Let's go with a hypothetical scenario. It''s 9 turns into a hand, and you're in 2shanten. You have a hand that's good enough to push with, imagine whatever you want to imagine. Make it a yakuman if you like.

The 2 tiles you need to cut to hit tenpai aren't equally dangerous. You have reason to suspect that one is fairly dangerous and you could deal in.
Do you:

a) discard the dangerous one first, seeing as it will only become more dangerous later on, and it might pass if you push right now; or,
b) discard the one that's safer, waiting to see if someone else deals the dangerous one, either dealing in or giving you a chance to discard it yourself

I know it's a pretty worthless hypothetical scenario since there's no context, but I want to hear others' thoughts.

It depends on the tile. Does the most dangerous tile help my ukeire at all? If neither affects my speed and I'm going to push for sure, then I'd rather drop the more dangerous tile first. It might not actually be dangerous at the moment and it will only get more dangerous if it stays in my hand, whereas the tile I feel is less dangerous or mostly safe will stay that way in most cases.

Having my overflow tile be safe is a big advantage because it means, if I hit tenpai, I'll have a chance to win for at least one turn before I have to deal any other potentially dangerous tiles. Sometimes that window is all it takes to separate a hand you win from a hand you can never win due to being unable to deal a certain tile.

Then you haven't really played a lot and shouldn't be worried that your Rate is low. That's normal. If you try to read up on advanced concepts, they'll probably go over your head. Your best route to improving is tile efficiency, learning when to betaori, and memorizing all the yaku.

>> No.15555777

>>15555705
Just keep on going, you'll learn from experience.

If you want me to sum up what I think is important to stop losing so much, I'd say there's three stages to defense.

1) Learn when to fold. Don't push shit hands. Always weight your hand against the potential hand you could be dealing into

2) Learn how to defend. Suji, but not always suji. Learn about kabe, see in what order the person you're defending against discarded the tiles, try to figure out what kind of shape he's aiming for.

3) This is the tricky one, but there's a lot of info you can gather from opponents calls, and the tile they deal right away. It's more advanced, but try to figure out what kind of shape he had before calling, and build what his hand looks like in your head. It's a lot of things to keep track of, since you have to do this actively and before you even start thinking about defense.

Tile efficiency and preventing other players from winning are what I'd call offense, but I'd say it's less necessary for last place avoidance.

But don't forget that at the end of the day, if you're plain unlucky, there's not that much you can do.

I'd consider some of these defensive concepts to be a bit advanced for the beginner. You can learn them whenever you feel comfortable doing so, but like with the big pdf book, some of them might be hard for you to understand if you aren't experienced enough.

Different people will struggle with different things, so it's hard to give a definitive answer.

When players here show they hit 6 Dan, I look at their stats to determine whether they can climb higher or not. If they already max out at 26% or higher, there is no way they go further.

If you go for sanshoku then in all likelihood you'd either chii the 2s or you'd end up in tenpai waiitng on it. If you riichi, it's highly unlikely for anyone to deal in, and it's still unlikely for you to tsumo. Sure, you could get lucky and get pinfu with sanshoku (in which case you'd dama), but that's not going to happen often over the long run.

If you abandon sanshoku then you get a reliable riichi pinfu with much higher chances of tsumo.

There's still three 2s, so drawing it yourself isn't unlikely nor impossible. It's also very hard for anyone else to use them because three of the 3s are gone, so the possibility that someone will deal it isn't out of the question either, especially if they riichi.

>> No.15557080

Only three tiles out of sixty, plus you limit your ukeire to reach tenpai in the first place. And when there's a 3s kabe, it's not uncommon for another player to have a pair or even triplet of 2s.

It's only E4 and the points are all still very close. You don't need to push yourself for an unlikely big hand. It's better to go for the more likely hand to cut off first's dealer turn and build a buffer against last.

>> No.15557239

>>15557080
You don't limit your ukeire that severely. Discarding 1s is 9 tiles, discarding 8m is 6 tiles. Three tiles is a decent amount but hardly the line between possible and impossible. Sanshoku is not unlikely at all in this scenario. It's less likely than pinfu, perhaps, but that's about it.

>> No.15557684

>>15557239
Discarding 1s puts you in iishanten waiting on 36p3679s, of which there are sixteen left. Discarding 8s waits on 36p237s, of which only 36p2s give you sanshoku, and there are only ten of those left. That's a huge difference, especially at iishanten.

