The only job you can get there is as an ALT or an English Teacher.

None of those have to work absurd hours and you can charge like 20-40$ an hour for teaching private English lessons.

Teaching English in Japan is literally free money and you don't even need a teaching degree to do it, just a four year degree.

If I had one, I'd move there already years go, but in my country you only get three-year degrees kappa

I could easily do my job anywhere on the planet with an internet connection, but strangely a lot of countries (including Japan) only issue work visas if your employer does business in your host country.

This seems counterintuitive to me, since if I lived in Japan and a Japanese business paid my salary, money isn't coming into the Japanese economy, it's just circulating. However if my native country is paying my salary, then all the money and taxes I spend in Japan are NEW wealth being transferred into Japan from my native country.

So it seems like most nations would be happy to issue visas to international telecommuters, but this isn't the case for some reason.

Not even close. Japan is literally the best country in the world for introverted white foreigners (like us, /jp/ goers). The only downside of living in Japan as a white foreigner is that people will always treat you like a fresh off the boat foreigner / weirdo / outsider.

This is absolutely no problem for us, since we get the same treatment in our home countries all the time, even if they're 99% white.

>> No.13775573

>>13775563
I mean, the biggest downside is that it costs a fuckton and most people don't speak the language as well as they speak English. I'd say that's pretty important. Not to mention it'd be harder to come up with that money because it's harder to get hired.

>> No.13775592

>>13775573
It's only a little bit hard to get hired at the beginning. If you have even a little experience living in Japan, you will pretty much never be out of a job in there (as an English teacher) because Japan is forced to learn English too yet they are the worst country on Earth in English language skills no matter how many quality teachers they get and how hard they try. It's kind of pathetic really. The only Japs who are able to speak English fluently (still with a Jap accent though) are those that lived in America or other English speaking countries. You can also sell your soul to some big name English teaching company and they can help you find a place to stay if they have you teach in some backwards shithole town where they have never even seen a foreigner in their lives.

Once you settle down there it will be just as boring and you will be just as lonely. A Japanese girl isn't going to fall automagically into your lap once you arrive there either since you will have a shit job and will live in a shit apartment that takes all your salary with random fees.

What will your future there look like? They will probably kick you out after 6 months.

>> No.13775640

>>13775592
Yeah, if you want to be an English teacher for a long time and work for minimal payoff. I'm sure you could save up and be alright but if you're going to work that hard you might as well do almost anything else. Like, if you put in that same effort in most other places you'd have more. The problem is you therefore have to deal with the fact that simply existing in Japan, even with struggle, must be better than saving more and perhaps going to Japan later anyway. That starts to become a challenging argument because what's hard is doing that for extended periods of time. What isn't hard is taking night shift jobs in your home country where you spend most of your time playing video games and posting on 4chan for around the same pay with a bigger place to stay. Learn some computer skills on top of that and you can do pretty well for yourself.

I get what you're saying. If you want it THAT badly, it's doable, but very few people actually want it that badly for that long. I guess we could throw in the whole interacting with people all day in another language as a job thing too but not everyone has problems with that and some would enjoy it.

It's probably a good idea for a brief life experience. Maybe not a great career.

There are two good ways to go live in Japan permanently:

1. You're rich. You can easily buy a million dollar loft in the heart of Tokyo. Easy to find a girl that will let you put your sausage in her sandwich and get married so you can stay there forever.

2. You get some rich Japanese CEO's or ambassador's daughter pregnant. She will want to raise her kid in Japan. Become a stay at home dad or find some job at a foreign company.

I went to Japan when I was 18 for college. I had only studied about a year's worth of college Japanese, so I went to a department with classes in English. 6 years later I've graduated and I'm working as a programmer. College was really fun. Classes in English were shit for the most part, but you can take Japanese langauge classes and when you get good enough, actual classes taught in Japanese.

When I came to Japan I was also a kissless virgin but I managed to do lewd things with cute Japanese girls. Imagine using your hard-earned Japanese dating knowledge from VNs and anime for real when you confess to a girl at the aquarium.

In Japan you can fulfill all your /jp/ desires. Akihabara. Comiket. Onaho direct from Amazon or direct to your local Lawson. Shitposting on 2channel. Meeting fellow otaku with high power levels who actually know what you're talking about.

Working sucks. I hate work culture in Japan. Even relatively chill companies are still awful. Young startups are basically your only option. Many big foreign companies in Japan have Japanese-style workplaces with crazy overtime. Teaching English is probably even more awful.

I would highly recommend college here though. It won't teach you anything besides the language but it's a great opportunity to interact with young people on the same level. Plus it's way cheaper than American college.

The most telling part that it's bait is right at the start where it implied that the poster got some computer engineering degree and is now able to work as a programmer in Japan. Even if the poster by some miracle managed to get the degree, there's no way he, as a foreigner, with no unique skills or experience, would be able to get a job over his Japanese equivalents.

The fact that he also implies his knowledge from dating sims helped him lose his virginity is also telling of bait, and something that even the average 4channer should be able to pick up on.

This is just so wrong. As a (native) English-speaker you have a huge advantage programming. You can read the original docs. You can read the massive amount of English reference material that has not been translated to Japanese. Japanese education is also really bad. They were teaching us PHP 4.0 in one of my classes.

Japanese companies are always behind the curb technologically. Just learn any current "hot" technology like Go or React.js and I guarantee you can find a job somewhere. The catch is that you need to be able to speak good enough Japanese.

As a graduate of a Japanese college you will be apply to fully participate in the 就職活動 system if you want. It is piss-easy to get hired as a "bilingual" (I use that term lightly, business Japanese at best) foreigner.

You will not get a good salary though. As a new graduate, I was offered 250万, turned it down, then accepted 500万 elsewhere. Peanuts compared to America.

I have no idea where this myth about Japanese not wanting to hire foreigners came from. They LOVE foreigners, but only if you speak Japanese.

It's not that simple. You're competing against every weeaboo with a degree. The vast majority of jobs online aren't willing to sponsor a visa and the ones that do are shady as fuck. Even if you get accepted into JET there's a good chance you'll be placed in a rural town.

Teaching English in Japan is practically dead. It used to be a good gig but now the pay sucks with almost no benefits.

Software engineer. Can communicate fine with my colleagues (and talk with them quite frequently), and my reading is good enough to play most games without any bother.

I can imagine that living in Japan without knowing Japanese that well would be really bad, though. My company seems to be desperately trying to get people to come from the Singapore branch to Japan, so wonder how that will work out for them.

Exchange student here, stayed for one full year. Japan is a lonely country, outside of the large cities it's mostly family and cliques that keep outsiders, especially foreigners, out of any social activities and opportunities. The cities are just like any other country, they are so large and vast that you feel like a fish lost in the sea. Japan's best features are it's conservative population ( although sadly that is changing under US pressure ) and freedom of expression. Don't go for the wrong reasons and definitely don't go if you do not have any contacts in the area you will be living in. Make sure you have at least one contact ( i.e. as simple as a teacher or a pen-pal ) that can introduce you to other people to form a social network. Otherwise you will end up completely socially isolated in a very densely populated area. Also to ruin some dreams people have here, Japanese women aren't like in the movies and anime.
