07th Expansion thread.
Come discuss Higurashi, Umineko, Higanbana and others (and badger us for torrents you will never get).

Last thread turned to shit so let's start off with some discussion.
Which was your favourite scene in Higurashi?
Which was your favourite puzzle in Umineko?

Also, let's put on some jams.

-45 is amazing, he does the best music for fight scenes or when shit gets real. But you can't talk about Umineko music without mentioning dai. He's the best for melancholy or even happier tunes. Hope is still one of my favourites of the entire OST. And Towering Cloud in Summer is a great, relaxing bit of music to listen to while looking out the window into the sunny afternoon.

>I don't know, pretty much everyone who did music for Umineko did a really good job.
Seriously. The OST is fucking phenomenal and everybody did their bit.
I think zts' work is the most known. He provided the basic 8-minute "shit goes down" music for each individual episode and the scenes they play in are extremely memorable. But I agree on you for -45's work. The music just has a really distinct sound, church organs and everything, and they always play during amazing scenes and have a good, fast tempo that gets you pumped.
Seriously, I'm one of those people that consider Umineko a masterpiece, but the music is just fucking incredible as well and really adds to the experience.

It's a deconstruction of the mystery genre and should be admired and praised simply for the sheer attempt at telling such a story. It is not perfect, but it is a masterpiece. I wouldn't call it literature though, it's a step behind that at the very least.

I'm sure one day you will write a deconstruction of the erotica genre that will be admired and praised justly. With lots of Bernkastel spanking. In the meantime, that is not what Umineko is about. Now one could argue that it is what Umineko SHOULD be about but, but I would very much take the opposite point of view on that subject. Though I agree Bernkastel is very spankable.

You're talking about literally deconstructing something, as in a building. Deconstruction in the literature or even philosophical sense means something else entirely. Examples of deconstruction in Umineko are the meta discussions. In fact if you look up the definition of literature deconstruction you'll find it pertains to bringing in questions things like certainty, truth and identity.

I finished Umineko yesterday. I have no idea how to feel about it. I think it might be too meta for me. I went in thinking it was a mystery story and ended up with a story about mysteries.

I feel like I need more closure with it but at the same time I know it goes against what the entire thing was trying to say. I wish I could have read it as it was being translated, I imagine it was one hell of a ride.

That really hit too close to home, I could relate to a lot of George's experiences.

Especially when Eva-Beatrice says

>goes against what the entire thing was trying to say

Not really, I saw it as "find your own closure and move on", not really as to dismiss finding closure in anything at all. I think most of the answers become a lot more clearer if you re-read the VN, but if you don't want to, the manga version of Eps 7&8 make it a lot clearer on exactly what went down on Rokkenjima Prime and the gameboards.

>> No.15834272

I'll probably pick it up if that's the case. The lack of clarity with it is probably simultaneously my favourite and least favourite thing with it. I think I'm just happy he had the balls to not spell it out for the reader, but at the same time I like getting the cheat sheet to see how on or off the mark I was.

When who Beatrice was and her backstory finally clicked I was pretty shocked, it's so weird and taboo. Thinking about it, I'm not sure I want the cheat sheet on that cause I bet it'll end up being more fucked up than what's in my head at the moment.

Each case has a specific story, each one is a tragedy. Sometimes it's a mother who lost her daughter, sometimes it's a kid who lost himself and died, sometimes it's a man who's afraid of dying. There's always a story.

A friend of mine who just started reading Umineko pointed out to me that since her personality was described as a childs, in all those years living in Kuwadorian she should have been able to try and escape the mansion at least once because Rosa easily got in and out within the first hour, so Beatrice should have known about how to exit her cage.
"But wait," I said "she was told there were wolves patrolling around and probably scared."
Kids are naturally curious and if you tell them to not do something, they'll do exactly that. When little, Krauss wanted to pet the wolves, so Kinzo had to change the story. So in a sense the fact that she's never been outside her cage is a little bit off.

Man, blood's gonna spill like crazy once the shit starts hitting the fan.
At any rate, I suggest either waiting for the end to put the porn, or put it in interlude, seperated from the main story.

But I doubt you can really do it, since in your story, the porn is part of the story and part of the characters. It's not like the Tea Party where Bernkastel only get spanked at the end.

