This thread is for the discussion and learning of Japanese with raw otaku media.
If you have no interest in otaku media we recommend heading over to /int/'s 日本語スレッド.
Please use sage. This isn't /a/ or /int/, you don't have to keep bumping the thread all the time for no reason.

Let's have a nice thread by reporting and ignoring off-topic posts.

Has the users in the thread gone down since the switch?

I keep missing days in Anki because I get discouraged when learning new words. Maybe my retention is shitty but learning new words is hard. I due reviews first so I can concentrate on new words by themselves but it burns me out so fast. That I end up turning new words off for like a week. It's like I'm learning 20 new words a week. Is there anything I can do to help with this?

What's the best way to build up vocab? I can understand spoken Japanese decently, and can understand children's shows like Precure very well, but I can barely understand the news because of how limited my vocabulary is. The normal thing to do if I were learning Spanish or something would just be to read academic papers and newspapers and build a vocabulary, except I barely know any kanji and I just started anki a few months ago. What is the best way to get my vocabulary up to being able to understand a college lecture? Is there a website with complex Japanese for adults that also has furigana? NHK easy is great but the vocabulary is quite limited.

You aren't expected to commit them completely to long term memory the first time around. That's not how anki works. The more you review and forget, the better you eventually remember them. 20 new cards a day is pretty average if you want to aim for that.

Interesting, I mean with my 5 a day, I can recognize them anywhere now and I've learned them pretty okay, but can you really learn if you are being bombarded with 100 cards a day? That sounds fucking hardcore.

>> No.16252684

20 is pretty average. If you do more than 20-30, your retention will go down but your overall ability to recognize words will go up. Like if you throw heaps of shit at a wall, some of it will stick and some won't. If you throw more, then more will stick, but more will not aswell. Kind of a weird analogy though.

Why do Japanese people use romaji input over kana-input anyway? You'd think it'd be twice as fast to type kana only pressing one key instead of two, surely the time-saving benefits make it superior? Their keyboards have kana on them, why wouldn't they use them?

>> No.16253124

>>16253119
Turns out the CV structure of japanese is very much compatible with the "strokes of fingerpresses" seen with romaji keyboards. Kana input is reasonable, but the characters to press are more in number and less friendly in physical distribution, making it so that it's essentially the same thing. Most time spent typing is spent making sure they select the right word conversions anyway.

the word omitted is ね,よ or ください

Try Memrise anon. I swear to god highly underatred, you can login on an app or desktop and get started and its free. Its customizable as fuck.

I recommend JLPT N2 Vocab(it goes over from JLPT N5-JLPT N2), Core+ Japanese Vocabulary and JLPT N5 Readings, that also show the normal hiragana and then Kanji and test on both. N5-N4 is considered basic Japanese.. Trust me when i say this though the best places to learn Vocab is video games.

I recommend Ni No Kuni for the PS3 if you know at least basic stuff like conjugations, Nominalization which is going to be pretty common in Japanese language. Hopefully my advice is taken. Because its a great alternative to those who do not want to build their decks with Anki and want a simpler way to do things.

Just look at the replies/posters stat for both threads. The /int/ DJT has a higher count of individual posters for the amount of replies.

I also want to add that I think it would be great for DJT to only be one thread on /int/ once again, as both threads are pretty slow sometimes and we could all be discussing about language learning peacefully no matter the medium used. The thread was better received on /int/ as opposed to heavily rejected on /jp/ and not even functional if it weren't for the mods being more active on here than /int/.

For the sake of DJT, it should be all for one and one for all.

Have you even read the /int/ thread? It's absolutely full of JLPT spam, political shitposts, people unironically posting crap like "stfu nigger", normalfag cancer, people unironically shitting on /jp/, etc.

That is absolutely nothing like the /a/ thread was. Even at its worst, the /a/ thread was at least full of people telling normalfags and off-topic racist posters to fuck off. It was never this bad.

