.

I recommend JLPT N2 Vocab(it goes over from JLPT N5-JLPT N2), Core+ Japanese Vocabulary and JLPT N5 Readings, that also show the normal hiragana and then Kanji and test on both. N5-N4 is considered basic Japanese.. Trust me when i say this though the best places to learn Vocab is video games.

I recommend Ni No Kuni for the PS3 if you know at least basic stuff like conjugations, Nominalization which is going to be pretty common in Japanese language. Hopefully my advice is taken. Because its a great alternative to those who do not want to build their decks with Anki and want a simpler way to do things.