So yeah, I dunno. Ultimately, it's your decision, so do whatever feels natural to you. If you have to force, if it doesn't come naturally, that means you're probably writing wrong.

Aren't most of the characters two sided? Bullied but also bullies.

>> No.15843289

We already said it earlier. Umineko is all about the circle of bullying.
Kinzo was manipulated during his entire chilhood and never had a say in a anything. Then he got forcefully married to a wife he never loved, and got kids he hated. The only woman he loved died, making him a bitter husk lashing out at his own kids.
Said kids ended up picking on each others, and then picking on their own kids. Kinzo is responsable for Maria getting beaten up by Rosa.
It's a bit similar with the witches : Featherine is bored, so she picks on Bernkastel, who bullies Erika, who bullies Beatrice, who bullies Battler.

Umineko is all about bullying and being bullied. You think Krauss is a bully? You forgot that Kinzo probably beat the crap out of him with a wooden sword. You think Eva is overbearing? She was treated like shit by Kinzo despite being way better than Krauss. You think Natsuhi is a bitch for throwing Lion down a cliff? She was accepted in a very traditional family, was put under a LOT of pressure, was mocked by Eva for not being able to have a child, and finally Kinzo, the revered head of the family, stepped down and ordered her to take care of an unknown baby, basically saying that, for the Ushiromiya family, Natsuhi was a failure of a wife.
Not to mention the whole "being an outsider". No matter how much she tries, Natsuhi isn't an Ushiromiya.

>There must be no love interest. The business in hand is to bring a criminal to the bar of justice, not to bring a lovelorn couple to the hymeneal altar.
But there is no rule where the detective can't rape the culprit or throw that person to be ravaged by a pack of dogs as punishment.

Although what would be cool is if you incorporate a sex scene into the overall story. Have it relevant. Like in Umineko, Eva has sex with her husband in ep 1. That was relevant storywise and theme wise. Just having a sex scene for no good reason is boring. It's the reason why Ryukishi doesn't add ero scenes in his VN, he says it breaks the flow of the story.

>>15843428
I can't remember if it was Bernkastel or George who said it but a person who's been bullied is the harshest bully because he knows the feeling of humiliation and does not want to be bullied again.

I think it was Bernkastel who explained it as such but George says something similar when he's ''teasing'' Shannon at the beginning of ep 2.

The part where Maria talks about risk and how roses are beautiful because life requires risk and die.

It completely represents my dualistic view of idealism and realism. For example, let's say I give you two roses. One is a normal rose in bloom. The other is a perfectly crafted plastic rose. Which rose would you pick?

The answer depends on the person but most people would select the real rose because it's alive and smells good. The plastic rose can have some added things that give off artificial smells but it wouldn't compared to the real rose.
When you look from far away, both the real rose and fake rose look identical. However, it's when you look up close that you notice differences. The real rose is imperfect, it has torns or one of its petals is broken. The fake rose however is perfect. but it'll never match the beauty of the real rose. What people want is for the real rose to be as perfect as the perfect idealized rose but it never happens. There some instances when a real rose is as beautiful as a fake rose but those are worshiped as the greatest of what roses can be, it's just that people want all roses to be that perfect and all the time. So when you do snatch a rose from the ground, it's perfect, smells perfect, looks perfect and is perfect.

But unlike a fake rose, a real rose will die. It will grow old over time, there is a risk that a wind might push it away or the entire soil randomly goes bad. So you have to enjoy the rose blooming while you can for as long as you can, and cherish those memories as the rose dies and you can no longer smell its perfume.

But you can just put fake perfect roses in your house and yard and not give a single fuck.

I can't really shove spanking in a quick game, but whatever. Let's do it.

Since I don't know which one is better, I'm using both a post and an image.
The characters are Krauss, Natsuhi, Jessica, Eva, Hideyoshi, George, Rudolf, Kyrie, Battler, Rosa, Maria, Shannon, Kanon, Gohda, Genji, Kumasawa, Erika, and Bernkastel. Erika is the detective. Kinzo is dead, burned, buried and everyone know that.

On the first twilight, died Jessica, Maria, Hideyoshi, Kyrie, Gohda, Kumasawa. They were shot. Most of them were still sitting, meaning they were taken by surprise.