The /jp/ thread is much closer in content to what the /a/ thread was when not being flooded by failed college students.

Same with the VN thread. This thread is almost completely unrelated to the VN thread. You clearly have not actually even read the VN thread.

Because trying to apply grammar concepts from other languages to japanese just doesn't fit a lot of the times. So you have to add a ton of extra rules to try and fix it.

Another problem is romaji. If you look at some sites/book trying to explain conjugating verbs, it's full of "drop these letters then add X, expect when the final letter is this, where you have to do that instead". If you look at the words in kana instead, you see that it's actually completely regular, and all those weird rules are just caused by the romanization.

You should do those side quests now/soon, you want to finish them before you end the game and the longer you wait the less appropriate they'll be for your level. They don't take long anyway. Also I recommend always emptying your love gauge asap, it reduces the likelihood of having to farm for it later.
You'll enjoy chapter 5, best chapter imo. Don't know how you're able to prioritise anime over it, when I read it I spend almost every waking moment playing the game.

It has it's moments, it's just that my reading is so slow that I can't really enjoy it that much, especially when I already see what kind of joke is coming but I'm still stuck trying to figure out what kind of slang they are using.

Didn't watch anime in quite a while cause I lack the time, did study grammar but need practice.

It's easily fixable though, just go to where you've mine words so far, select them all and copy them into another card type.

Make sure the fields match etc and it should be no problem.

In that case, it's probably not that you don't like Yotsuba/Hanahira, it's just you don't like reading slowly and looking stuff up all the time. So there's probably no need to switch texts, since no matter what you read you'll have that problem.
The best thing might be to just read stuff with a texthooker, so looking up stuff doesn't take so long.

I felt the same way, it was mostly painful even though Yotsuba is objectively great. Now at an intermediate level I enjoy reading in Japanese even when the content is objectively bad. It's just so satisfying.

Well something to look foward to I guess.

Do you remember at what point it became enjoyable, like how long or how much did you read until you could read at a reasonable pace.

Honestly I prefer DJT this way because it attracts less accidental posters.

All of Yotsuba and like half of Flyable Heart, Of course I was still shit and needed a texthooker, but it feels good because there's long sections of text you can breeze through.

As long as you read every day you'll reach that level eventually. I personally don't think slice & life are necessarily the way to go though, prioritize what motivates and interests you over "what looks easy".

What made me progress the most in the end were intermediate to advanced materials rather than the said easy things. I like slice & life but there's nothing really entrancing in them compared to plot driven stuff.

I'll agree about SoL manga where there's no overarching plot, but with your high school romance VNs you do get the development of the relationship and sex/love with the girls to look forward to, so they can be just as compelling as plot stuff.

I can imagine this; my comment was mostly referring to manga like Yotsubato, not moeges and the likes.

This is my interpretation;
The loneliness is a hometown of the people.
The love is a flower of the lives.
We have nothing but the love as the flower in our life even if it is boring

Problem with plot driven stuff is if you misunderstand a line it can completely throw off the entire story. Need to get good for that sort of pressure.

I've never had this happen, if a line is that important it usually becomes obvious from context if you've misunderstood it.
The main reason for avoiding plot driven stuff as a beginner is a lot of it uses complex sci-fi/fantasy vocab.

If you have your grammar down it shouldn't happen, unless you're reading some really advanced thing written by some someone who has a particular writing style... these sorts of things typically don't appear much unless you're purposely picking something really advanced.

As long as you got your grammar is down you simply rikai what you don't get, and if rikai doesn't help you use google.jp. You rarely ever need more than this

There are more than two.

Fune wo Amu
Flip Flappers
Hibike S2
Yuri on Ice
Girlish Number

If you want fun sport anime :
Keijo + Shakunetsu no Takkyuu Musume

Also you should still be watching the funniest anime made this past decade which is Saiki Kusuo no psy-nan.
