I personally find the overall structure of Higurashi to be brilliant. Ryukishi is a writer who doesn't just write impactful scenes but purposefully structures his story to make his reader feel a certain type of emotion. The overall emotion of Higurashi is paranoia. I find it abasolutely genius the way the story makes the reader feel paranoia the same way as the characters.
One day, I might just make a video analysis of the structure in Higurashi. I really find Higurashi to be one of the greatest narrative stories ever made because of this.

Both Umineko and Higurashi have wonderful characters. The thing is that all of the characters in Higurashi are all great without exception and are given a good amount of depth. I would argue though that Umineko's characters are deeper and more interesting but not enough characters have this sort of depth.

I don't know what you mean by lame revelation and over use on plot device.

The thing that gets me about Umieko characters is that they are shown, with the exception of the grandchildren, to be pure bastards down to a character. All of them end up murderers in a sense, all of them are hateful, prideful, greedy people spawned by a lecherous and essentially evil Kinzo.

I'm fine with asshole characters, but none of them make any progression. The progression is that they all died on October 5th. That's it. The end. The rest is either Ange magic Resurrection or unreliable narrator.

Why would there be a progression? The tragedy already occurred and there are only piece clones of them stuck in purgatory like games to play out different scenarios which all end the way they are supposed to, based on the overarching narrative structure of the meta and the forgeries. They are much more than just assholes. Every one of them has more depth to them than just their flaws.

Without love it cannot be seen. There is much more to their characters than simply being greedy fucks.

>>15626037

The HS is not the reason they went insane. Ryukishi explains it at the end of the manga. Tragedy happened simply because they didn't talk. The HS does not make everyone insane automatically, but only if they persue random accusations and don't talk to anyone.
If K1 doesn't give a shit about the murders, ep 1 doesn't happen.
If Shion would talk about her burden, ep 3-5 wouldn't have happened.
If Rena had talked to Mion about her family problems, ep 6 wouldn't have happened.

Tragedy is the plot device, not the HS.
What I also love about Higurashi is that it's not as though X made everyone randomly insane, but you were given a first person narration of their drive into madness. You had a direct process of thought from K1 finding out about the murders to killing his friends. From Shion leaving her school to killing her sister. From Rena playing with K1 to them fighting on the rooftop.
Were any of their actions completely irrational? At the end point, it completely was, but not the process of getting there.
The road to hell, etc etc. It's only when you're in hell do you realize the actions you've done.

Though there could never be a good explanation for Tenpei's death. I'm sure there's some scientific accuracy about people scratching their throat from paranoia but I don't know about it.

>> No.15626100

>>15625990
I like Higurashi because even knowing the "truth" still makes it scary.
Keiishi is still slowly falling in paranoia and he can suck you in his delusions (even if you know Oyashiro is just a loli), Mion and Shion will scare you, and to see how Far Rena was pushed before finally snapping were brilliant, and because of the way it was written, you can take them independently.

Yes. But that is drawn out of clone pieces through adversity, Rosa realizing that she has to cherish Maria, Eva's basically everything, Krauss and Natsuhi reconciling with reality and Kinzo etc. They all show themselves to be characters capable of moving on.

But they never moved on. They are cold in the ground. All that ever happened was whispers of ghosts making a light show.

OR it was possible they remembered because of magic at the end through Ange Ressurecting...Piece them? Actual them? It's not clear but up to interpretation. But the chapter 8 pieces act wayyyy out of character. I believe that's what those characters would say at the end if they could, but it's too clean. I like to think they had a episode 8 style get together and hashed it all out, but really that's wishful thinking.

>>15626118
>Yeah, all those hallucinations never happened!
They all happened. Hallucinations did happen.

Hearing someone walking behind you? That's Hanyuu. Explanation? The HS heightens your senses and gives you strength when stressed.

The creepy eyes? That's just how K1 felt when he was being pushed by Rena and Mion. Admittedly, the USODA scene may or may not have happened as the manga shows that K1 was screaming at Rena, but it's not entirely impossible for Rena to be mad, considering Rei showed Rena turn mad on a dime.

There was never a needle.

The syringe at the end however was a hallucination though, so I'll give you that.

Like Rika explains in ep 7, when you see a dot on a wall, what do you see? A dot, right? But when you're stressed, your mind plays tricks on you and depending on the person, it could be a fly or a spider.

>Satoko even kills her parents because of self-preservation due to the HS.
Well yeah, she was deeply streesed.
HS only hightens your stress level if your stressed. It doesn't make you do anything except worsening your condition if you let it.

HS is simply a disease that does not control people if they treat the illness immediately. HS does not make you do anything, it just makes you worse.
This is why Irie protects Satoko from being investigated. Just like his dad changed personality and beat his mother. A disease can make a person do fucked up things if not treated.