Even if it's not impossible, it's unlikely and unnecessary.

If you want to bring it down to semantics, then fine. I'm not arguing in favour of pinfu itself, I'm arguing for the wider iishanten which will most likely also give pinfu, as opposed to the narrower iishanten for an unlikely sanshoku. Mukoubuchi Cup Group A seems to be live now. Group A lasts from 7/19 ~ 7/24 and transfers 2% of your score, Group B lasts from 7/25 ~ 7/30 and transfers 5% of your score. Final stage is 7/31 ~ 8/4. Playing 12 times in tonpussen gets you a Kai background, playing 12 times in three player gets you a cityscape background.

Also on 7/31 is the Mukoubuchi high rate table, which is 3 player only and has a rate of 1 = 40g. Which seems like a great idea if you like setting fire to large piles of your chips.

Good luck if anyone else is playing in it.

Like many things to this game. Your points will tell you.

If you have the lead, you don't do it and give others the chance to benefit from kandora at all. Even if you are tenpai with a shot at rinshan.

On the other hand, if you are in a points deficit, you'll desperately need that chance at both kandora and/or rinshan. Especially in 4th place late in the game, the benefit outweighs the risk.

If I analyzed it correctly the only difference the riichi makes in terms of points would be the possible uradora and in this case the riichi would've given the additional advantage to you if someone only plays the genbutsu tiles of shimocha. You're way behind in points and it's already South 3 so you do need all the points you could've gotten that's why in my perspective it's not that bad of a move, not that you're defending anyway.

>> No.15573199

>>15573168
I'm saying this from the perspective that you're throwing all your inhibitions away and you're hellbent on pursuing dank hands and the win because you could've also thrown the 6m and still get an easy 4 han hand. Looking over at the discards of shimocha every pin tile looks extra sketchy, so it would've been better if you opted for the lesser but still good 6m discard.

The key is learning when to defend and when to push. This isn't a clear-cut process since you have to determine how likely your opponents are to go out and is your hand worth the risk. Also, while pushing you have to constantly evaluate speed vs value.

Only experience and loss will forge your mahjong

A rule some people like to say is fold when someone declares riichi unless you are tenpai with a good wait and decently big hand or iishanten with a huge hand. I'm not a great judge of when to push, so I usually just fold.

Don't call unless it makes your hand move closer to tenpai. Going for a quick win is fine at times, too. Just remember that open hands tend to be cheaper than closed hands.

Also, sometimes you have to fold even though you've called some tiles and are (or are near) tenpai. For example, my current alt has an absurd calling rate, but my deal-in rate is decently low since I'm not afraid to fold when I feel like someone reached tenpai before I did. I wouldn't given how cheap your hand would be and how little of your winning tiles are available in the best scenario. Most likely they are either in your kamicha's hand or the dead wall.

With miraculous luck you could get a riichi, menzen tsumo, pinfu, ippatsu, ura dora and push it to a mangan, but how likely is that?

You'd probably just Ron with pinfu riichi and get 2000, which you'd essentially get if you just hang back and get a noten payment. The later option gives you the possibility of bailing.

But hey, if you feel like Dojima's wave is coming, then go ahead.

East and west are already bailing, so it's unlikely they'd drop your winning tiles anyway. You're not going to fold with this hand, either, so you might as well maximize your potential value.

"I dealt in, I have no chance of making it back" and you'll improve that much faster. Take a break if you need to clear you mind, absolutely do not play if you're not in the mindset to make reasonable decisions because you will dig yourself deeper in the hole of despair.

Decided yesterday to get into mahjong but it's so overwhelming. I'm more of a visual guy so reading the rules doesnt really help me. I watched pros on youtube but didnt understand anything. I decided to watch Saki because I thought it would explain it a bit better but I still don't understand much. What might help him is if he broke down the total goal into individual expenditures, like what the cost of the visa was, what he expects to pay for first month's rent, etc. Basically, transparency on what he's researched by breaking down the cost of his escape from the third world might give his fundraising more legitimacy in the eyes of potential donators.

I personally doubt he's trying to trick people out of their money but I am a big sucker for sob stories and have been in a similar situation once just because his 'targets' are niche manga fans.
