I agree. I myself don't particularly like Rue Morgue but I can appreciate it for what it is and what it did. It started the whole trend of detective fiction. It started the locked room mystery genre, or, the howdunnit. It also started the whole "super smart detective with bumbling sidekick" thing we see in Sherlock Holmes and many other works.
I respect Poe a lot for what he did, but I'm glad other writers took the good stuff from his work and improved on the other things, like actual plausible and pleasing solutions.
The Purloined Letter was slightly better but still not that satisfying.

On the subject of other murder mysteries, is there anything you guys would recommend? I've already read Rim of the Pit and The Mystery of the Yellow Room, both of which were excellent. But I'm kinda stuck now, not knowing which mystery to tackle next.

Also, at risk of going off-topic here, any murder mystery fans should watch the BBC series Jonathan Creek. It hits all the right spots for locked room mysteries and impossible crimes. Can't recommend it enough.

Christie in general is pretty good. I haven't read one of hers I've disliked yet.
Styles, her first, is fun enough if you like poison. The victim was poisoned in a locked room and most of the clues are about how effective are certain poisons, where it could have been ingested, who had access to the food and drinks etc.

My favorite so far is Orient Express. Very colorful characters, they're all different nationalities so you have the gum chewing flippant American, loud overly friendly Italian, uptight Brit etc. And the culprit is very interesting. Specifically the way the culprit is handled by detective Poirot after is very interesting if you liked Umineko's morals.

I really should read more of her, the problem is that I've seen almost all adaptations of her works so I already know the answers. One of the reasons I loved the relatively recent Marple TV series where they took the original stories and changed things around a bit so the culprit and motive was different from the books but still fitted the characters.

I love Christie and I'll defend her to the end but one thing that does bother me about her works is the dull murders. It's usually poison or a gunshot or stabbing that kills the victims. I personally prefer a more gruesome murder in my muder mysteries. Then you don't only have the whodunnit but also the "why-dunnit-in-such-a-horrible-manner". A cruel murder always raises the stakes for me. Still, like I said, Christie is amazing and I won't hear a word against her.

One that I've read recently springs to mind. The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith.
A private detective is hired to find a missing person. Person in question is an author who's recently been trying to publish a book full of characters that are clearly based on his IRL friends and relations and all of their deepest secrets are revealed in the book.
Private detective eventually finds the body in an abandoned house tied up like a pig on a feast. His body completely disemboweled, his entrails hanging everywhere, and his entire body doused in acid, disintegrating his face and torso.
Honestly one of the sickest murder scenes I've ever read.
Stuff like this gets my detective senses tingling because I want to know who did it, but also WHY the fuck they did it in such a fucking horrible manner. Also, the answer is completely satisfying.

If you don't mind fishing around for used copies or scans, you should definitely read John Dickson Carr's novels. The man isn't known as the master of locked rooms for nothing, and some of his books were voted among the best impossible crimes ever written. He likes to tease supernatural horror a lot, and he also uses a red truth-like gimmick in several books to nail down evidence and testimony, so it’s really obvious that Ryuukishi got a lot of inspiration from him.

The Hollow Man: a "one set of footprints in the snow" mystery, featuring a double murder by a killer who is allegedly a weightless vampire. The solution is positively evil. If you’ve ever read about the Locked Room Lecture, this is the book it came from - there’s a metafictional scene where the cast discusses the mystery over tea Umineko-style.

The Crooked Hinge: two men attempt to claim an estate as the same person, then one of them has their throat slashed by nobody in full view of three people.

The Burning Court: a man appears to have died from witchcraft after receiving a visitor through a long-bricked-up door, and the corpse evaporates from a sealed tomb. Meanwhile, the victim’s nephew finds his wife’s photo in a book of executed 19th century poisoners.

It depends on how big you want the painting and what medium you want. Something like a 12"x16" painting would probably cost around $500-600 for acrylic on canvas depending on your negotiation skills. That doesn't include framing.

Regretfully, I stopped doing anything with visual arts about a decade ago with college and work getting in the way. Plus, my focus was more on drawing landscapes and infrastructure rather than painting people.