>Teenagers don't talk and get paranoid all the times
Another way of seeing it is that HS only gives heightened schizophrenia.

Basically >>15626188 said it better than my rambling.

Christ he repeated the key to solution over and over and over, a second read-through and its painfully obvious what the trick was.

I think the problem is probably Umineko doesn't work in distant installments because there is far to much build-up, speculation, and discussion that muddies the narrative. When I read the VN the entire thing had been released and I was able to binge it. I didn't find any of the problems in the narrative structure that people seem to complain about.

I vastly prefer Chiru to the original games in fact. Something about living so much in the meta and then meta-meta was just a stimulating experience but then again I'm a woman and if I hadn't met R07 IRL I would assume he was a female writer because of how his mind works and how much seemingly first-hand insight he has on the female mind

Chekhov's gun in some cases quite literally plays a huge part in the guess work as well which was the same as Higurashi. Reading Agatha Christie probably gave me a big primer because she was also a fan of using thematic elements to guide you in the right mindset for the solution without providing overt easy clues.

Death Comes as the End in particularly is a mystery you can solve with pure gut feeling if you are attuned to the themes of the story.

>Kyrie Eleison
>Lord, have mercy.
>Kyrie
>The Lord

I think Kyrie was actually God, who in all His magnanimousness decided to put the unclean heathens from the Ushiromiya family into a test for redemption. Kyrie used His messengers, Maria and Yasu (it's a reference to Iesu - i.e. our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ) to deliver His message and to put forth the test. However, the Ushiromiyas, being a representation of all the sins, refused to listen to our Lord's merciful message, and thus, sadly, they had to be punished, and Rokkenjima became another Sodom and Gomorrah.

Not all of them were a lost case. There were 2 good sheep who deserved salvation. One of them was Eva. However, she had fallen prey of many sins, and thus, our Lord left her without her Adam. In addition, she had to atone for her sinful ways for the rest of her life. The other survivor was Battler, which would be a representation of Job. At the end, after seeing how the Lord - who all gives - took everything away from him, and accepted it, he was rewarded with a new life. And thus, Battler died, and Tohya was born. Together with his new partner, they write Christian stories to spread the word of our Lord.

As for Ange, she was viral marketing for hamburgers, nothing to see there.

This, my dear friends, is the truth behind Rokkenjima.

It's not about being a drama for women or for men thats the problem. The reason why Umineko is polarizing is because of how the story is designed. If you don't approach the story with the right attitude you will end up being disappointed by it if you come with the wrong expectations. I think a lot of people just expected Umineko to be another Higurashi. Postmodern works in general tend to be very polarizing.

That "right attitude" wasn't very specific at all. What I mean by "right attitude" is that you shouldn't expect the story to spoonfeed you answers, and it should have been quite obvious that the story wasn't going to handhold you by the time you got to episode three. The right attitude for Umineko was to keep an open mind and think for yourself, if you expected the story to all of a sudden break tone and tell you that all of the magic scenes were lies and wastes of time and give you direct answers to everything, then you were obviously going to be disappointed.
>I really didn't appreciate Ryukishi's attitude about it either, at moment, he really sounds like a kid who asks you a difficult question, constantly snickers as you try to find an answer, and repeats "nope, try again" with a huge shit-eating smile as you present a theory.

The guy is almost impossibly sweet and kind IRL, its weird to think some of the twisted and cruel shit comes out of his mind when you meet him. I prefer Higurashi over Umineko. I'm not saying you're wrong about the master piece part, both are very great pieces of work that can stand on their own, just sharing my opinion. I have a nice special bond with it. The drama and comedy was outstanding, and forgive me for this, but I think the characters were more likable than Umineko. Was wondering when the Umineko haters would show up.

Honestly, many (not all) people who don't like it just aren't fans of the genre. Detective-type stories are meant to be read twice before you really understand them, and it's clear from the comments here that several anti-Umi readers consider it an insult to be forced to figure stuff out on your own.

That's fine, it's a long series and I can understand not wanting to read it all twice. But I don't think Ryuukishi did anything less than what he set out to do.

As a side note, before we even criticize the answer, it sounds like most people here haven't even gotten close to solving it, both on the pro and anti Umi sides. The EP8 manga includes many "answers", but less than half of the complete solution.

Why do they try so hard to make Rosa unlikable? It feels to me like the author of this is an autist who got """bullied""" by his mum and decided to take his frustrations out on a fictional character. >> No.15630322

Then the answer proposed is merely a theory, not a solvable answer. Someone could look at the same questions as you and come up with a different answer. Until a solution is published, they are both valid. Hence no, you have no found a 'solution' and anons who read through Umineko + manga have about the same grasp as you.

