Just remember the common 1-han yaku and some 2-han like toi toi or 7pairs.

As for scoring, fu is retarded. I only remember the 30fu row and let the ai do the rest.

>> No.16097004

>>16096820
As the other anon said, the common ones are your priority. Their value and scoring isn't something you need to worry about too much unless you plan to play in person. The ai handles that part.

I had the most issues with distinguishing similar yaku like chanta and junchan, but once you've mastered the basics the rest comes naturally

You should close the hands next time.
I'd discard 6-man. It's safe against kamicha, and probably safe against toimen who looks like he's aiming for pinzu honitsu. It's not safe against the dealer, but I'd discard it over 3-man first because there is the chance small chance he could've gotten in tenpai for chanta sanshoku. If the 3-man passed again, I would prioritize defending against kamicha and toimen since the chance the dealer has a kuso hand is highly likely.

>>16124072
Discarding a tile that's safe against no one sounds like a great idea.

>>16124124
Just being honest though, I tend to not think too hard during a game. I probably would have noticed that toimen is doing something with pinzu but that 3p doesn't help so I'd risk it and hope it passes. If I somehow realized I should be defending I'd probably stick to cutting souzu starting with 6s.

Already have 2 shuntsu and 2 ryanmen so I only need to finish them and get a pair. So the only sensible discard choices are 79p and 79s.
If I want to keep my chances for an ikkitsukan I would discard the bamboo first because there is one tile less to complete it (discarded 6s). Plus pinzu is the dora's suit.
And I discard 9s because it's the less likely to become a pair as it was already discarded once.

Characters are the most dangerous tiles I think because he didn't discard any before his riichi.
Bamboo is not that safe either because he kept that 3-sou last, just before riichi so maybe he has a wait not far from it.
I guess Circles are the safest because his kan acts somewhat like a kabe and the fact that he threw that 7-pin earlier means he was settled on his 5-pin ankou otherwise he would have kept it ?

I believe it's actually because there are so many fucking yaku in the full list (that most people don't use here, they generally just agree on which ones count and the rules before they start playing) that actually getting a yakuless hand is an achievement in and of itself.
For example, any kan at all is a yaku. I believe a closed hand is a yaku, as is tsumo, as is a hell wait, or a fully opened hand, or three pons, or even a closed triplet of ANYTHING.
The han counts are insane though. Kokushi Musou is 64 han, iirc, and Tenhou is 168. Going for a lot of tiny hands isn't that great when you consider that winning ten times with a 1 han garbage hand is powerless in the face of a single honitsu.

Basically this
You CAN win with a garbage hand over and over, there's just very little incentive to because you're likely to get shitstomped in the one round out of sixteen you failed.
Also, flower and season tiles, which can either be a free yaku each or a metric shitton altogether (when they're set aside like bonuses) or wildcards that can be anything you need to complete a hand (which is bullshit).

Don't do this. This is /jp/, a board for Japanese culture, and specifically a thread therefore for Japanese Mahjong. However much you think it sounds stupid, it's true.
Games are games. There is no such thing as an inferior game as long as you're having fun, and certainly nothing as far as 'better for competitive play' - competitive play can be achieved at all levels as long as the game is sufficiently complex so you can't just memorize the best play, and everyone actually knows the rules.

The Chinese don't really have an equivalent of otaku and people who play mahjong are usually old guys anyway, or the rare college people who brought a set, so in any case /jp/ is probably not the place to talk about Chinese mahjong and definitely not the place to shill it.

The penalties for last place get progressively worse as you advance in ranks. I guess that 4dan is around the point where most people simply can't consistently make big points wins.

I imagine that a lot of people in 4dan are also aiming for tokujou, so simply playing a last place avoidance style could save you from losing points but not from losing R that you need to move forward properly. You have to seriously consider R balance alongside point balance, which I don't think most people do before 4dan.

>> No.16223376

Two things to note about 4dan in joukyuu.

>It takes 3 games minimum to make up one 4th place game.

>Most opponents at this point should have a lower R. This means R can bleed from losses, while gains may not make up as much.

At the same time, skill at 4dan also means the ability to beat a majority of players in joukyuu. That's how it should be and all up to the individual.
