Canvas 2's translation wasn't very good. It wasn't eye bleedingly awful or anything but it was pretty uninspired. Same with Yoake. The original Japanese script wasn't very good but Edger's is so much more boring. And a boring translation is the worst kind.

Boring translations may not actually be the "worst kind," but Edger really isn't that great of a writer. Just because something isn't completely inaccurate and unreadable doesn't mean the translator gets a free pass, I really dislike this, "but I understood the obvious stuff that happened, what exactly is the problem here?" attitude. Being able to write and accurately replicate the original work are both important, don't act like you can just write the first thing that comes to mind when you read something as your "translation" just because it pretty much says what the original says

>> No.13679079

>>13679049
Does a translator absolutely need to be a good writer? Because if we narrow it down to that, I think we're only left with koestl and no other translators. Obviously my Japanese is shit so I'm going to lap up translations that are fairly mediocre anyway it it's something I couldn't play the original of anyway, but good writing is important for sure, let's not vehemently defend mediocrity every time someone jokingly makes some snarky implication

>The Japanese side also extremely overrates the popularity of just about everything on there.
Huh? Pretty much everything on that list had a considerable influence in the eroge industry. I'd list their influence but hell, the chart does that job already. The only two titles I'd swap would be Kanon for One (which came before it and is more of a pioneer) and... you know, Subahibi shouldn't really be in that chart. It's popular but there are a huge amount of plot based games that came before it. Put MLA or Muramasa instead. Subahibi doesn't take itself seriously very often. Also not including YU-NO is a very questionable decision. At any rate, comparing japanese and western eroge is not a very good idea. Eroge had a lot of space to develop from the shitty PC-88 porn games, while the western adventure games, from what I can tell, went to the "point-and-click" path, with sierra, lucasarts and the like leading the industry. Later on, the genre had a decay for some reason, while eroge diversified itself and maintained its market. If you try playing some PC-88 games you'll quickly notice they have few differences from 80s text adventure games in the west, a considerable amount not even having any sort of sexual content.

I think the reason they haven't updated the fundraiser is because they're waiting for eventual refunds or just want to surprise us with how much the fundraiser has increased ever since its last update.
Anyway, they announced this project last year so they should know it comes as no surprise their annoucement of the localization of Supipara first chapter given that at this point they clearly have more than 100k on the fundraiser.

And we have seven translators, all working on different parts of the game, none of whom have ever translated before, all picked up from Fuwanovel. But it's okay because we're having them check each other's work."