One of the requirements for a good detective novel, as stated by both Knox and Van Dine, is that it be solvable before reading the last chapter. No. If the piece of work is meant to have a correct answer, then regardless of whether or not it is published, the author has still established a single ultimate truth. Any theories are valid interpretations, but they are not valid truths until confirmed by the author. Regardless, there is still a single truth unless otherwise stated. Taking a close look at that Ryuukishi interview about the EP8 manga, he's really only saying that the "episodes/scenes involving Yasu" are true answers. That whole paragraph is just talking about the secrets of Yasu as a character, not the specific solutions for the crimes of each game. What exactly is the mystery in Umineko?
Beatrice's identity? Or who is the killer - if there is even one? Or just generally what happened on Rokkenjima that day?
The problem is R07 lures us into a trap when we think the story is about what happened that day. He never intended to tell us that. The story is about who is Beatrice and what is her relation to Battler. That is all.

Been a while since I read umineko, but what scenes are you talking about? The only scene I remember vividly of Rosa getting tortured was that scene in ep 4 with Witch-Maria killing Rosa over and over again, but that was just Maria's fantasy so it made sense. There could've been another one at the end of episode 2, but I vaguely remember it. I need to re-read Umineko sometime.

I think the story doesn't go out of its way to make Rosa unlikable, I think all of her actions in the story are justified due to her circumstances. I don't think she totally didn't care about Maria, I think she did care, but at the same time she felt embarrassed and shamed about Maria. There were two contradictory feelings inside of her, she wanted to care for Maria, but at the same time she felt that Maria was dragging her down.

I remember the ending of episode two (re-reading this part now because I just thought about it) really emphasized this point. Rosa and Maria are running away from the goats , and Rosa tells Maria that she feels bad about not being a good mother to her, about not caring for her well and not giving her much attention. Maria replies that although there is a 'good Mama' and a 'bad Mama' she recognizes that Rosa is just one person, and is able to accept that.

Man, I can't believe I didn't pay attention to that part before. Re-reading this is incredible.

I agree, EP1 is the best EP. The solutions for all the other EPs depend on you understanding EP1 first, which is why they feel like they don't make sense on their own.

EP1 can be solved by itself. It has to be, to satisfy the Knox Rules when meta-Beatrice challenges us to solve it in the Tea Party. Why would Ryuukishi challenge us to solve it then if it's unsolvable?

For all the other EPs, we can't be sure if they're supposed to be solvable by themselves, or only with information from previous Episodes. But in EP1, it's nice and simple.

The characters don't remember until episode 6 in Higurashi (not counting Rika), and when the next world comes along, they forget again.

Umineko is much more cynical compared to Higurashi in that regard, but that's kind of why I like it more. It had an element of tragedy to it. The characters in Umineko all feel guilty for their wrongs, but none of them are able to fully atone for it. The most we can do for the characters is recognize the fact that they felt guilty about what they did, and move on.

Then what's actually happening in those pages, idiot? Ange just randomly deciding to freak out like that? Kyrie and Rudolf randomly wandering around with guns after all the other corpses are shown and just so happening to do exactly the things they did in the EP7 tea party? Ange's family portrait just randomly being shown during her freak out? EP7's tea party just being included for the fuck of it for no reason? Beatrice explicitly saying Kyrie's name in >>15630893? Bern's ritual of disemboweling Clair meaning absolutely nothing? Get over yourself. We haven't gotten anything confirming your conspiratorial trick in the six years since this series ended and we're never going to get any. Your garbage assumption that Ryukishi is a mastermind tricking everyone puts him on a higher pedestal than is realistic and only confirms your denial of the story's conclusion and dissatisfaction with it because you don't like it. Why don't you give US proof that Ryukishi is doing logical things with his story for no reason and deceiving everyone? There's plenty of proof for what's been shown, you just choose not to consider it.

That's Hou, not TRI

This image was made when Hou and Tri were just announced as was mostly based on speculation and theorizing. Back then, I was assuming that Tri was a single story with the overall theme of mesa over meta, with the implication from Ryukishi that he would never make another meta type story again. But what is the opposite of meta? Why, mesa of course.

http://www.gwiznlp.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Whats-the-opposite-of-meta.pdf

I found this piece that was rather interesting and found it weirdly coincidental that it meshed well with sci-fi, which is a genre that focuses on scientific accuracy and description to create the realism of the world.
Mesa also somewhat fit into the theme of TRI, since you have to find the similarities within the story to find its meaning; to figure out how three unrelated stories are somehow connected.
In an interview, Ryukishi mentioned that he wanted to make a curse that spawned over generations, so this TRI might be what he had envisioned.

Just because a good story should have something doesn't mean it does. I can make the same argument in the opposite direction, that a good story needs a good ending. It might work. It just seems like an open hole of flesh and skin rather than the outline of her breasts seen from the side.

Although if you could make an opening of the one winged eagle on her chest, it might look better.
The idea itself might work. the yellow band needs to be united with the yellow band connected to her collar. I can fix that myself but I really like the idea.