I'm relatively confident that I can pull off copycat paintings though. I might take pictures to document the process when I do get around to starting the portraits. Part of me also wants to just throw down $1200 and have any one of my relatives do the copycats, since I have a few painters and illustrators in my family, but it wouldn't be as fun.

If he had drafted the picture onto the canvas by breaking it down into proportional squares, he probably could've gotten even closer. Not really sure. It's possible that they did some of it digital. More than likely, it was drawn and painted by hand, then touched up digitally. Doing it digitally seems like it would be more of a pain than just doing most of the work by hand.

One little bit of weirdness I did notice with Battler's portrait is that the shading on the left upper pant leg, inner-thigh area, has a sort of abrupt discontinuity in the horizontal shading. Not sure if this was intentional or what. The hints of craquelure in suit Beato's painting are certainly false. Also I find it vaguely amusing that the frames for all of the portraits have the exact same features.

They're also a great actor, having spent most of their childhood roleplaying the characters they created. Just look at the North Wind and the Sun plan from Episode 3.

The mystery fans created him to recreate the most horrific boardgames imaginable to get under the skin of Tohya. So him being dominated by someone is impossible as he is the highest being in a gameboard. But Eva-Beatrice isn't. She just assumed the mantle of Beatrice and was discarted after ep 3.

This is why I chose Black Battler. He can break the rules. Just as he ''killed Ronove'' in Tsubasa, Black Battler can dominate Eva-Beatrice and summon her to do whatever he pleases. He can even tell Genji a joke and make him laugh.
His existence is wrong and impossible.

The thing is Jessica was never really that familiar with Kanon. I think the only time they really had a long conversation was because of the concert, and whereas Jessica new Shannon for a while, she had only known Kanon for a relatively short period.

I do have a theory that Jessica might have known what was going on, since there is some dialogue that hints at it. Ep 8 was first written by Tohya but then the mystery fans made their own gameboard where they again made Battler and his family as the main culprits. Seems they can only imagine Battler as the main culprit.

This is why Black Battler is created by the mystery fans. They will create as many contradictory forgeries that don't need to respect the rules, such as a piece somehow killing a meta being. That's because you're too suborn to accept the truth. The witches are representations of literary concepts within the story. Beatrice represents the collection of all Beatrice and the rules on the island, Lambda represents the causal links that brought all the events together, hence why she's able to be the gamemaster in ep 5 and act as arbiter in ep 6, and Bernkastel is the collection of mystery fans seeking to find the truth on the island.

I bought the RGD manga while I was in Japan hated it as much as I thought I would. I tried the free download first chapter of RGD and it just really lacked substance. I felt it was nothing more than a Baccano Clone.

Okay, time for another short mystery!

It's an alternative version of the First Game. The family have just discovered the 6 bodies in the garden shed. They're sitting in the lounge, discussing what to do.
In the meantime, Gohda and Kumasawa are in the kitchen preparing food, accompanied by Nanjo and Genji. On Natsuhi's advice, they only get tinned food because she fears the murderer might have poisoned the food.
Eventually everyone on the island is gathered in the lounge and eating their food. After a very short time, Natsuhi suddenly stands up and mumbles something about a terrible headache and wanting to lie down in her room. She takes a couple of wobbly steps and falls down right after opening the door. The family and servants are all shocked and Nanjo is on the scene quickly. He checks her pulse and soon declares her dead by cyanide poisoning. However.

This is something I've been thinking about recently, but how familiar do you guys think Ryukishi was with The Divine Comedy when he wrote Umineko? Sure, there are many obvious references to the divine comedy with some of the character names (Beatrice, Virgilia, and Clair Vaux Bernardus).

But I think what is most interesting about the references though is about the circumstances of the relationship between Dante and Beatrice. Dante only met Beatrice twice in his life, but Dante was so affected by the meetings that he dedicated numerous love poems to her and was part of his inspiration for The Divine Comedy, even after she died.

Maybe this is a stretch, but I think Ryukishi might have been inspired by the Dante and Beatrice dynamic, since it is mirrored in the story. The unrequited love for Beatrice by Dante is flipped with Beatrice towards Battler. Not to mention that Tohya is writing the forgeries out of the same inspiration in which Dante wrote his poems, out of the loss of their respective Beatrices. Maybe I'm thinking about this too much, though.
