You have to run across the galaxy from a massive army, getting into battles where you have to make tactical decisions on what functions you want to destroy in the enemy ships, fight off boarders, install your own teleporter and capture the enemy ships if you want and perform side quests.

There are many text box quests too, and they have random chances of rewarding or punishing you. The Space Spider event is notorious because doing anything but running the hell out of there has a high chance of permanently killing a crew member.

Generally, you will die. You will die because you jump too close to a star and overheat all the systems. You will run out of fuel and sit helplessly as the enemy close in. Your oxygen room will get trashed, the airlock will be jammed open from when you tried to suck the invaders and a raging fire into space and then the door control gets fucked.

Its a lot of fun but can get frustrating after a bit.