I think the only thing left is to create a believable opening in her chest with the eagle design.

Well a lot of is compiled from random bits he's released here and there like Lambda's Dairy and Our Confession but it also has some new stuff that I am having trouble reading well because I suck at reading kanji.

It was worth the purchase even though it took the Tora Ana people half an hour to locate it on the floor even though they had the SKU in their system. I legit think they only had one copy even though it had been out a few days.

Let's examine the female characters in Umineko.
Jessica is a worthless woman who has bad grades and is only liked for her body.
Eva's greatest accomplishment was to bare a man who has no manly traits. She accepted her role as a woman who's only good for cooking and raising a child, and she couldn't even do that properly.
Natsuhi's parents lost to Kinzo and was forced to marry into the family. Her entire existence is to simply be beautiful supporting wife and praise the patriarch of her new family constantly.
Rosa is a shit mother because she chose poorly her mate and her life could've greatly improved had she gotten another man into her life.
Kyrie is portrayed as a woman who thinks coldly and rationally but she is the opposite of that. She threw away her family name just to be with a man. Rather than use her intellect to get her more money, she used her intellect to get herself what gave her the most happiness. And she was bested by a woman who rather than be helpful financially to her man, showed herself to be stupid. Or moe as it is commonly known. Asumu knew that the only way to truly get a man was to absolutely submissive, stupid and pretend to be needy.
Ange and Maria were both very submissive and gullible, but this is not their fault as most children are easily tricked.

In conclusion, girls love Umineko because they aspire to become the female characters in Umineko. And even though they don't have much of a future, they still found happiness and love by embracing submissiveness.

Kinzo found the love of his life, became financially successful but raised shitty children due to his patriarchal ways.
Krauss had financial foresight but is too weak of a man to stick to his vision. He was still a good father and accepted responsibility when his dabbled with the debt and breaking the law.
Rudolf had sex with countless woman and was a mild success financially. He married twice, had two wonderful smart children and one eventually became a worldwide literally success.
Hideoyoshi is a rather boring man but still managed to mark himself as unique with his fake accent. He became a financial success but his good nature was ill suited in the financial world and came to bite him.
Battler lived his life the way he wanted, even if he threw away his path to success for banal reasons.
George is a piece of autistic shit but he still had good grades and knew a lot from his studies. George could buy out any girl he wished but accepted his mediocre status and sought with his own strength a woman who would love him for who he is.

Piece Battler was retarded. But in the real world, Battler was actually smart, he just have a good education. This is why Ange was the intellectual superior of the two. And it can be argued that Battler's speedreading made him smart. But since he only read mystery novels, his intelligence was wasted. Not to mention Kinzo lamented that he had foolishly thrown away the family name, implying that it was his only fault. And in that case, Battler would've been a worthy successor to the Ushiromiya name.

Don't you find it weird that Piece Battler's answers to Beatrice at the end of ep 4 was rather lackluster when he read an insane amount of mystery novels? Especially that part at the end when Battler fought Bernkastel who threw at him literally millions of mysteries and he solved them all instantly?

He could easily prepare him about his body without telling him the truth when he entered middle school.

How is letting brood and feeling uncomfortable about his body better? If Yasu knew about his body issues, it would still have been traumatic, but just knowing about them, he could plan ahead in case he wanted to enter in a relationship with someone.

Instead Genji just let Yasu be uncomfortable and confused for 16 (?) years of his life thinking he could bear children.

Yeah, I was also thinking that it's too open. I tried adding part of her pants to the left leg but it was too short.
Probably more shading will do the job but I feel like something should be added to her leg. It's too barren.

>> No.15633523

I was thinking of some clothes to cover the leg on the left the same way the shirt cover the right side. It needs something but her dress is lacking in ideas on what to add.

I was thinking more vertically, from the middle of the shirt bar down on the leg. but seeing it covered made me realize that it might be too much. There's too many 'things' on her body and it greatly distracts the eye, if you can understand what I mean. Maybe you're right. Leaving the leg untouched adds to the eroticism and it's fine the way it is.

As one final idea, I tried adding a semi-transparent layer, like a stocking or something. It's slightly less lewd but slightly more realistic. But yeah, maybe it's better to leave the leg bare.

>> No.15633655

>>15633641
I like the realism. We could add it for the second batch of sprites like Maria's dress that are realistically lewd.

Though overall, yeah, I think leaving the leg bare is the best solution. I think more shading on the leg will make it look better.

There's a gag panel from the manga, which I can't seem to find for some reason, where Battler says ''Ange you've...'' then looks at her breasts and cries tears of joy. There's even an arrow of him directly looking down at her breasts.

On a somewhat less serious side, genetics is such a good excuse for everyone in the cast to be good looking and having perfect bodies.