On the second twilight, died Genji and Natsuhi. Genji was stabbed several times with a kitchen knife, Natsuhi fell from a window. It is impossible to say which one because the body rolled, but it's clear she fell head first, from the second floor.

On the third twilight, died Eva and Georges. They were shot while guarding Hideyoshi's body. Georges cried like a little bitch while being alone near his father's deceased body.

On the fourth twilight, died Nanjo. He had a heart attack, locked himself in his room to recover, but was smothered by a pillow.

On the fifth twilight, sixth, seventh and eigth twilights, nothing happened.

On the ninth twilight, upon trying to recover food from the main mansion, Shannon was killed. Rudolf and Battler came back to report the murder. No details were given. Later inspection proved that she was stabbed several times. No defensive wounds.

On the tenth twilight, it is decided to evacuate the island. An argument between Rudolf, Battler, Kanon and Rosa leads to Kanon shooting and killin Rudolf, and heavily wounding Battler, who falls unconcious and cannot do anything else for the rest of the game.

On the eleventh twilight, the main mansion explodes. Rosa, Battler, Kanon, Erika and Bernkastel escaped.

>> No.15845937

>>15845915
And now for some more details : all the informations given there were recovered after they escaped. In other words, if it's mentioned, then someone figured it out or witnessed it.
No details about Shannon's death will be given until the others murders are resolved. Battler will not speak, even to the police.

Unless I fucked something up big time, you CAN resolve the game, it's really not complicated. No key trick, not locked rooms. I whipped that out in two minutes, you can resolve it in two minutes.

Jessica, Maria, Hideyoshi, Kyrie, Gohda, Kumasawa died in the dining hall.
Since it's intended for family meeting, it's soundproof.

Genji was found in a corridor on the first floor.
Natsuhi's body was found in the rose garden. It's sure she rolled from wherever she fell.

Eva and Georges were killed in front of the dining room in the main house after Erika said it was better to not move the bodies too much and Eva slapped her in the face and said she was going to sit him to make sure it wouldn't be defiled.

Nanjo was found in a guest room in the main mansion.

Shannon was found dead in the kitchen in the middle of a pool of blood.

Rudolf's body was covered with his jacket and abandoned in the guesthourse when everyone left. It was the only body that could be recovered and buried.

But most of the games this guy puts out aren't that good. You know it's the same guy because he keeps typing Georges for some unknown reason. I guess I'm coming across as quite rude and I don't really mean to be, I just think a game board should be thought through thoroughly. Just posting a list of people who die and where they're found doesn't really leave room for the feeling of a good mystery. You're missing the build-up, the clues, the character interactions, the red herrings, everything that makes a mystery work.

Kanon and Shannon are jealous that the Ushiromiya are a family. That's why the first murders are extremely brutal, because they're together. When one is alone, he's usually less brutal. They ganged up on Genji and that's why he was stabbed, but Kanon killed NAtsuhi and Nanjo alone, so the murders are less violents.
When Shannon tried to kill Rudolf, it backfired because of Battler and she was killed by them in retaliation for trying to kill them and killing Kyrie earlier.
After hearing of Shannon's death, Kanon wanted to stay put, but Rudolf provoked him.
Kanon retaliated and killed Rudolf, while Rosa tried to protect him by shooting Battler.

The fact that Battler was just wounded while Rudolf was killed was supposed to be a hint on the fact that Kanon knew how to use a gun.

>The problem here lies in that the mystery genre is not suited for internet forums
I disagree. The problem with mysteries on internet form is that they are low quality and have usually little thought to them or have bad structures. Or they rely on a wordplay gimmick more than a mystery puzzle because creating a puzzle is not as easy as it sounds.

I always thought that Umineko restrained itself in its blue/red truth battles. Like, despite Battler throwing a lot of blue truths, he never threw everything and the sink at witches. When I read When the Seacats Cry, that was exactly what I expected. The point of billions of blue truths flying is that you threw out every thought and everything you have at a witch, and if you still couldn't solve it, it meant you were truly defeated.

A good mystery is good because it's well structured but it ends with everything being wrapped up nicely by the detective at the end. You don't need to think, just enjoy the ride. And if you did think, it's alright because you likely didn't figure it out or something.
With internet mysteries, author interaction builds a lot of the hype and deductive ability so long as there is enough foreshadowing, red herrings and clues.

