Sadly, that's currently the case. As I said, the only known workaround is screencapping.

You and me both. Sadly, some films have only been released in 720p. Many not-so-recent Prestige films come to mind, like 2013, 2014. R18 won't tell you the exact resolution, sadly.

In a way, the 720p releases are better than the 1080p ones, because they have the same bitrate at lower resolution, giving an arguably clearer picture overall. But that's another matter.

Before you buy anything, be sure to check nyaa, javlibrary and all the other sources you can think of to see if there really is no rip to be found anywhere. Buying on R18 should really only ever be a last resort for you.

On people talking on the merits of DVD or HD off R18 and trying to screencap, DVDs do have some better merits. The main thing would be it's much easier and less time consuming to rip any copy protection off a DVD and upload an ISO than trying to figure out how to screen record without it having frame drops or screentears, etc. There's also the fact the HD files on DMM/R18 are improperly de-interlaced to 30FPS. There's a lot of ghosting in the frames with motion. And considering there are girls getting fucked in these, there's going to be a lot of motion. It's really noticeable in MUM releases I've seen, but I have a SFW comparison here.

Frankly, if you really like a movie and want something better than a shitty Chinese Casino rip with a url in the corner, it may be best to buy it on DVD if you feel like spending a total of $30 shipped to the US. And on the plus side, if the DVD is interlaced, there's a good chance you can get it to be 60FPS. I've only run into one DVD from REAL where it was still 30FPS even though it was interlaced.
