/lit/ here. I'm curious about something. How big is reading in modern Japan? I'm not talking about manga, I mean reading actual books, classics like Homer's epics or Plato's dialogues.

Whats the common literature curriculum for a Japanese student?

People think novels and visual novels are comparable to books.
Also you better ask /int/.

/jp/ is not the japanese board, please go.

>classics like Homer's epics or Plato's dialogues
Those are Western classics. Japan invented the novel.

>actual books, classics like Homer's epics or Plato's dialogues
> if Japan doesn't start with the Greeks, where do they begin? (from your other thread)
Just out of curiosity, is anything at all worth reading in your mind outside of Philosophy and Classical History? Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to argue against >>13104465 and say 'VNs and novels are on the same intellectual level!' because that would be stupid, but I'm genuinely curious, if it's actually the case that in /lit/'s mind, anything that isn't Philosophy or fiction that's highly regarded as being a 'classic' is basically not worth even thinking about or giving a chance.

/lit/ is entirely left leaning high schoolers and first year college students who probably all visit reddit. Don't give them attention. Delete this thread

Over at /lit/, we have an in-joke response to anyone that asks where they should start with reading. We get a lot of newcomers every so often, most of them being recently new high school graduates who haven't read a book in their life. Anyway, the response is "start with the Greeks" since the Greeks are held as the starting point for most of western thought.

Philosophy and classical history are held pretty highly at /lit/ but that doesn't mean there the only thing one should read -- that is just silly.

Thanks for the cultural insight, /lit/ friend.

While you're here, could you tell me the difference between irony, post-irony, and new sincerity?

There's three kinds of irony: verbal, dramatic, and situational. Verbal irony is when a speaker says a statement whose meaning is different from the one ostensibly expressed. Dramatic irony is when the viewer knows something that a character does not. Situational irony is when an outcome is different than what is expected. Those are all pretty simple definitions, and they tend to go beyond just the way I described them. Also, irony is typically used for humorous effect.

Post-irony is a bullshit term. I'm most likely wrong, but I think it means that something that was once liked jokingly is now respected as something that is liked because its good.

New Sincerity is a literary movement (i think) which is basically a response to post-modernism. It seems to hate post-modernism and wants to go back to the roots of modern and traditional art.

>>13104548
Uh, nevermind with what I said about post-irony. I don't think thats the definition at all. I forgot the term I described. It seems that whoever invented the term confused irony with post-modernism?

Are you one of those guys who reads for effect?

>> No.13104580

>>13104556
I've never even heard 'post-irony' and 'new sincerity' before, but just by glancing at the wiki for 5 seconds, don't you think that rather than them confusing irony with post-modernism it's called post-irony specifically because 'post-modernism' typically uses irony heavily?

It's me >>13104481 again. How did I know /lit/ would probably actually be pretty stupid? It's almost like people who intentionally communicate in the most pretentious way possible are almost always not what they present themselves to be or something...

They do have their own classics.
If anniemay has teached me anything their cultural subjects like history and literature are very closed minded culturally.
Not that's entirely a bad thing but.

I bet a lot of things are translated into Japanese, even the classics.

I remember some old novel having a Japanese name, Count of Monte Cristo? Can't remember the Japanese name but it was also the title of an anime. Probably a lot more like that, huh?

Its funny now that I think about it, here in eastern Europe we have very little of our own literature, so we leach everything from Europe or America, but why not anything from Asia or Russia? I'm sure they have tons of good books too, this has to be some kind of cultural racism or something, not that it necessarily is a bad thing.