I agree that posting a list of people who die and where they're found isn't a good mystery. It's bare bones structure. There are no clues involved. You have to ask for them and then the author selectively tells you what happened which doesn't give a clear picture. This however is more of a failing of the author posting his mystery stories here rather than overall mysteries posted on the internet.

You and I have very different opinions on how to enjoy a mystery then. For me it's all about thinking. Looking out for the clues, the red herrings. Scrutinizing every sentence the writer puts in front of me because anything could be either important or completely irrelevant to the main story or presented mysteries. A mystery is a game between author and reader. I'd even say it's a challenge laid down by the author, challenging their readers to figure it out.
Now, that doesn't mean that if I don't figure it out I end up disappointed. I can lose the game, that's fine. The author can out-smart me. But I would never go into a mystery just for the ride. There's a puzzle laid out in front of me and I'll be damned if I'm gonna let the detective explain it before I even try and attempt to get it.

It is definitely a work of postmodern fiction.
Whether it's literature or not is a tough one though. It is definitely an example of an author trying his best to exceed beyond the boundaries of mystery fiction. There are enough points to be made for Umineko to be literature. However, it's the shounen fights that sort of "downgrade" the material. Even though it's got a lot to say on the definition of the genre, I'd be hard-pressed to find an academic who would call Umineko as a whole, literature. But it is pretty damn close and it is above and beyond most tripe that VNs usually contain.

The mystery genre was already low brow. The fight scenes is basically all those bullshit unreliable narrative happening outside the vision of the detective that can never be trusted. So rather than have something be bullshit and unreliable, why not have an action scene? I find it genius.

>I'd be hard-pressed to find an academic who would call Umineko as a whole, literature.
You don't need a person of authority to determine the value of a work. All that does is give it ''credibility'' and nothing more.

Umineko is literature.
Does Umineko have literary merit? Does it properly convey themes and messages to its audience? Does it convey emotions?
I say yes to both.

I don't think I would consider Umineko literature, but there are a lot of highly regarded works that have a lot of "lowbrow" stuff in them. It really just depends on how the author uses it. In umineko's case, I don't think the fights scenes downgrade the material at all, since oftentimes the fights had a larger point or purpose tied to them.

The detective genre in general is low brow. It's overly saturated, mostly boring, and does have academics reading the garbage to find the diamonds. Having some unusual scene that people will feel alienated because it's anime (like at the beginning when Eva randomly does a roundhouse kick to show off how awesome she is).
There are a lot of moments like those but I feel it adds more to the overall experience because while they are low brow, they serve the plot and structure of the story.
It's low brow for the sake of low brow. It's not just random.

I guess this is as good a time as any for an update. I've recently started working on Kyrie's edit. Her anatomy is proving difficult to get right. Her arms are like noodles, her waist isn't angled properly, and of course there's the issue with her breasts. This is definitely NOT a final version of her outline, but after trying and failing several times, I figured I should at least post what I have so far.

Nice. I think the hip and waist is fine when you have the suit cover most of it.
The bigger problem will be figuring out something to cover her breasts and slit.
I have an idea for her lower part

For the slit, I could either lower her belt or extend her tie so that one of them covers it.

That's pretty much what I'm doing and had in mind.
For her breasts, I think the best solution is to add that the suit flipper opener on the left to cover most of her breasts. That should cover the nipple area.

Overall, I'd say that the frame is fine as it is.

I say go for it. Both Higurashi and Umineko are made to be read multiple times anyway. If you already know the answer, that just means you'll be able to appreciate all the foreshadowing that would have been too subtle to notice on your first playthrough. Plus the anime left out quite a bit of content, so even though you'll know the general story, there'll still be plenty of events that you haven't seen yet.

How about this for a new topic;
>Choose one character from both Higurashi and Umineko.
>That character is placed on the opposing world's gameboard and is now the culprit of that story.
>What is their master plan and how do they carry it out?

For example, Irie as Umineko's culprit. At the first twilight he steals all changes of clothing on the island and hides them in the gold room, leaving only a bunch of maid outfits and a letter challenging everyone to solve the epitaph and regain their clothes. Then during each of the subsequent twilights he ruins the clothes that one person is wearing so that they're forced to change into one of the maid uniforms.
