I started learning cello and piano when I was 4 and the other ones in elementary school so I've been learning for a long time, I have the capacity to learn new things pretty fast, I play instruments several hours every day, I usually have the motivation to intentionally practice things even when it feels uncomfortable rather than just playing for fun and doing the things that I'm already capable of doing, I've had good instructors (i.e. people who have been able to teach me how my muscles work, how my mind works, how my instrument works, and how can I utilize those things to improve at my own style), I've had a lot of opportunities to perform in front of live audiences, and in the end I'm not really all that amazing at any of the instruments I play, but I'm pretty good.

You won't get far without a teacher. I've been made painfully aware of this fact after trying to teach myself for a while, only to notice that you ingrain faulty movements and inefficient ways of playing that are very hard to remove once you notice how the strain starts becoming more apparent.

>> No.13797457

>acquire a piano
>hit a key to make the hammer hit the strings
>hold the key down for a while to let the strings vibrate
>release the key when you want the strings to stop vibrating
>if you want to release the key and still have the strings vibrating, use the sustain foot pedal

An additional step which you can skip if you want:

>learn what a scale is, how they work and then learn as many different scales as you want

After that, you just need to get more familiar with the instrument by playing around with it and improve your technique.

I grew up in a musical family, but never really took much of an interest in playing an instrument myself...I did play the cello for a few years in school, but I was never good at it because I never brought my cello home to practice because I didn't want to get made fun of for carrying a cello around.

Since I grew up around it and know basic music theory and stuff, I can pick up various instruments and play short little melodies that sound like real songs, but I can't really play play anything.

That is the basics. I guess I could have also mentioned that there is a delay of around 80 ms between hitting the key and hearing the attack of the sound, but you learn to adjust to that even if you aren't aware of it.

Passion is pretty foreign to /jp/. There's a large commitment to not half-assing things, but the alternative most people choose is do-nothing rather than go-all-out.

There are motivated people here and there but they're pretty rare and I feel like a lot of them leave.
