I also agree on this, what made Touhou appealing to me was that it's in my eye a comfy and somewhat relaxed game with simply designed yet unique characters.
The story was also really simple and was not trying to do something extreme or crazy, but something simple.

But this new games really goes the opposite way that made the Touhou series so appealing to me, what I understand so far the new game got a pretty complex and serious story(I know it's not THAT complex, but compared to the other games) but we have to see more about that when we get stuff translated.
Many of the characters are just overly designed and stand out way to much from the rest of the cast, I mean for real a American fairy clown and a emo goth chick(the only thing that's missing for her is that her theme should be "CRAWLIN' IN MY SKIN"), they just stand out so much and it does not feel like they fit in Touhou.

I would actually be fine with just Clownpiece being added to the game, but with the new emo chick it's just feels like it's over the top.

Sagume's ability is cool in itself, but also it ties to Seija. Hecatia is basically a Greek Shinki. The whole East/West thing is what EoSD was about. There's references to basically every single game from 1 through 14, which is fitting for a "hooray 20 years of Touhou" game.
