What bothers me is how they played the 'buy our shitty games and we'll bring you better games, we can't get you the good games directly unfortunately' card once again, and this time we have proof it's bullshit. They intentionally went for BBH instead of Rance, then lied to the community about being forced to take BBH while they really totally wanted to do Rance immediately. We have to buy their games, otherwise Rance is truly impossible for them!

The issue is more that it's more sensible profit-wise to use their localization resources on new titles than polishing old ones (Higurashi being a major exception). Looks immature – probably wrong word choice here, considering the word ‘mature’ when used referencing people tends to reference their personality. So ‘looking immature’ doesn’t tend to be used.

That being said, the big issue is with the last 3 lines. The repetition of the word ‘school,’ the repetition of the short sentences, the second sentence actually badly reinforces the point made in the first, because it’s done in a robotic manner. So yeah, there’s real issues with those lines.

I’m not sure if a whole sentence for ‘that’s where I go’ is appropriate either, the short sentence would emphasise the statement, but replacing the period with a comma and replacing the ‘that’s’ with ‘which is’ would make it more conversational. That being said, the power of the short sentence ‘that’s where I go’ is lost because of the number of short sentences coming after it.

The robotic tone of the narrative might be because this is a self-insert VN? I dunno, I can’t read Japanese so I wouldn’t be able to tell. It’s hella robotic in English though.

That being said, narrative is really hard to translate into smooth flowing English, and if you ever want to find problems with a VN translation, ANY VN translation, just grab yourself a piece of narrative and go nuts. Narrative really requires someone with writing knowledge to be involved in the project, dialogue is a bit easier. RPG translations probably have it a bit easier because they’re not translating any narrative.

And MG have really improved since these times anyway :)

Setoguchi is considered one of the best writers in the industry (or was, before he moved on to novels). So no, it wasn't supposed to sound robotic. If something is as highly praised as Kira Kira is in Japanese yet few people care about it in English, it's usually a sign that something went wrong somewhere.

>If something is as highly praised as Kira Kira is in Japanese yet few people care about it in English, it's usually a sign that something went wrong somewhere.

I think people are just stupid, because even in the English translation, Fate/stay night is amazing.

Also, think about this. People have no problem constantly throwing money at Sekai Project despite their highly disappointing translations. So I suspect translation quality isn't what held Kira Kira back in this case, even if it admittedly could have been better. There's something about the content of the VN itself that draws in Japanese people but does not interest English speakers, despite its quality. The timing of the release probably also did not help, because it was back when MangaGamer was a much lesser known company and the perception of VNs was still that they were mainly porn-heavy games, so nobody really saw anything of theirs worth bothering with. So, timing, and content.

Look at how Chrono Clock, seen as garbage in Japanese, is probably going to be one of Sekai's best selling games because it's some flashy shiny serious business sequel to Chrono Cross time travel game. I'm really worried about Himawari, but Frontwing's version actually is really shiny and good-looking so maybe that will be enough to draw people into discovering a great story. I think FSN got attention because it had the fortune of getting its patch when there wasn't much competition. It also had badass action in a time when there were not many translated VNs that could offer that. So people who were tired of all the sex games were very interested in this kind of thing.

This patch seems to have an odd history for such a short game. Started it way back in 2013, slowly did some stuff over the first half of 2014 and then "WOW! IT'S FUCKING NOTHING!" for over a full year, until the patch suddenly got released yesterday.

I guess some dead patches don't actually die, they're just really fucking slow. Perhaps someday, we'll see the rest of Akai Ito translated. Someday.

Yeah, I too much prefer a woman's penis.

I actually do prefer that, if I have to have a penis. Because at least it also comes with a woman. Literally? Venom Snake.

>waah these guys aren't qualified to translate my games for me for free!

Either learn Japanese or shut the fuck up, you entitled shits. These people owe you nothing, and do not answer to you.

So, you're saying you rather have something pretty much machine translated than no translation at all.
Anyone who thinks like that has no respect for this medium and doesn't deserve to be called a fan of VNs.

I don't know how you got that out of his post, so I assume you're just trying to push an agenda. What he's saying is that beggars can't be choosers, so if you have time to bitch about the translation you have time to learn Japanese.

Yeah, pretty much. These threads seem like 80% whining about translators these days, it's pathetic. Fan translators suck, all of them do. If you want to escape shitty translations you learn the language. If you're too lazy to do that you can shut the fuck up, since it's your own fault that you're relying on random people translating shit in their free time for your hobby. Bitching and whining every single time is just fucking childish.

They've been like that for a long time.

He replied to posts that criticized the japanese knowledge of that "translator" by assuming these posts were made by guys who don't know japanese and are desperate enough to read whatever shit gets released. The critics are completely valid and even if the translation is being done for free, the translator not having a strong grasp of the japanese language shows the lack of respect him and those who will actually read his "translation" have for the medium. So yes, I don't see any reason to "shut the fuck up" and be called an "entitled shit".

I don't know japanese but if it comes to my attention a certain translation is very shitty, you most certainly will see me complaining and not even touching that translation. I don't want to see multiple random "translators" showing up out of nowhere pretty much machine translating VNs. By not complaining, you're showing your support to such project which as a result means that you're desperate enough to forget the kind of respect VNs deserve. Not complaining to such projects is a mistake and I can only see people saying that you shouldn't complain as being naive.

if you're a hobo and a soup kitchen says they'll give you lunch, but then you find out that they're using spoiled meat and sawdust bread I think you're still within rights to complain. you could have used the time spent waiting in line to look for a slow moving pidgeon, and it's possible that the scam food bank prevented a legitimate one from opening in the same area because they thought it was already covered.

Why are people calling someone who can't read the language a translator? Who isn't a translator then?

Bon appétit, shit-eating scum. Enjoy your coprophagia all you want, but everyone around is indeed entitled to complain about the stink.
