Hello /jp/ I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but do you know if there are any offcial statistics about the size and revenue of the Japanese doujinshi market or websites/papers (preferrably in English because my moon is miserable) that research this phenomenon? Do Western movie/novel/etc. fandoms have a market for fanfiction/fancomics with a size similar to the Japanese doujinshi market? If not, is it because the countries view copyright law enforcement differently that the doujinshi market is so widely accepted while similar markets don't really exist in the West?

Most barely pay the expenses, some flop, a little make huge success.

Porn does relatively good, some are doujinshi just in name at this point since they make good bucks, but they're still a few compared to the ocean of porn we have.

I was looking at dlsite's download counter the other day and plenty of people seem to be making mad dosh with the shittiest of games as long as it's porn.

I don't know anything about English-language sites, and from my experience so far they're probably all shit anyway.

A recently famous number for doujinshi market size is 70 billion yen of revenue. That'd be about the same as the entire NA comic industry. You can now guess why similar markets don't exist in the West.

Thank you for the replies so far!

It doesn't necessarily have to be a market for comic series, it could also be for movies, tv series or books, which are more popular in the West than comics. I'm guessing stuff like Harry Potter has lots of fanfiction, but they're mostly posted for free on websites and aren't openly sold the way doujinshi are sold (at least that is my personal impression).

Its probably also to do with copyright laws and shit over here being so much more stringent and enforced. If they keep it free they can just call it fair use/parody. Even free mods or games get DMCA'd to oblivion so charging for that sort of thing would only make them stomp even harder.

Comiket sometimes publishes some surveys of their participants. You would have to look up to find them in a translated version though. But the rough summary would be that 60-70% of the circles loose money and around only 5% make mad money. The remaining 25-35% either break even or make a small profit. Numbers are very rough, since the one survey I saw had it by circles and profits can be quite different between a single person circle and a multi person one. Also depending how far the partcipant travels from expenses can differ by a lot. There were also number for females and males I don't remember much.
Profits can go into the tousands of dollars for wall circles.
In recent years more and more professional and well known artists also release doujin manga, for various reasons. But in general the doujin culture is more in publishing something than in making a profit.

Yes quite a few people are starved for erotica with their waifu(slang for bitch I saw on TV).
Just take a look at the /v/ porn flavour of the months to see how low peoples standards are.
